hello im 24 been dealing w/ major problems since 20. now that its been explained to me i've been dealing w/ it for my whole life. i always had bowel problems, mainly constipated when i was a little kid. and i always until a week ago ate bread i love it. neway i havent gotten tested but i've been on fruits and veggies and water diet also w// wholewheat bread n peanut butter until a week ago. cut the bread and pb out of the diet and i have started to feel a lil better. plan on testing but its expensive so i'll have to wait to b sure, but if gluten free is pain free it'll b worth it. i really have two main questions.....1. how does marijuana effect this disease? i ask because it has been the only thing in the past that has ever alleviated ne of my pain or symptoms. not to mention it helps w/ my stress disorders. however if it is secretly slowing my healing process down i want to try n stay off it... i have quit for a week to expirement how if feels, i have more pain. please share opinions......2. I have noticed ppl's reactions to me as if i smell really bad. i myself dont smell it and i shower 2-3 times, and brush teeth 2-3 times daily... like i said i've quit marijuana for the last week and the detoxing of that i believe has made it even worse.. i've asked family and friends, and they tell me that im imagining it, but i think they're just being polite.. has ne1 else had a smell problem w/ this? the 1 thing that i can think of is that i've kinda been on bed rest for over 3yrs i mean i could've walked a lil and stuff but the symptoms combined w/ another physical problem of mine wouldnt allow me to get ne decent excercise in. Im thinking since i've been able to do slow jogs and i ride the stationery bike a lil bit lately and cut the gluten and mj out of my body that its just gettin rid of all the nasty discusting toxins that i've taken in and clogged myself w/ the lats 3 to 4 yrs??? ne help and i mean ANY would b much appreciated. My social life has been slowly dwindling away ever since age 20, i cant hold a job, and life is just getting pathetic.

Hi Tguy,

Smoking marijuana should not impede your recovery. It's from a different plant family (hemp vs. grains).

And there are still some grains that you can eat, like all the rices and buckwheat. Some of use can eat Gluten Free Oats and some can have quinoa.

If your family and friends are telling you that you don't smell, I'd trust them. And there's gluten in most of the soaps and shampoos, etc.

I hope things get better for you. It takes a while to feel better. You didn't ask for advise, but ... try to eat like your ancestors did by eating whole foods and nothing processed or dining out (at least at first).

Good luck,

m

I would get a full body blood panel and it would indicate where you need to show your interest.

thank u for that marijuana answer i've been really stressed out since i've quit. And i would believe my fam and friends about the stinking, and i want to.... but there is no mistaking some ppls reactions they r pretty clear. the other day was the first time i did cardio on the bike at the gym in my complex.. when i was done as i expected i was drenched in sweat, i mean i know when u sweat a lot u stink at least a little but someone was walking by like 4 or 5 ft away from the gym door at the same time i walked out they noticably almost threw up kept their face covered and started walking very quickly. It was sooo embarrassing! i could hardly believe it, and the fact that fam and friends r all saying i dont really makes me wonder like how bad it really is and for reference no thats not the only incident there's been many of those situations. i have pelvis floor dysfunction as well it could maybe have somethin to do w/ it, bt i dont know. Im doing everything in my power to better myself, i have considered a shrink but the idea of giving someone money to listen to ur problems sounds pointless to me and i dont have ne extra doh to really throw around like that, i have gastro appt. tomoro he is very good maybe he'll have an answer.... ps i never disregard advice feel free.

i think thats what i will have to do, i just am kinda poor unfortunately, no insurance and it gets steep, dont get me wrong i'd giv up all my money for a legit way to fix this.. its just i've wasted so much money over the last three yrs w/ no benefit they always say im healthy which infuriates me, i mean each time i see my fam doc i've fluctuated like 10 to 20 lbs when i was healthy i wasbetween 225- 240 im 6'3''... last time i weighd i was 180! and i know for sure i've had to of lost another 15 at least, i had two ppl sitting in the same room as me last night that i hadnt seen for a few mos. and they literally did not recognize me for a good 30 min to a hr, they all think im on heroine or somethin it sucks! but sorry lol ur not a shrink i'll save for the test.

