Hair Loss

I've had lots of hair loss the past few years. I never looked at my labels for hair products until last night, they all had some kind of wheat protein etc in them. So now that I have changed to gluten free shampoos, do you think the hair loss will lessen?

I'd think the change in your diet and your ablilty to absorb nutrients would have a bigger effect. I've had a hair loss problem the last few years and I just started gluten-free in June. It'll be interesting to see what improves with the diet. I did check my shampoos/conditioners/soaps though, every little bit helps!

Double check my answer, but I think alopecia is associated with celiac disease. Could you have that?

Hi BamBam

I was diagnosed about 2 years ago with Celiac, and I still notice that I lose a lot of hair in the shower--more than normal. I have picked up on something though---when my bowels are acting up due to gluten/other food sensitivities, I tend to lose more hair. Have you noticed this?

Also, I am sensitive to tanning lotions that have wheat protein in them. I get an itchy rash all over my arms. I switched lotion, and it went away. So, it may be a good idea to check in your lotions/shampoos for gluten containing ingredients.

When exposed to even a small amount of gluten, I lose hair by the clumps. Being gluten free (even hair and lotion products) helps and my hair is finally beginning to look pretty good.

As far as I know and I have made severalonline searches, celiac disease disease has not been recognized as a cause of migraines or any eye problems. What I wrote must have been confusing.

Interesting, when I suffered for a few months with ectopics I noticed that carbohydrates would cause indigestion and bloating in my stomach, then that would lead to my heart skipping beats, and I could feel it in my throat, it was very unsettling.  My last serious bout of this was after eating a Muller Rice Pudding for breakfast.   I happened to be wearing a 48 hour halter at the time and cardiology picked it up, but they weren't worried about what they saw. There was some British doctor who'd made some videos on the Vagus nerve that I remember watching at the time which made sense of what I was experiencing, there did seem to be some sort of connection.

I asked my cardiologist about stopping vitamins.  He said his tests account for all detectable vitamins from sources other than food.  I only need to stop them for a couple of days.  He has me keep records of meds and vitamins I've ingested over the past 10 days and prior and he does his calculations.

Reply to treats I try and eat to bring up the glucose. Sometime I get up 3 times a night and eat something. I don't think food is the issue. A lot of the food they say should help doesn't.  Many mornings my level is 59 and I feel sick, sometimes for hours. It has been recommended I go to an Endocrinologist.
