I Have Been By-Passed By Everyone !

The last couple of days, and also yesterday. My youngest son's doctor and his clinic director, have called to appoligize to me. They told me how sorry they were for not giving my youngest son his Celiac Test sooner. My youngest son, Ishmael had been a patient at this medical clinic since his second birthday and, he was seeing the very same doctor all them years. Seven years ago, I was given a diagnoses of celiac Disease at the hospital down the street from his clinic. I asked my son's doctor to give him a test for the very same disease. The Dr. Ginsberg refused to give him a test sighting that it was impossible for my youngest son to have the disease, just because, I had the disease. (He is a very old doctor) He did not believe there was such a disease, he often told me. Last month, he got a very young asistant doctor to work with him. The younger doctor took one look at my son's medical records and, he ordered a Celiac Disease Panel Test. The test came back really positive, 100% positive, the numbers came back really high. The younger doctor said there was no more test needed to prove he had Celiac Disease. Then, yesterday, the older doctor secretary and director of the clinic called to apoligized for not checking my younger son earlier. Why, would they do that at this time? Are they afraid of being suited?

At the same time, they did not ask how, I was doing since, I am the one that gave it to my children. I was married three times, with one son from each wife. Since, the three of them have it, it had to have come from me. I was the one factor in comon for all three sons. They all ask me how the ex-wives were doing and getting along with their Celiac Disease. The doctors and director never ask about me and/or how I was getting along with my Celiac Disease. My youngest son's social worker called and, she ask how my son's were doing so far. She never ask me, how I was doing and coping with the disease. It seems, either they do not believe, I have it or that my ex-wives gave my sons this condition to my sons. Why? They had all kinds of advice for them food, medical, and social wise but, no advice for me. Even the social worker, did not ask about me and, how I was dealing with disease. Very strange !

It seems that everyone that called me was by-passing me. My three ex-wives were all black women. They were test with negative results. Very very low numbers on their tests, There number were so low, it was hard to know is they were even tested. So, why do doctors automatically assume it is the mother whom gives this Celiac Disease to their children?

They are asking about your son because he is their patient. Even when I was still extemely and obviously very ill my children's doctors never asked me how I was doing. You are diagnosed already and the responsibility to ask how you are doing falls on your doctors not your son's doctors. They are asking about your son's mother because they know that they should be tested also. IMHO they are not apologizing because they are afraid of a lawsuit but because they are concerned for your son. Celiac is often missed in us and it isn't something that we can usually sue for.

I agree with Raven. They are not "by-passing" you. They are just asking about your son and your son's mother because it's their job. Does your son ever spend time with his mother? Unless you have 100% custody and the mother never, ever sees him it is important for her to know all the same info you know about yoru son's diagnosis. It may be that the dr is just trying to make sure that she knows how to feed him and is on board with keeping him gluten free. It is also a good sign that they want you son's mother to be tested. It means the drs are aware that this is genetic (some drs like that older one you mentioned are not aware of celiac being genetic). While celiac is MORE COMMON in white, northern european people it is not impossible to be another race and have it. So you dr was just doing his job. Just tell them your ex-wives were already tested and don't have the genes. If you have already told them, tell them again. As Ravenwood said Celaic often takes a long time to be diagnosed. The average time frame a person suffers with active celiac before getting a diagnosis is 9 years.

My ex-wives know all about the Celiac Disease. I shared the information with them. They all slammed the phone down in my face and, they told me not to say that again. They have all three disagreed with every medical test given to my three sons. Each one of the mother's blame me for their son's disorders and diseases. When, my sons were just babies, their mother up and left me alone. They each ran off with another man whom they married had other children and rode off into the sunset. Each one become rich, compared to me. They each knew, I was sick from the military service. What they did not know was that I was sick prior to military service. I knew,I was sick back then but, no one had a name for my sickness. I told them the results of the Celiac Disease test. Each one tells me, they are healthy and their current children are healthy as well. Then, the ex-wives accused me of making thiers sons sick in the first place. Then, when I told them their sons have Celiac Disease, they became very angry at me and slammed the phone down in my ears. Later, each one of them called, me back and told me to never tell them anything negative in regards to their sons health. They love to argue with me over that point. First, you tell me my son has Autism, then you tell me, he has mild retardation now, you tell me he has Celiac Disease. Close you mouth Karl. I do not believe this docotr or his tests. They are all three in denile. Then, they start comparing their current children with Ishmael and, they ask how come the current children are healthy and, Ishmael is sick. Each one of those women believe Ishmael and my other son will become healthy and strong further down the road of life, if they get away from me. Me, I am just trying to get along on my own, and take care of me and my sons, the best I can.