If you get a medical MJ card you would, as far as I know, be able to grow a couple of plants for your own use. While it can help with symptoms you may find after you have been gluten free for a while you don't have the symptoms you need it for.

You can't be tested for celiac if you are gluten free, but you don't need a doctors permission to be gluten free.

Check into clinics in your area and see if you qualify for a sliding fee scale. Check at your local hospital also. I lost insurance a while ago and skipped appoints with my psychiatrist but then found out they would do a sliding fee scale. It dropped my appointment costs down from about $145 to $4. I have PTSD so that was a great relief.

As far as the body odor goes you may also find that is relieved on the diet. Shower as often as you can and brush your teeth frequently. I don't know how common it is but one of my family members had awful problems with really foul breath when on a heavy gluten diet. I don't know if it was a body chemistry thing or what but know it was relieved.

Some people have an issue with body odor and it has absolutely nothing to do with hygiene. You're going to have to narrow down the actual source of the smell. I don't mean what's causing it, I mean where it is physically coming from. I don't know exactly what "awful" means in this case but, even a person's mouth, sweat, etc. can smell like actual feces. The following link is to a free ebook that may help you figure it out. It may also complicate the matter. Apparently several people have an issue with odor that others may or may not notice. It's one thing if it's really just you smelling it but, considering your story about the gym, it's fairly obvious you are not imagining it.

Open Original Shared Link

Web searches are going to leave you frustrated on the issue and will probably not provide much help if any at all. The reason being is there is a multitude of things that can cause a problem like this. However, going by the fact you were constipated as a child and have had bowel issues most of your life, I wouldn't be surprised if it is related to a fistula or something similar in your digestive tract. That's assuming the odor is actually coming from your rectal are though.

Sorry if any of that was TMI or too blunt but, I wanted to be as clear as possible. Hopefully your gastro appointment will help you out.

no worries i need the info, the problem is i dont really smell it. i had a very good friend tell me today that im trippin, i told him about the gym story too... it may b what i thought and only happen when im sweating a lot, because the fact im eliminating the gluten and the pot from my body at the same time.. i made him put it on my late mother n he sware up n down he couldnt smell nething... as far as the other times i think i notice ppl smell me i do kinda have anxiety nowadays and tend to sweat when im in public, i dont know y i never used to feel nervous.....I have many problems aside from celiac, like ocd type reactions. i've been through a s$#&load tho from mother n bf deaths to this celiac s$#& to being arrested for FINg pot..and it all hit right around the same time. ive always been embarrassed to go see a shrink but the way im feeling these days maybe i should.. i think if i can just get rid of this intestinal/abdominal pain i could focus on other things and things can start coming together for me.

mushroom Proficient

It does sound to me like you are trying to deal with too many things at once and are overwhelmed by it all, and maybe the pot is just complicating the issue??? Is there any way you can wean yourself from the pot, and then focus on one issue at a time? Also, I think the idea of someone you can talk this whole thing through with would be good.

I have only ever smelled one person who consistently smelled "bad" - as in BO kind of bad - and he was an attorney who seemed to be totally oblivious to his condition. I have to admit that it was a bit claustrophobic to go into his office and I did everything I could to avoid it, but I think this is something different we are talking about. This man wore suits which he could not have dry-cleaned every day and his clothing all stunk and I read back then (have not since re-educated myself) that there are some people whose body odor is uncontrollable no matter how much deodorant or antiperspirant they use and they are oblivious themselves.

I would opt, personally, for eliminating the source of the pain (probably gluten) than continuing gluten and trying to mask the pain. While I do not object to the use of opiates, I do think that if you can eliminate the need for them you are better off :) And they would stop messing with your head and allow you to think more clearly about the other things :D

It's odd that you don't smell it yourself as people tend to notice their own odor before anyone else. Stress can absolutely trigger the creation of odor and, it could be that only certain people are able to detect the scent that is given off. Again, this is an incredibly difficult issue to figure out.

