Red Skin And Fatigue?

MrMatchStick

MrMatchStick Newbie

The other day I had red skin splotches all over my body. Specifically in area's that were once scarred or damaged in some way. Like my tattoo I have turned all red.

I was very fatigued. Next morning I woke up and feel out of bed and couldn't even get back into bed.

Not sure if this is celiac though. I was giagnosed 10 months ago and I am very carefull about my diet though I do slip from time to time. When I do slip I typically get slightly fatigued, tremors in my hands and feat and tingling fingers. Lateley, seems to be getting worse though because I had a beer and had an ear rash for a week which was unusual because it was always on my butocks that the rashes developed.

Anyhow, I don't think I ate any gluten that day and if I did it couldn't of been that much because there was nothing accept maybe a taco which should of been gluten free according to their web site. Was this Celiac....seems that it could be Aenemia...havn't had a chance to re-up my vitamin supply lately. :(

It sucked. I was in bed the whole day. Could barely move.

If the taco was eaten at a restaurant there is always a possibility of CC (cross contamination )

For me it does not take much gluten for me to react

Used to take allot for me but it's been getting worse. I used to be able to cheat here and there...typically a guiness. But I can't cheat in the least bit these days.

However I never turned all red like that and that was the worst fatigue I have ever felt from the the celiac. I got out of bed and fell right to the ground. It was ridiculious. I swear I couldn't of been that much cross contaminated I don't think.

Could it be iron deficiency and aenemia? The red blotches seem to add up and my primary source of iron is my vitamins which I have not taken in a week. Besides the vitamins my primary source is rice, chicken and potato...lots of chicken and potato. Found out recently bananas is good too.

the last time I got CC ( a very small amount) I ended up in the ER with CT scans (head and abdomen) and all kinds of testing,,

as to the anemia ,have you had your vitamins, minerals and iron checked lately ??

That kind of fatigue and weakness and falling down is consistent with the neurological symptoms of Celiac. It can get worse..if you keep getting contaminated -whether it is from cheating or cross contamination..it can definitely get worse, mine did. They diagnosed it as "fibromyalgia" but it was Celiac muscle weakness, dizziness, and fatigue. The fatigue kept getting worse until all I could do is sit and stare...like the depression commercials. But it all went away once I got 100% gluten free. It all comes back with the slightest gluten cross contamination, but the length of the reaction can vary from days to a week. In fact, you may find your reactions continue to get worse than what you have already experienced. There have been a lot of posts about that here. You probably ought to get rid of all sources of cross contamination you can find, and no more guiness. In my opinion.

You need to call your doctor today. It would have been a good idea to have gotten to the ER when that happened. Not everything is celiac. While that could have been a gluten reaction it also could have been something else, like a TIA or a stroke. Do mention this to your doctor and quit cheating on the diet.

Yea, was going to go to the hospital but was so tired I just fell asleep. When I woke up later that night was starting to feel better and the red splotches all over me were gone so I decided against it (fatigue and red skin lasted about 24 hrs) considering they probably would of chalked it up as Celiac and sent me on my way and in the end just being a waste of my time.

You may still want to mention this to your doctor. You may have a true allergy to wheat in addition to the celiac especially if the blotches were itchy. If they didn't itch then perhaps it was simply inflammation. Glad to hear you are feeling better.

These blotches were different than the celiac rashes. The celiac which was always on my buttocks spread now appearing on my ears also. They are much differnt. Like scabbish I guess is the word I would use and itchy. This was like someone painted me and specifically places where I was onced scarred. Had my appendix removed when I was kid and that scarr turned all red, my chest, my knees, kneck and face all turned a bright red.

The celiac rashes stay a long time these rashes started at night but went away in the morning but the fatigue was still there....unbelievably so.

The celiac has definetly become worse over the last few months. I used to be able to cheat and have some noodles, beer or god forbid, a real slice of pizza ( I live in Buffalo.) Now the slightest contamination bites me and bites me hard. Fatigue, rashes, and the worst is the my hands shaking because I can't hide that...nor the fatigue really.

It was weird. Not typical of celiac.

