We Had A Luncheon At Work Today...

We had a potluck luncheon at the school where I teach today. Two of my coworkers made me gluten-free items. One made a ranch potato salad and brought in the labels so I could be sure it was safe. Another coworker made peanut butter fudge that was gluten-free and gave me the ingredients beforehand so I could double check that it was safe! I made some gluten-free Sausage and peppers. So combined with the fruit, veggies, and salad, I had a great lunch with fudge for dessert! Really made me feel good after how down I was feeling from the bridal shower!

I only had one kind of shock: a coworker I consider a friend and eat lunch with every day told me she didn't have time to check the labels for her taco dip. She told me what was in it, but I didn't risk it. I was surprised because I asked her earlier in the week if she would read the label on the beans to check for me, but she couldn't be bothered.

That's okay...I had plenty to eat!!!

Sounds like a great experience! What nurturing and compassionate people!

As for the "friend", I've noticed that when we go through life's trials, often the people we would expect to step up in a supportive way, surprisingly, do not! However, the people we may not have felt a connection with, do step up.

Some people are friends for fun times and chit-chat, while mere acquaintances really empathize with us and act out in a generous way. Being friendly and being generous are two different concepts and most people tend to be better at one over the other!

Our boss had pizza delivered for his birthday today to share with all...the secretary suggested I eat the toppings and just leave the crust..."surely that will be fine" is what she said. Heavy sigh!

Going in Friday for my 6 month follow-up (diagnosed on my birthday last year)...hopefully all this dieting will pay off when the GI doc runs his tests.

What an uplifting success story (except for the last bit). There truly are some lovely people out there. I'm so glad for you! This will help for future potlucks at your school, too. I like how people truly took it seriously.

Your luncheon sounds wonderful. The people I work with don't really understand it except for a friend I worked with at my last place of employment. It is kind of awkward when they have parties, some people look at you funny because your not eating any of the food and you eat your own pakced lunch. I guess I will get used to it, I was diagnosed in August and it is getting easier.

congrats!

I went to my first potluck today where I brought my own food... pumpkin soup with leeks, ginger, and garlic, MMM. A few people asked about it but everyone was really understanding when I talked about my need to be gluten-free, and there were several folks who knew what celiac is.

There were a few things I prolly could have eaten there (mix nuts and dried fruits), but I brought enough to fill me up.

so I'm beginning to understand how awesome it is to not have to worry about potluck food anymore :)

@trents I am really not sure lol. I had a doctor who quit with no notice from 2 different practices and I was her patient both times, I just remember her telling me to take it. I guess for the dysphasia or Barrettes Esophagus? I have been taking it for years

@Charlie1946, what are you taking omeprazole for and how long have you been on it?

Forgive me if this has already been discussed. I couldn’t find another discussion about it. I was diagnosed with osteoporosis a couple of years ago after having been asymptomatic for celiac for decades. I ignored the celiac diagnosis because I had no issues, but I was ignorant to the long term damage. I am still asymptomatic, but after years of eating gluten I am now strictly gluten free. The osteoporosis has been improving after taking Fosamax the last couple of years. My question is…..has my body returned to normal bone production on its own now that it is not influenced by gluten? A new problem has surfaced. I have to stop taking Fosamax due to a vascular issue which requires me to take a daily aspirin. The aspirin mixed with Fosamax will increase the chance of internal bleeding and ulcers so I need to turn to Reclast, which I’m trying to avoid. I’m turning to you all to see if anyone knows if there is a chance that my body is back to normal bone production since it is not exposed to gluten. I’m going to ask my doctor if I can stop the Fosamax and take the aspirin until my bone scan next year. Any help is greatly appreciated!

I was replying to Charlie1946's most recent post where she asked the question if Omeprazole was the right thing to take.