That sounds like TMAU (Trimethylaminuria) which is a result of the body not being able to break down the trimethylamine in the foods those individuals eat. A diet low in choline can improve that. However, to my knowledge, anyone with TMAU is extremely aware of the odor as is everyone they come into contact with so I don't think that's what the lawyer had.

I would think that someone oblivious to the fact they have an odor is probably used to it and it is probably a result of their diet. I've read numerous times that when a person first smells something (fruit, soil, flowers, etc.), the odor is incredibly strong. The next time they smell it though, the scent is reduced by up to 35% or more. It's apparently a "defense mechanism" of sorts. The body can also send out odor as a "defense mechanism" similar to when wild animals mark their territory, are in heat, and so on. From what I understand, stress, fear, being territorial, and other such strong emotions can trigger a chemical reaction that will result in an odor being given off by the body which may or may not be detectable. It's just an incredibly murky subject.

yes it is a mirky subject, i was at the doc yesterday tho and he told me i didnt stink, the part talking about how only some ppl can detect it sounds pretty accurate as its usually never the whole group or room... its very strange hopefully it will stop as the gluten is eliminated? i dont knwo, if not then i guess im just gona have to deal w/ it lol i dont know how i'd do that but lif goes on right?

Sadly, that is something you will commonly see if do a web search on the issue of body odor that is unrelated to hygiene especially for people with TMAU. The people with TMAU sort of have it worse though because they know what the problem is and there is simply no way to currently fix it except hoping a diet low in choline will help. You however may be stuck in a situation where you will just have to "grin and bear it" if you can not figure out the root cause. It could be worse though. You could notice the odor yourself which would absolutely have to make the situation harder than it already is.

I truly hope your situation is related to either some recent trigger event, your diet, "detox", etc. and that it clears up. They body has a strange way of dealing with things at times. For all we know about it, we know a lot less. What I can tell you for sure though is the "cleaner" (cutting out added sugar, fillers, binders, chemicals, preservatives, processed foods, etc.) you eat, the more you will notice how certain foods affect your body physically, emotionally, and even scent wise. For instance, and this may be TMI lol, if I eat something that's been "fortified" with synthetic vitamins/minerals like cereal, my urine will smell identical to it. That's not surprising though since a majority of synthetic vitamins/minerals will go directly from your stomach to your urinary system. I have noticed that things like onions, garlic, similar foods, etc. now effect more than just my breath which also isn't to surprising considering those types of foods are considered "cleansing" combined with the fact your skin is your largest organ and, the first place your body tries to get rid of toxins via perspiration (sweat). There is a reason the saying "you are what you eat" exists.

Regarding the smell issue...

It is possible that you are getting rid of toxins... BUT...

If even your doctor said he didn't smell anything, I'm going to guess that you are oversensitive, picking up on behaviors that have nothing to do with you.

I struggle with anxiety, and I can't handle it on my own. I recently tried again, hoping that being gluten-free would have helped (it didn't, really). I noticed that when I was most anxious, I saw everyone else's actions as somehow relating to me. Now that I'm back on a small anxiety med, I can see where other people's actions are related to THEM, not me. Things I took as being directed at me, had nothing to do with me at all.

It sounds like you have some social anxiety. I hope that in your case, because you have no insurance and medication may be too expensive, going gluten-free will help with it. For many people it does. In the meantime, as someone else suggested, try to find a counseling center with sliding-scale fees. Most universities offer one, if you have a college in your area. Call up the psychology department & they can tell you.

i definately do, i guess i always have but ive been "out of the picture" i geuss u could say for the last few yrs, and it sounds crazy to say but i just dont know how to act in public lol.. ppl always ask me whats wrong when really at that momen somethin mite not even b bothering me. vise versa i dont get it, as to the university question i actually have thought about that i live right across the street from one but i also know a lot of ppl that go there and are actually majoring in that so i dont really wana do it there but i will look for somewhere that offers slide fees

:DI don't know if this will help your concern body odor, but when I used to work out in the gym (bravos to you for working out), I stunk when I worked up a sweat. I don't think anybody's sweat smells good.

