Braces (orthodontic)

Rod

Recommended Posts

Rod Newbie

I was diagnosed 5 years ago and have no trouble sticking to the diet.

I am quite anal about anything I put in my mouth and that is why I was wondering if anyone out there has had braces put on their teeth after being diagnosed and whether or not you have had any side-effects from them?

I had braces before the onset of my symptoms.I wore them probably a year before my symptoms started. They were a bit painful at first but that's about it.

I have been relatively symptom free now for 7 months and I do not want to proceed with them if the procedure or any substance they use in installing them might cause a reaction.

Thanks for your response.

I have been sending notes to our Celiac association, (Ottawa & Canada sites) and have not received any response.

I am beginning to think that maybe, just maybe I am over-reacting.

But as you well know, better to be safe than sorry.

Thanks again!

Any others?

I have braces on right now! I have not had any "gluten" problems. Maybe a little tenderness from time to time when they put on a new wire, but that is only temporary. :) I have the clear ones... can't even see them, can you??!!?? :)

Won't matter to me if/when I do get them, if they can be seen or not.

I am 44 and just excited about the fact that I may have straight teeth one day.

I always felt that my teeth would not last me very long as I was always at the dentist, but since being gluten-free, my teeth seem to have stabilized and I now think they may be with me for a while.

My wife and kids think it is a great idea!

When they put the braces on I am not sure what kind of adhesive they use but you may want to check and see if that is gluten free. Also when and if they do impressions you need to see if that stuff is gluten free. Those would be the only things that come to my head right now.

Also when you go to the dentist to get your teeth cleaned make sure that the stuff they use is gluten free because some is not.

They won't cause any harm gluten-wise, but if you have amalgam fillings, metal braces can lead to more mercury emissions in your mouth. Mercury can cause complications in people who are susceptible to autoimmune diseases. A non-metal kind of braces like Invisalign should be fine. If you don't have these kind of fillings, there shouldn't be any problems of this nature. Good luck.

Oh wow... I didn't think of all of that.

Rod: I know how you feel. I am 42 and just now fixing my teeth after doing my childrens' first! :) It is nice to finally have a pretty mouth (some day). :)

Congrats and good luck!!

With all the positive feedback, I guess I have no more excuses.

Thanks all.

Very much appreciated!

I have trouble with nausea. It often starts when I’m anxious about something (home repairs, sick dog) but continues long after the home is repaired or the dog is healthy again. When it happens I eat less and lose weight.  My gastroenterologist suggested ginger or peppermint tea. I don’t know if that will work or not because I haven't had the problem since she suggested it.

Hello  I'm not sure what to think . Seems no matter what I do I get sick. I had some yogurt with only 2 grams of sugar and is labeled gluten free ...the strawberry version seemed to really set me off My jaw is burning as well as my stomach and my feet.  Horrible pain..plus acid reflux and nausea... sensitivity to touch pain. ..yikes !! I don't know if it's from the lactose in the yogurt or if I'm getting an ulcer  This condition can make you question yourself quite a bit.  Then if you are not sure the anxiety comes 😞 Does any of these symptoms sound familiar to anyone? The neuropathy is quite intense.  What do you eat or drink after this happens  Open to suggestions  Thank you

Of course my son is on a 100% gluten free diet.  I wish his symptoms were not debilitating as there are right now.  He cannot work, even when a miniscule of cross contamination occurs.  It's not just GI distress, but intense fatigue, brain fog, depression, anxiety, insomnia, etc.  It's literally neurological inflammation.  Not to be taken lightly here.  We have sought out many other possible ways to cope during this window of time (8 months!!!!)  without success.   AN-PEP does not help and seems like studies on this are not well researched.  So, we are trying this out because research shows some promising results.  And, all participants showed no cravings afterwards, no signs of addiction.  The patch is different than the oral route such as smoking, vaping, gum, pouch, etc.

Have you tried AN-PEP enzymes, for example, GlutenX (who is a sponsor here)? A lot of research has shown that it can break down small amounts of gluten in the stomach, before it reaches the intestines. It might be a better approach than risking nicotine addiction, and the questionable research around this. I also hope that he’s trying to be 100% Gluten-Free.

Hi all  I was diagnosed Coeliac a few years ago and follow a gluten free diet. The list of foods that I can eat without a problem grows shorter on a weekly basis. [I also have diabetes and asthma also].  BUT the reason I am posting this is because I seem to struggle with nausea quite a lot, which is really quite debilitating, and I was wondering if others suffer from nausea, even if following a gluten free diet.
