Juicing

I tried juicing this morning for the first time and am so glad i did! It had apple, cucumber, celery, carrot, beetroot and ginger and was the best tasting drink I've had in a long time. I was wondering if it might not be better for me to get my veggies/fruit this way as my guts seem to hate dealing with high fibre - whole veggies. Also I've been peeing like a loon, so I guess it is also good for flushing out toxins - which I've had a big problem with recently. Then perhaps I can stop worrying about adding in vitamins/minerals too, as the juice has them all? Have to say that I feel very bouncy! And the herb mix I'm on seems to be making me feel better and better day on day.... Thanks to those in the thread last time who said that things will get better... now I am starting to see it.

I've never tried juicing, but it seems like a good way to get nutrients into your body? It seems like you can add all sorts of things to boost the vitamins?

I'm so glad that you feel like like you're starting to turn the corner and feeling better! :D

Glad to hear you are doing better Caroline! You so deserve to be feeling better, so I am glad something is working for you.

It makes me wonder if my friend Graeme should try juicing things again. His intestines are so sore from taking a lot of grapefruit seed extract and uva ursi recently to counteract a bladder infection. I think he had both items a bit too much since he had intestinal bacteria that his doc got rid of by using those very same herbs this last Fall and Summer. I took him off them when I realized what was happening, and the new herbs really helped.

He got over the infection but now can hardly eat anything without severe pain due to gut inflammation. Right now I have him off chicken. Instead he's sipping watered down goats milk yogurt with a little slippery elm. It seems like its all he can manage, except for the occasional avocado--all soft, non fibrous foods. Even cooked celery and sweet potato was too much for him. Any suggestions??

I think too he may have the beginnings of RA--like his mother had. He's been having a lot of inflammation with weakness and difficulty walking. Even his skin seems slightly reddened and apparently is sensitive. He sees his naturopath in another week. He is mostly Welsh with some English. Are these kinds of conditions common there?? My feeling is that the English typically have very sensitive digestion.

Right now I am doing way better. I discovered I am amine intolerant as well as salicylate intolerant. Eating the sauerkraut, gluten-free miso and extra fermented yogurt was way the wrong thing for me. However by doing so it pointed out what really was going on. By avoiding amines I am actually starting to sleep soundly. Its hard to believe! The last four days I have been able to go to sleep an hour earlier--and I am starting to feel more refreshed in the morning--a first for me.

Maybe its Spring, but the world seems more possible. Am so very glad for both of us!! Keep up the good work Caroline! I'll be sure to suggest juicing to Graeme.

I love juicing! :D I think it's an amazing way to get fruits and veggies into our systems. I'm about to make a big green juice for lunch. Super yummy!!!

Oh dear, poor poor Graeme. Juicing might be the way forward but I would go with the softest most soothing of vegetables like cucumber and well cooked beetroot (not in vinegar!). Keep away from the acidic stuff like lemons/toms etc. Has he tried warm well cooked white rice with butter. I find that works really well if my gut feels very sore. Gut inflammation is just awful. I would say stop taking everything vit/herb/bacteria wise until everything calms down. Just soft white rice, or perhaps potato if he can tolerate solanaceae. Perhaps also some warm soup. You said you took him off chicken. What about bone broth? He is so lucky to have a friend like you!!! It should take just a few days to calm down, then he can start adding things back in. He won't be missing too much nutrition in a few days and can catch up later.

Sorry to be dense Bea but what is RA - Rheumatoid Arthritis? Shall I look up in my books to see what they say? Once he is settled then he can go back to the fermented foods. I think in the short term as there is quite a bit of acid in fermented yoghurt it may be hurting him more than helping him. cutting back and adding in might be the way to go here.

On a great note I had a test exam and a presentation to give last week. I got 80% in the exam (anatomy and physiology) and a high 2:1, which would be about 69% for the presentation (with two other ladies). So am feeling quite chipper about that. We did the presentation on the first day of spring! We are out planting in the garden. Clipped our dog Pippo today too and have done a raft of other things. You are right about the spring.

