Problems With Fiber?

HI all,

I have been gluten free for 6 months. The first 5 months I felt great and the last month has been really rocky, even though I have been more careful. it seems the more careful I am, the worse I feel! I eat little porcessed foods-maybe some catsup that I've verified is gluten free and a few other condiments but not many at all. the rest is whole, unprocessed foods. I have been eating a lot of fiber, but have been doing that all along. I don't often have brown rice but had some last night and had terrible stomach pains in the night and D this morning. I don't think it was gluten--i can't imagine what I would have eaten that had any gluten in it. Could it be the fiber? Even before diagnosis, i had some trouble with fiber. I don't want to be naive--i think the best explanation is gluten getting in my diet since I do have celiac disease, but since I'm so careful, I wonder what else it could be. how long will it take my body to adjust to eating more fiber? OR do I have another GI issue I need to work out?

Why after 5 months am I feeling sick again? Help please! I would ask my doctor but I'm really not sure they would have any answers.

Do you share a home with anyone eating gluten-containing foods? If so, are you sharing any condiments, spreads, cooking utensils, pots, pans, etc? Some brands of rice may not be safe though. What brand was it?

Although you might have some sensitivity to certain kinds of fiber, it does sound like a case of CC to me. But of course you know your body better than anyone.

no, we are all gluten free except one loaf of bread for hubby to make sandwiches in a separate area of the kitchen. we are very careful. i used a frenchs sauce and kroger catsup and some real maple syrup all yesterday. maybe one of those? ok, and i had some kirtland brand corn chips that say gluten free on them. they are a mission product and have been fine in the past. and a lara bar. Ok, i guess i do eat a few processed things. hmmm...

also it was an organic brand of rice - Lundberg. Says gluten free on it. What brands of rice are not safe?

the other common culprits would be dairy, soy, nuts, and legumes. Have you tried elimination diets for each of those to rule out other food intolerances?

You sound like me... I CANNOT eat very much fiber or I get horrible stomach bloating and gas... I have celiac disease and it feels like glutening, but in my experience it is soy derived fiber additives that are really hard on my system, but more innocent things like spinach, broccoli, etc... can also destroy my guts. Try metamucil- works great for me.

Before my DX I could easily eat two bowls of raisin bran with no GI symptoms (at least immediate symptoms), but when I tried a fiber one bar I was doubled over all day. Doc said it was the Soy blah blah that is added to many products to give them the X% daily fiber claim.

I seem to have trouble with certain veggies that should not bother me. Every time I eat yams or sweet potatoes, I either get D, or they show up the next morning totally undigested. Asparagus does the same thing to me. I thought it was because after years of living on junk/fast food, my body couldn't handle the fiber.

But, I eat broccoli and cauliflower with no problems. I have no idea why.

Thanks for the responses. It's so hard to figure this stuff out. I should try an elimination diet. I wonder if my body will be able to tolerate more fiber down the road once I'm completely healed? I am dairy free right now too.

Have you tried Pure Encapsulations supplements? This is a brand my doctor recommends for me. I have no issues with this brand.

plant sources of calcium, such as spinach, have calcium bound to oxalates, which is not good. best source of calcium is unfortunately dairy, do you tolerate dairy? fermented dairy like kefir is good and or a little hard cheese. i do eat dairy, i can only take so much dietary restriction and gluten is hard enough! but i guess some people do have bad reactions to it, so different for everyone.

i take b12, folate, b2, b6, glycine, Nac, zinc, vk2 mk4, magnesium, coq10, pqq, tmg, creatine, omega 3, molybdnem (sp) and just started vit d. quite a list i know.  I have high homocysteine (last checked it was 19, but is always high and i finally decided to do something about it) and very low vitamin d, 10. have been opposed to this supp in the past, but going to try it at 5k units a day. having a pth test on friday, which is suspect will be high. my homocysteine has come down to around 9 with 3 weeks of these supplements and expect it to go down further. i also started on estrogen/progesterone. I have osteoporosis too, so that is why the hormones.  anyway, i think all celiacs should have homocysteine checked and treated if needed (easy enough with b vit, tmg). homocysteine very bad thing to be high for a whole host of reasons. all the bad ones, heart attack , stroke, alzi, cancer..... one of the most annoying things about celiacs (and there are so many!) is the weight gain. i guess i stayed thin all those years being undiagnosed because i was under absorbing everything including calories. going gluten-free and the weight gain has been terrible, 30#, but i'm sure a lot more went into that (hip replacement - and years of hip pain leading to inactivity when i was previously very active, probably all related to celiacs, menopause) yada yada. i seemed to lose appetite control, like there was low glp, or leptin or whatever all those hormones are that tell you that you are full and to stop eating. my appetite is immense and i'm never full. i guess decades or more ( i think i have had celiacs since at least my teens - was hospitalized for abdominal pain and diarrhea for which spastic colon was eventually diagnosed and had many episodes of diarrhea/abdominal pain through my 20's. but that symptom seemed to go away and i related it to dairy much more so than gluten. Also my growth was stunted, i'm the only shorty in my family. anyway, decades of malabsorption and maldigestion led to constant hunger, at least thats my theory. then when i started absorbing normally, wham!! FAT!!!

Great advise there I agree with the aniexty part, and the aura migraine has I suffer both, I've also read some great books that have helped I'm going too look the one you mentioned up too thankyou for that, I find a camomile tea just a small one and a gentle wind down before bed has helped me too, I suffer from restless leg syndrome and nerve pain hence I don't always sleep well at the best of times , racing mind catches up I have decorated my whole house in one night in my mind before 🤣 diet changes mindset really help , although I have to say it never just disappears, I find once I came to terms with who I am I managed a lot better  , a misconception is for many to change , that means to heal but that's not always the case , understanding and finding your coping mechanisms are vital tools , it's more productive to find that because there is no failure then no pressure to become something else , it's ok to be sad it's ok to not sleep , it's ok to worry , just try to see it has a journey not a task 🤗
