Gluten Free Toddler... Soon To Be Milk Free?

Hi all. Looking for some advice from people who know their food.

I am self diagnosed celiac / NCGI ... whatever the case may be. My hubby and I decided to put our DS on a gluten-free diet a few months after he started ingesting gluten due to his awful bm's and diaper rash. Those have cleared up since we changed his diet. And his mystery fevers went away too!

Now we are starting to transition him off formula (he was breastfed till the age of 10 months but I couldn't sustain my supply by pumping at work). At that point we switched him to a cow's milk formula and he has continued to thrive. At 15 months he's. A hefty 27 lbs.

Now the daycare wants to transition him to the toddler room but they only give them milk or water in that room. DS won't touch milk, though. And to be honest I don't drink much milk at all and never thought it was too healthy for humans to drink. At the moment, we are thinking of cutting out his formula during the day and having the daycare only give him water. He will continue to get formula in the morning and evening. Then when we phase out the formula he will basically only get water to drink.

Does this sound OK? We will have no problem making sure he gets lots of green veggies to get his calcium since I make all our food from scratch.

People I've mentioned this to look at me like I'm crazy. Mind you they're the same ones who don't flinch at the idea of feeding their own kids Kraft dinner with a side of hotdogs!

Thanks for any input you can give.

if you don't want him to have milk at day care, tell them water is fine. you can make sure he gets the calcium he needs at home.

My 18 month old drinks Almond Milk. It actually has more calcium than Cow's Milk. I give her the Vanilla flavored because she needs the calories (she is only 20.8lbs). I have never had a daycare question giving my child the milk that I provide. Not sure if you want to do that, but it is a great alternative to Cow's Milk.

My son would not drink milk when it was time to take him off his formula. So what we did is mix a little milk into his formula and slowly mix more milk in until he was drinking straight milk. it took about 6 weeks or so, but we got it done. we started out with 1 part milk 3 parts formula. he drinks lactaid because he seems to be lactose intolerant also gluten free witch he gets from me. I like regular milk myself. Almond milk sounds like a good option also, but i like the quality of the protein in cows milk.

Hey there, have you been tested for allergies? You may not only have celiac disease but be allergic. I have celiac disease and am allergic to Barley, wheat and rye.

I have osteopenia and have cracked three vertebrae.  Niacin is connected to osteoporosis! Do talk to your nutritionist and doctor about supplementing with B vitamins.  Blood tests don't reveal the amount of vitamins stored inside cells.  The blood is a transportation system and can reflect vitamins absorbed from food eaten in the previous twenty-four to forty-eight hours.  Those "normal limits" are based on minimum amounts required to prevent disease, not levels for optimal health.   Keep us posted on your progress.   B Vitamins: Functions and Uses in Medicine https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9662251/ Association of dietary niacin intake with osteoporosis in the postmenopausal women in the US: NHANES 2007–2018 https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC11835798/ Clinical trial: B vitamins improve health in patients with coeliac disease living on a gluten-free diet https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/19154566/   Nutritional Imbalances in Adult Celiac Patients Following a Gluten-Free Diet https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8398893/ Nutritional Consequences of Celiac Disease and Gluten-Free Diet https://www.mdpi.com/2036-7422/15/4/61 Simplifying the B Complex: How Vitamins B6 and B9 Modulate One Carbon Metabolism in Cancer and Beyond https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9609401/

Thank you so much for the clarification! Yes to these questions: Have you consulted dietician?  Have you been checked for nutritional deficiencies?  Osteoporosis? Thyroid? Anemia?  Do you take any supplements, or vitamins? I’m within healthy range for nutritional tests, thyroid and am not anemic. I do have osteopenia. I don’t take any medications, and the dietician was actually a nutritionist (not sure if that is the same thing) recommended by my physician at the time to better understand gluten free eating.    I almost wish the gluten exposure had triggered something, so at least I’d know what’s going on. So confusing!    Many thanks!