On not so great a note I asked my husband to take an autism quotient test today and he came out with a lower score than me... however, I know for sure he has aspergers. He is just too well adapted to doing a test like this honestly! Somehow I need to get him to see a specialist who can diagnose him properly. I expect he will go to the grave before he does something like that!

Hugs to everyone who responded on this. Long live Juicing!

Oh how I wish I could try juicing :( But I can't really have fruit and definitely not juiced fruit because it spikes my sugar and I end up with heartburn and throwing up when my sugar is high from that.

Poor you Alex. Hopefully one day. Can you not do veggie juicing instead?

I'm not sure how just veggies would taste...other then that I may be able to get away with just veggies. Pretty much everything I have found on juicing puts fruits and veggies together.

What you’re describing really does not read like typical IBS-D. The dramatic, rapid normalization of stool frequency and form after removing wheat, along with improved tolerance of legumes and plant foods, is a classic pattern seen in gluten-driven disease rather than functional IBS. IBS usually worsens with fiber and beans, not improves. The fact that you carry HLA-DQ2.2 means celiac disease is absolutely possible, even if it’s less common than DQ2.5, and many people with DQ2.2 present later and are under-diagnosed. Your hesitation to reintroduce gluten is completely understandable — quality of life matters — and many people in your position choose to remain strictly gluten-free and treat it as medically necessary even without formal biopsy confirmation. If and when you’re ready, a physician can help you weigh options like limited gluten challenge, serology history, or documentation as “probable celiac.” What’s clear is that this wasn’t just random IBS — you identified the trigger, and your body has been very consistent in its response.

oh that's interesting... it's hard to say for sure but it has *seemed* like oats might be causing me some vague issues in the past few months. It's odd that I never really connect specific symptoms to foods, it's more of an all over feeling of unwellness after  eating them.  If it happens a few times after eating the same foods- I cut back or avoid them. for this reason I avoid dairy and eggs.  So far this has worked well for me.  oh, I have some of Bob's Red Mill Mighty Tasty Hot cereal and I love it! it's hard to find but I will be looking for more.  for the next few weeks I'm going to be concentrating on whole fresh fruits and veggies and beans and nuts and seeds. I'll have to find out if grains are truly necessary in our diet. I buy brown rice pasta but only eat that maybe once a month at most. Never liked quinoa. And all the other exotic sounding grains seem to be time consuming to prepare. Something to look at later. I love beans and to me they provide the heft and calories that make me feel full for a lot longer than a big bowl of broccoli or other veggies. I can't even tolerate the plant milks right now.  I have reached out to the endo for guidance regarding calcium intake - she wants me to consume 1000mgs from food daily and I'm not able to get to more than 600mgs right now.  not supposed to use a supplement until after my next round of testing for hyperparathyroidism.   thanks again- you seem to know quite a bit about celiac.

Welcome to the celiac.com community, @SilkieFairy! You could also have NCGS (Non Celiac Gluten Sensitivity) as opposed to celiac disease. They share many of the same symptoms, especially the GI ones. There is no test for NCGS. Celiac disease must first be ruled out.

Under the circumstances, your decision to have the testing done on day 14 sounds very reasonable. But I think by now you know for certain that you either have celiac disease or NCGS and either way you absolutely need to eliminate gluten from your diet. I don't think you have to have an official diagnosis of celiac disease to leverage gluten free service in hospitals or institutional care and I'm guessing your physician would be willing to grant you a diagnosis of gluten sensitivity (NCGS) even if your celiac testing comes up negative. Also, you need to be aware that oats (even gluten free oats) is a common cross reactor in the celiac community. Oat protein (avenin) is similar to gluten. You might want to look at some other gluten free hot  breakfast cereal alternatives.
