Hidden Gluten

has anyone else heard that envelopes (the glue part you have to lick) have Gluten???

I remember hearing this a few years ago and have stopped licking the envelope in fear of getting gluten.

At work (Im a 4th grade teacher), my students questioned me as to why I didnt lick the envelope!! I didnt bother explaining the gluten fear.....although my students are quite aware of my celiac disease and try to offer me foods that they think are "safe" for me. Theyre such good, lovable kids.

So does anyone have info regarding this matter?

thanks! :D

I don't have any new info other than what you've already heard. I guess some envelope companies use wheat starch in their glue, some use corn starch, some use something else entirely, and since it's hard to tell who manufactured your envelopes I just avoid licking them too. I use tape or a sponge or a wet napkin if I have to!

I have also heard that some envelopes contain gluten and I now avoid licking them.

I use a glue stick or a sponge but I will not lick it. Not only from a gluten perspective but how am I supposed to know where the envelope has been? I am a germ freak and that just seems like it would be filled with them.

Thanks Scott. They are gluten-free but cross contaminated.

Hi there @MCAyr I have a small umbilical hernia which came about during my second pregnancy.   I can just about see it, and feel it, when I stand or sit, but it is far less noticeable when I lie down.  I always know when I am putting on weight because I can get pain and burning near the site, funnily enough not on the hernia itself but either side!  I would imagine bloating could cause the same effect as weight gain. In my case I don't think it is my bowel protruding but a bit of fat  - sorry,  I realise this isn't painting a very pretty picture.  But in truth it is scarcely noticeable.  It has never really got bigger in size. I was rather hoping that it could be operated on but here in the UK they don't seem to operate on every hernia anymore.  My GP isn't remotely worried about it. In a way, I should be thankful - it is like an early warning system that I need to go on a diet! Cristiana

The hernia description would likely be unrelated to celiac disease, but you'd need to get it checked out by your doctor to be sure it's a hernia.