I have a friend I love to bits, but when he comes to give me a hug after riding his bike for 3-4 miles, I want to pinch my nose and step back. We're not close enough for me to tell him, "Hey, take a shower first", but I'd tell my BF, family or close friends that they need to shower. If you don't have reason to suspect that your friends and family are lying to you, I don't think they will. Your doctor wouldn't.

That person coming in the door of the gym could have been pregnant or hung over, or ... could have nausea from celiac disease but doesn't know it.

It's really tough at first, but soon your worst days now will be better than your best days then, in everyway. I promise. :D

tested monday...still no results, and im beginning to think maybe i dont even have celiac i havent had ne gluten, still feel like sh**..actually feel worse than i did in the beginning of the week. Its hard to tell what it is im feelin messed up from my naval cavity to mid thigh area, i have like no core!

It could well be that your body is going through withdrawal - about 50% of people do when they quit eating gluten. It will last for a week or two, so hang in there. There's no way you can tell yet whether gluten free will work for you. You are just going to have to be a bit more patient :P

Hang in there tguy. We've all had substantial challenges and multiple illnesses related to this disease. I've found that the smell from marijuana is gone after you shower and brush. I have several other illnesses (CLL, Scoliosis, arthritis, and celiac). I'm hoping to also be able to get a medical marijuana card. Just remember you're not alone and this support group is made up of the most intelligent and compassionate people I've ever had the good fortune to know. Also please feel free to PM if you need to vent.

I also think that the people close to you wouldn't lie about your smell. If you really did smell then surely they would welcome the chance to tell you when you asked. If you want to be really sure why not ask a friend to come to the gym with you and do a sniff test when you have finished working out, as that sounds like the time you thought you smelt the worst.

One of the interesting things about anxiety and depression is that they can involve biases in the way you see the world. If you have suspicions that you have an offensive smell and feel embarrassed or ashamed at the idea you can start only paying attention to things that confirm your beliefs, rather than looking at all the evidence. You can also interpret situations very differently to someone who doesn't have the same concerns.

If you are able to see a psychologist or psychiatrist they might be really helpful in talking you through how to evaluate these sort of situations and make things a bit easier to cope with. I'm not saying for sure this is the case for you, but it's worth seeing whether it might be relevant.

I hope you start feeling better soon.

Hello fellow coeliacs and a Happy New Year I'd appreciate some advice. In December I gave up junk food and ate a new healthy diet, which had a lot of gluten-free oats, nuts, oranges in it, and a quite a lot of black coffee, rather than my usual lattes etc.  After a week or so I felt awful bubbling and bloating in the area which I would say is the ascending and transverse colon.  Earlier in the day it might start with stabbing pain, maybe just two or three 'stabs', or a bit of an ache in my pelvis area, and then by the evening replaced with this awful bloated feeling.   I can still fit into all my clothes, there isn't any visible bloating but a feeling of bloating builds from early afternoon onwards.  The pain and bloating has always gone by the morning.  BMs normal.   I went back to my normal diet over Christmas, for a couple of days things improved, but the bubbling and bloating then came back with a vengeance.  I'm having an ultrasound in a couple of weeks to check my pelvic area and if that is clear I suspect may have to have a colonoscopy, but is there anything anyone can recommend to calm this bloating down.  I have been given an additional diagnosis of IBS in the past but it has never been this severe.   I have to confess that I might have had some gluten over Christmas, I ate a lot of Belgium chocolates which were meant to be gluten free but the small print reveals that they were made in a shared facility, so I have probably brought this all on myself!

I've been buying my seeds and nuts from Prana Organics for a number of years because the products have been GFCO-certified. I just got a new order delivered of their flax and sunflower seeds, and it turns out that they are no longer GFCO-certified. Instead, it just has a generic "Gluten Free" symbol on the package. I reached out to them to ask what protocols/standards/testing they have in place. The person that wrote back said that they are now certifying their gluten free status in-house, but that she couldn't answer my questions related to standards because the person with that info was on vacation. Not very impressed, especially since it still says on their website that they are GFCO-certified. Buyer beware!

