An endoscopy is where they put a tube down your throat and then go to the small intestine to get samples of the intestines to see if there is damage.

A colonoscopy well they go up the other end...they can't diagnose celiac. Celiac is found in the small intestine and colonoscopies usually only cover the large intestine(colons)

The capsule endo. is where you swallow something small with a camera.

Have you had blood tests?

I had the capsule endscopy back in January. My doctor said that he didn't find anything wrong and that he only saw inflammation in the small intestine. So he said I had IBS. This is the same doctor that 5 years ago told me I had colitis. After the fact I find out that he has a grant to study IBS so I think he is stuck on that dx. I did the enterolab testing and I do have gluten sensitivity. I don't know if celiac disease can be diagnosed with the capsule alone. The capsule takes hundreds of pictures as it travels through your intestines and records them on a computer that is strapped to you. Don't be alarmed when you pass it, it will be flashing as it comes out, made me jump right off the camode. My advise would be to ask your doctor to test you for celiac disease and don't take no for an answer. I now travel several hours to see a GI that I feel comfortable with and trust.

That's insane that the camera is flashing as it comes out! Seriously?! Hard to imagine

Sometimes I feel insane but not that time. It really was flashing! It stops once it hits water

The capsule can't do a biopsy, not much good as a diagnostic tool.

jcgirl- Wow, I'd kind-of like to see it :P

I was thinking the capsule was often used to diagnose Crohns or IBD. I'm not for positive on that. But I would agree, if you don't get a biopsy out of it, it is probably not a beneficial for a Celiac diagnosis as a regular endoscopy/biopsy.

They show images, including one labelled "Celiac Sprue."

They would seem to be implying that the villi damage can be seen without microscopic imaging, which I don't quite buy.

Probably another example of medical professionals who do not understand celiac disease.

This kind of question is always difficult to give a definitive answer to because of so many variables. One such variable is the sensitivity of the individual celiac to small amounts of gluten cross contamination. An amount that causes a reaction in one celiac many not in another, or at least not be discernable which, of course, does not exactly equate to being "safe".

I don't live in the US, but based on this thread, I wouldn't risk it:   https://www.reddit.com/r/glutenfree/comments/1n2ehw8/cracker_barrel/   This app is helpful: https://www.findmeglutenfree.com/

I see that Cracker Barrel restaurants have a gluten free menu (not all locations, but one confirmed that they do). I was wondering if it is safe for my 5 year old son with celiac disease?

Welcome to the forum, @Mmoc! Please include the reference ranges for the IGA and the TTG tests in your next post if you have access to them. We cannot comment much otherwise as different labs use different reference ranges for these tests and also different units of measurement. There are no universal standards as of yet so the raw test numbers are not always helpful. Having said that, if your IGA (what we usually call "total IGA") is low, the TTG-IGA score will be skewed and cannot be trusted. Other kinds of tests for celiac disease would need to be run, particularly those in the IGG family of tests. Perhaps this will be helpful:
