I drink a Whey Protein shake everyday, and the company ensured me it was gluten free. Should I be staying away from it?

As long as you don't have a dairy allergy/intolerance, you should be fine :)

Whey has nothing to do with gluten...it has to do with milk. So as Michelle said, as long as you are fine with dairy then you should be ok

I was just reading earlier about a gal here on the forum who said she could have a certain margarine because it contained whey, and in my stupidity wasn't thinking it would be a dairy intolerance. Ah Duh!!!!!!!!! I'm just panicing over everything, trying to be absolute gluten-free and see if I start feeling better. Been too long in denial and dabbling and time to smarten up.

Whey & Casein are actually milk *proteins* - whey in particular is a great source of protein for vegetarians. It's in just about every protein shake & bar there is! It's simply the protein, no fat, no lactose - just protein. Most people don't have a problem with it. It's also in a lot of frozen dinners - as a cheap protein source. After I found out that I'm allergic to dairy, I learned that it's in 98% of the convenience foods I ate! Ack! :blink:

But if you are fine with dairy, then you'll be fine with whey - even if you are lactose intolerant (lactose is the milk sugar and is currently removed from most protein shakes & bars). Enjoy ;)

Hi Deb

I am lactose intolerant and I also have whey protein powder every day. Just read the labels. Some brands are either lactose free or have very low lactose. I can tolerate both, even though I am very sensititve. Go figure.

When buying protein powder, also keep in mind that some DO have gluten....either in the form of modified food starch or some type of thickener.

      We were flabergasted that the owner would not acknowledge a $50 e-gift card I purchased for my celiac wife. My wife tried to open it in the store and was informed there had been a system change and they could not find the record. No worries, she was told, just talk to management. Six months later, and numerous absurd back and forths, and the owner literally informs me there have been "bad actors", so she can't make good on this lost gift card. In other words, she accused me of lying and committing fraud... over $50! Please be careful with your orders and purchases here.

      Yes, some people do get withdrawal from gluten but gluten withdrawal doesn't usually cause gut pain. Maybe more like general body aches and discomfort. We have articles on gluten withdrawal on this forum. You might do a search for them. Applesauce is very acidic and some brands have added vitamin C (ascorbic acid) which makes them more acidic. This can damage the stomach lining if you eat it too often. Especially if your stomach lining is already compromised. Ibuprofen inhibits the body's ability to rebuild the stomach's protective mucosal lining. That's why it can cause peptic ulcers. As strange as it may sound, low level irritation/inflammation stimulates the body to rebuild the stomach lining. There are two steps in this rebuilding process known as COX 1 and COX 2. Ibuprofen represses both COX 1 and COX 2. Celecoxcib, a prescription anti inflammatory, inhibits only COX 2, making it less likely to cause damage to the gut lining.

      Do you or anyone know alot about ibuprofen  I wasn't sure if I was eating too much apple sauce.   Something is making my pain so much worse  I'm referring to the intense pins and needles in my feet and lower legs.  Jaw actually has tardive dystonia and muscle spasms throughout my back Almost like an opposite effect that a pain reliever would do. I'm fairly new to this. Whatever is going on seems to be worsening  Do people get a withdrawal effect from gluten?  It's extremely painful 😖  I'll post that question or research on the site  Thank you everyone for responding