Hi @Dizzyma I note what @trents has commented about you possibly posting from the UK.  Just to let you know that am a coeliac based in the UK, so if that is the case, do let me know if can help you with any questions on the NHS provision for coeliacs.    If you are indeed based in the UK, and coeliac disease is confirmed, I would thoroughly recommend you join Coeliac UK, as they provide a printed food and drink guide and also a phone app which you can take shopping with you so you can find out if a product is gluten free or not. But one thing I would like to say to you, no matter where you live, is you mention that your daughter is anxious.  I was always a bit of a nervous, anxious child but before my diagnosis in mid-life my anxiety levels were through the roof.   My anxiety got steadily better when I followed the gluten-free diet and vitamin and mineral deficiencies were addressed.  Anxiety is very common at diagnosis, you may well find that her anxiety will improve once your daughter follows a strict gluten-free diet. I'm assuming you are in the U.K. since you speak of your daughter's celiac disease blood tests as "her bloods".  Has her physician officially diagnosed her has having celiac disease on the results of her blood tests alone? Normally, if the ttg-iga blood test results are positive, a follow-up endoscopy with biopsy of the small bowel lining to check for damage would be ordered to confirm the results of "the bloods". However if the ttg-iga test score is 10x normal or greater, some physicians, particularly in the U.K., will dispense with the endoscopy/biopsy. If there is to be an endoscopy/biopsy, your daughter should not yet begin the gluten free diet as doing so would allow healing of the small bowel lining to commence which may result in a biopsy finding having results that conflict with the blood work. Do you know if an endoscopy/biopsy is planned? Celiac disease can have onset at any stage of life, from infancy to old age. It has a genetic base but the genes remain dormant until and unless triggered by some stress event. The stress event can be many things but it is often a viral infection. About 40% of the general population have the genetic potential to develop celiac disease but only about 1% actually develop celiac disease. So, for most, the genes remain dormant.  Celiac disease is by nature an autoimmune disorder. That is to say, gluten ingestion triggers an immune response that causes the body to attack its own tissues. In this case, the attack happens in he lining of the small bowel, at least classically, though we now know there are other body systems that can sometimes be affected. So, for a person with celiac disease, when they ingest gluten, the body sends attacking cells to battle the gluten which causes inflammation as the gluten is being absorbed into the cells that make up the lining of the small bowel. This causes damage to the cells and over time, wears them down. This lining is composed of billions of tiny finger-like projections and which creates a tremendous surface area for absorbing nutrients from the food we eat. This area of the intestinal track is where all of our nutrition is absorbed. As these finger-like projections get worn down by the constant inflammation from continued gluten consumption before diagnosis (or after diagnosis in the case of those who are noncompliant) the efficiency of nutrient absorption from what we eat can be drastically reduced. This is why iron deficiency anemia and other nutrient deficiency related medical problems are so common in the celiac population. So, to answer your question about the wisdom of allowing your daughter to consume gluten on a limited basis to retain some tolerance to it, that would not be a sound approach because it would prevent healing of the lining of her small bowel. It would keep the fires of inflammation smoldering. The only wise course is strict adherence to a gluten free diet, once all tests to confirm celiac disease are complete.

Hi all, I have so many questions and feel like google is giving me very different information. Hoping I may get some more definite answers here. ok, my daughter has been diagnosed as a coeliac as her bloods show anti TTG antibodies are over 128. We have started her  on a full gluten free diet. my concerns are that she wasn’t actually physically sick on her regular diet, she had tummy issues and skin sores. My fear is that she will build up a complete intolerance to gluten and become physically sick if she has gluten. Is there anything to be said for keeping a small bit of gluten in the diet to stop her from developing a total intolerance?  also, she would be an anxious type of person, is it possible that stress is the reason she has become coeliac? I read that diagnosis later in childhood could be following a sickness or stress. How can she have been fine for the first 10 years and then become coeliac? sorry, I’m just very confused and really want to do right by her. I know a coeliac and she has a terrible time after she gets gluttened so just want to make sure going down a total gluten free road is the right choice. thank you for any help or advise xx
