Hi,

I was fixing lunch with my mom over the weekend. She was going to make whole wheat pasta. I was helping her out by dumping the pasta in the pot. Without thinking, I grabbed a handful. Immediately, My hand started hurting. The next day, my head hurt , my asthma got worse, and my energy was zapped. I still feel the effects of this and it is Tuesday! This has never happened before. Could my gluten condition be getting worse? I am trying to "cleanse" my system of the many months of sneaking off limits foods. I have yet to be tested for celiac disease.

Thanks,

Traci

Usually touching will not cause a reaction, its the ingesting that does. Could you have gotten a little bit into your mouth through cross contamination? Or did you have a cut in your hand?

I for one get reactions from just being around wheat and when I touch it..I have in addition to celiac a true severe allergy to wheat. So, there is always that possibility that you may have an allergy as well.

I have known people that say that they have a problem touching it so it would not surprise me if that would cause a problem.

Hi Traci,

My daughter Hannah carried in the flour bag for my mom and her cheeks broke out in DH. It took about two weeks for the rash to go away. So we learned that even touching it can cause problems.

She isn't the only one. A nutritionist I know had me hold a package of wheat to my stomach with one hand while my other arm was outstretched to my side..He told me to try and resist the pressure he put on my outstretched arm.

All he did was lightly tap it and it felt as though my shoulder was being torn off.

It was painful!

We then repeated the experiment with packages of corn and then rice and I was able to resist with no pain at all.

I'm finding that the more "clean" I get (eliminating gluten from my diet) the more sensitive I become to small exposures? Is this normal or am I getting worse?

While not everyone gets worse or more sensitive the longer they are off gluten, many still do. I'm one who is way more sensitive. I'm also that way about one of my other food intolerances - nightshades. I used to eat tomatoes and potatoes a lot, also peppers, and I guess I did feel sick a lot but didn't figure it out until 6 years back. Now I can get sick for a couple of days if I *smell* peppers cooking on a BBQ... or touching cut peppers. Not fun!

I was thinking about getting strength tested for gluten and other foods but heck, I'm pretty aware at this point of what does what to me so I haven't bothered. I go back and forth on eggs and mushrooms and my chiropractor offered to do this for me but I never went and did it. I wasn't sure I believed in strength testing at first but I know for a fact what it did in healing my back/shoulder! Wow!

hi, i want to say thank you to you and @trents   . after 2 phone calls to my GI, her office called me back to tell me that a blood test was “unnecessary” and that we should “follow the gold standard” and since my biopsy did not indicate celiac, to follow the no dairy and sucraid diet. i luckily have expendable income and made an appt for the labcorp blood test that day. i just got my results back and it indicates celiac disease i think 😭   im honestly happy bc now i KNOW and i can go gluten free. and i am SO MAD at this doctor for dismissing me for a simple blood test that wouldn’t have cost her anything !!!!!!!!!!! im sorry, im so emotional right now, i have been sick my whole life and never knew why, i feel so much better already   my results from labcorp:   Celiac Ab tTG TIgA w/Rflx Test Current Result and Flag Previous Result and Date Units Reference Interval t-Transglutaminase (tTG) IgA 01 28 High U/mL 0-3 Negative 0 - 3 Weak Positive 4 - 10 Positive >10 Tissue Transglutaminase (tTG) has been identified as the endomysial antigen. Studies have demonstrated that endomysial IgA antibodies have over 99% specificity for gluten sensitive enteropathy. Immunoglobulin A, Qn, Serum 01 245 mg/dL 87-352

      Thank you this really helped.

Okay that is really good to know. So with that being positive and the other being high it makes sense she diagnosed her even without the endoscopy. So glad we caught it early. She had so many symptoms though that to me it was clear something was wrong.   yeah I think we had better test us and the other kids as well.

One doctor suggested it, but then seemed irritated when I asked follow-up questions. Oh well—

@GlorietaKaro, your respiratory reactions to gluten make me wonder if there might also be an allergic (anaphylaxis) component at work here.