It sounds like your body is trying really hard to get you to stop cheating. When we get gluten after we go gluten free the body often reacts more strongly. While I have never had the blotches the fatigue I get from a glutening lasts for about 2 to 3 weeks and my neuro symptoms flare up for a while. For me that means a return of balance issues now but before diagnosis my hands trembled so much that some doctors were convinced I was an alcoholic. When the antibodies flare it causes an inflammatory response. That response can present differently for each of us. My arthritis flares and my tattoos will raise up, perhaps in you that response caused the red blotches. I can't say for sure but I can say that your body is making it clear it doesn't want you to continue to cheat on occasion. While that is a bit of a drag it is your bodies attempt to protect you. I hope the fatigue lets up a bit soon. Some of us find that sublingual B12 can help with that.

isnt' Rosacea a red blotchy skin condition? I don't know much about it but another poster said she had it from bacterial overgrowth... maybe check out that lead to see? just guessing here based on your recent diagnosis....

Rosacea is red and blotchy but wouldn't come one day and be gone the next from what I understand about it.

Where can I find a gastro in adelaide who can diagnose refractory celiac disease have seen 3 so far and don't understand the most obvious question, why my celiac symptoms did not resolve on a gluten free diet the symptoms just got worse as it is attacking my nervous system.

I recently traveled to Spain and Portugal. I was with a tour group, they knew I needed to be gluten-free and made sure the kitchens preparing the group meals were aware. But just in case, I took Gliadin-X with me and took it for every evening meal - and most other meals. The one time I got glutened was from lunch early in the trip - had to be from cross-contamination. I had not taken Gliadin-X before that meal, which made for a pretty miserable day. Learned my lesson... 😞

Hi trents, thanks for the response.  The 2nd opinion doctor said that if my CRP is still elevated at that time, he would advise me to look at Crohns/UC or another autoimmune issue. The colonoscopy I had this year seemed to rule those 2 out for now so he still believed celiac may explain it. No previous doctors have suggested any explanation for it even after calling to tell me it was a concerning result.  I guess it feels tough knowing I have positive blood testing, permissive genetics, and visible duodenum changes... and somehow it's NCGS instead of celiac. I'm still surprised the biopsies came back negative when the doctor was so sure they would be positive.

"He also said that my CRP should return to a normal level at this time if the culprit was inflammation in the small intestine due to celiac." But with if the elevated CRP levels are caused by some other inflammatory process going on in your body? "She also said that my positive EMA isn't valuable because it has "a high false positive rate." Totally wrong! This is a highly accurate test for celiac disease, that requires specialized expertise to perform and interpret, and it is more expensive than other blood tests. It is generally used as a last test to confirm celiac disease after a positive tTG-IgA test. The sensitivity of a test refers to its ability to correctly identify individuals with the condition. For the EMA-IgA blood test, the sensitivity is generally very high, ranging from 90% to 98%. This means that the test can accurately detect celiac disease in a significant percentage of people who have the condition. The specificity of a test refers to its ability to correctly identify individuals without the condition. For the EMA-IgA blood test, the specificity is also high, typically around 95% to 100%. This indicates that the test can effectively rule out celiac disease in individuals who do not have the condition. Taken from the following article: Looking at the whole picture, I am wondering if you are transitioning from NCGS to celiac disease. Some experts in the gluten disorder field believe NCGS can be a precursor to celiac disease.

Hi all, just wanted to post an update.  I have been gluten free for about 1.5 months now and seeing improvement already in the bathroom.  Recently I had a visit with another GI doctor for a 2nd opinion. He said that while my blood tests and scope are not a "slam dunk" for celiac, he believes it's more likely than not that I have it. His advice was to stay with a celiac-level gluten free diet (no CC) for 6-12 months then retest to make sure TTG-IGA is still negative. He also said that my CRP should return to a normal level at this time if the culprit was inflammation in the small intestine due to celiac.  Today I had a follow up with the original GI that performed the scope. She is confident it is NCGS and says I can still have gluten sometimes. When I asked about the visible duodenum damage, she said it is just "irritation" from gluten because the biopsies were negative. She also said that my positive EMA isn't valuable because it has "a high false positive rate."  I guess I'm having trouble reconciling the totally different advice from these 2 GI's. I want to believe the new doctor more at this point because what he said just makes more sense to me, and he gave an actionable timeline for possible next steps. Feeling lost and disappointed at this point and wanted to write it down here in case anyone has input. Thank you.