The mothers of my sons do not come around to see them but, very rarely if ever. I have been with my children ever since they were born. I diapered them, clean their clothes, and feed them food, that I cooked. I played the rolls of mother and father the best, I could.

The doctor is looking out for the welfare of your sons. The custodial parents (your ex-wives) are responsible for the meals the children are eating. They need to know how important the gluten free diet is. They should have been made aware that it is possible that they could even develop Celiac Disease themselves.

I would have serious concerns if a child was under the care of parent that is in denial and I did not feel would take the proper medical care for the child.

I think all people here misunderstood me. I have three sons with three different women but, I got the chidren and custody of the children in court. I am the only parent whom has raised my sons. The three mothers did not raise our sons, I did. It is not often that the father gets custody of the children but, I did get custody. The mother of Ishmael does not keep Ishmael in her home or take him on weekends to her home, either. Ishmael stays all the time in my home. She is suppose to visit on weekends if she wants to. She has three other children by her new husband. She feels, she must concentrate on the raising of her three new children. Ishmael has been placed in my home, the ex-husband, me. That is why none of the mothers have had any dealing with my sons because, they got on with their new lives and new husbands. They got new families and, they come from a country that does not believe in disabled children nor, do they tolerate disabled children. Ishmael half brothers and sisters are in excellent health and, only Ishmael is disabled. Ishmael's disabilities come from me not his mother whom is excellent health as well.

I'm sorry. I still think the doctor assumed (in error) the mothers would be more involved with their children and needed to try and explain Celiac Disease to the parent that did not accept the diagnoses.

Certainly, it would b wise to have a gene test done if your physician is open to it as it would provide some more data to understand what's going on. But keep in mind that the genetic test for celiac disease cannot be used as to diagnose celiac disease, only to establish the potential to develop active celiac disease. About 40% of the general population possess one or both of the primary genes known to be associated with the development of active celiac disease but only about 1% of the population actually develop active celiac disease. So, the gene test is an effective "rule out" tool but not an effective diagnostic tool.

So you would be good with the diagnosis and not worry to check genetics etc etc? Appreciate your words!

For those who will likely remain gluten-free for life anyway due to well-known symptoms they have when eating gluten, my general advice is to ignore any doctors who push to go through a gluten challenge to get a formal diagnosis--and this is especially true for those who have severe symptoms when they eat gluten. It can take months, or even years to recover from such a challenge, so why do this if you already know that gluten is the culprit and you won't be eating it anyway?  Approximately 10x more people have non-celiac gluten sensitivity than have celiac disease, but there isn’t yet a test for NCGS. If your symptoms go away on a gluten-free diet it would likely signal NCGS--but those in this group will usually have negative tests, or at best, elevated antibodies that don't reach the level of official positive. Unfortunately test results for celiac disease are not always definitive, and many errors can be made when doing an endoscopy for celiac disease, and they can happen in many ways, for example not collecting the samples in the right areas, not collecting enough samples, or not interpreting the results properly and giving a Marsh score.  Many biopsy results can also be borderline, where there may be certain damage that could be associated with celiac disease, but it just doesn't quite reach the level necessary to make a formal diagnosis. The same is true for blood test results. Over the last 10 years or so a new "Weak Positive" range has been created by many labs for antibody results, which can simply lead to confusion (some doctors apparently believe that this means the patient can decide if they want more testing or to go gluten-free). There is no "Weak Negative" category, for example. Many patients are not told to eat gluten daily, lots of it, for the 6-8 week period leading up to their blood test, nor asked whether or not they've been eating gluten. Some patients even report to their doctors that they've been gluten-free for weeks or months before their blood tests, yet their doctors incorrectly say nothing to them about how this can affect their test, and create false negative results. Many people are not routinely given a total IGA blood test when doing a blood screening, which can lead to false negative interpretations if the patient has low IGA. We've seen on this forum many times that some doctors who are not fully up on how interpret the blood test results can tell patients that the don't need to follow a gluten-free diet or get more testing because only 1 of the 2 or 3 tests done in their panel is positive (wrong!), and the other 1 or 2 tests are negative.  Dermatologists often don't know how to do a proper skin biopsy for dermatitis herpetiformis, and when they do it wrongly their patient will continue to suffer with terrible DH itching, and all the risks associated with celiac disease. For many, the DH rash is the only presentation of celiac disease. These patients may end up on strong prescriptions for life to control their itching which also may have many negative side effects, for example Dapsone. Unfortunately many people will continue to suffer needlessly and eat gluten due to these errors in performing or interpreting celiac disease tests, but luckily some will find out about non-celiac gluten sensitivity on their own and go gluten-free and recover from their symptoms. Consider yourself lucky if you've figured out that gluten is the source of your health issues, and you've gone gluten-free, because many people will never figure this out.
