Refried Beans

Hello all,

Forgive me if I'm missing something, I'm kind of a newb to all this having only been gluten-free for about a month. But somehow, I've managed to gluten myself, and I'm trying to figure out the culprit.

We had tacos for dinner tonight. I used corn torillas (labeled gluten-free,) 100% organic beef seasoned with McCormick taco seasoning, spanish rice (labeled gluten-free,) and La Preferida Authentic refried beans.

Because I'm preeeeeeetty sure everything else was "safe," I'm suspect on these beans.

The ingredients are as follows:

Water

Pinto Beans

Lard

Salt

...so it seemed pretty safe to me. I just sent an e-mail to the manufacturer to confirm. Has anyone else expirenced a problem with these, or can the more seasoned gluten-free veterans see anything else in my menu which might have caused my reaction?

We eat those beans all the time. I love that there is nothing in the ingredients that shouldn't be there. I can't remember about that taco seasoning. There are a few with wheat.

You are new to this, why are you sure it's gluten? Why not too spicy? Cheese? Margarita? Too greasy? Lunch that's bothering you? A stomach virus? Just an in- healed gut that isn't handling all foods well. Sometimes, in the beginning, it could be anything that bothers us.

I did some pseudo-sleuthing (read: Google searching) on the Taco Seasoning before use. It seems to be okay, and I don't read anything on the ingredient list that seems suspect. But I'll continue to use caution.

Thanks for pointing out that it might not be gluten related. You may be right. I just assumed it was a gluten issue because I had the same reaction that I did when I used to eat gluten all the time. I had to run to the bathroom with painful results. (TMI? LOL. Sorry.) In my head, same old bathroom issues = same old causes. But you're right, I *am* very new to all this and it could have been anything. I've read on these boards that a lot of people also have trouble with dairy when going gluten-free. I didn't think I had that issue, but there WAS cheese on my taco... I'll be paying attention that that in the future, as well.

Also, I have to tell you that I LOL'ed at the "spicy" part. I am Irish to my core -- flavor usually scares me away. I think most BBQ sauces are too spicy. I think I'm safe on that front. :)

:ph34r:I had to give up corn for about six months, even though it was a mainstay of my diet for a few months after going gluten-free. Your antibodies could be attacking a similar protein.

Did you just put the pug picture on? We love pugs.

When I was new, it was hard to pinpoint what bothered me. Sometimes I think it could be an accumulation of things - not enough fiber, too much fiber, to much fat, raw veggies. One or all adding up to a disturbance in the gut. ( really wanted to say in the Force). It can take months or even a year or 2 to get everything healed and balanced.

We love pugs, too!! My sister has a lil pug named Finnegan, and I think its safe to say we're all a little obsessed with him. If I wasn't posting from my phone, I'd include photos. :-)

Again, thanks for the insight. It still FEELS like a glutening to me, but I feel like I've been SO careful... Who knows??

It's comforting to talk to (type to?) others who have gone through the same thing.

I found and made some taco seasoning tonight, because I assumed all the McCormack's stuff wasn't gluten-free. Anyway, the seasoning was easy; the formula is from the link below. I made enough to store in ziplock bags for the next several times I'll need it and already had all the stuff on hand.

McCormick's has several taco seasoning packages. Some are gluten-free. They each have a different combo of flavors. The one that had cheese flavoring added also had gluten.

We always have to read the ingredient list. :blink:

I used McCormicks original seasoning.... The ingredient label didn't have any red flags that stuck out to me!

Hi, I am in my second week of going gluten free. I also eat this brand of refried beans, and haven't had any kind of reaction. I have, however, had reactions to anything with citric acid. I'm with the other people, it may be a different ingredient causing the issue. I heard a lot of people can't tolerate dairy at first, so if you put cheese in the beans, like I do, that may have been it. Lucky for me, I seem to be able to tolerate cheese.

      Hi, thank you for the reply. Unfortunately, no other antibody tests were ordered. I am a 32-year-old male. About two months ago, I ate pancakes and then developed severe diarrhea that lasted the entire day. At night, I became unconscious due to fluid loss and was admitted to the ER, where I received IV fluids. Two days later, I ate bread again and once more developed severe diarrhea. I ended up in the ER again and received IV fluids. In my country, Pakistan, doctors are unfortunately not very thorough, so they treated me for a stomach infection. I visited three or four doctors, including a gastroenterologist, but it seemed like they just wanted to keep me on medications and IV fluids. Eventually, I did some digging myself and started connecting the dots. For years, I’ve had excessive gas buildup and frequent loose stools, but I never paid much attention to it. I also cannot easily digest dairy products. Two years ago, I had a CBC test that showed iron deficiency. My doctor told me to eat more meat and said it was nothing serious. However, for the past five years, I’ve also had severe motion sickness, which I never experienced before. Whenever I get on a bus or in a car, I sometimes lose consciousness for 10–20 seconds and wake up sweaty, and occasionally I feel the need to vomit. After more research on the internet, I came across gluten and celiac disease, so I got two related tests (TTG-IgA & TTG IgG) done along with a stool test and another CBC. The stool test showed weakly positive blood. Ever since eating those pancakes and bread, I’ve had a burning sensation in my gut. My doctor reviewed my tests, he told me to completely stop eating gluten and started me on IV fluids for 20 days, saying that I had severe inflammation in my gut. It has now been two months since I quit gluten, and I’m still not sure whether this is celiac disease or gluten intolerance. I don’t really trust doctors in Pakistan, so I thought I might get some help here.

      Welcome to the celiac.com community, @SamAlvi! Were there any other antibody tests ordered? Particularly, was there a "total IGA" test ordered to check for IGA deficiency. When people are IGA deficient, celiac panel IGA test scores, such as the TTG-IGA, are likely not valid. If a total IGA test was not ordered, I would request such to be done. Note: "Total IGA" goes by other names as well. I will include a primer on celiac disease antibody testing which does a good job in covering the nomenclature variations connected with the various tests. Elevated IGG scores can certainly indicate celiac disease but they are more likely than elevated IGA tests to be caused by something else.

      Thank you— yes, valid and essential— The issue either doctors is that every one I have tried to talk to about this has essentially rolled their eyes and dismissed me as a hypochondriac, which gets discouraging. I believe a diagnosis would help me to be taken seriously by doctors as well as being validating, but can carry on without it.    There are many, probably most people in my area of my age and gender, who avoid gluten, but many just avoid it casually— eating the occasional plate of wheat pasta or a delicious-looking dessert, or baking cookies with wheat flour for gatherings.  That is not an option for me. I don’t eat other people’s cooking or go to restaurants that do not have strict cross- contamination procedures. It can be boring and lonely, and people do look at me as if I am being a bit dramatic but weeks of symptoms after a single small exposure has taught me to respect my experience.    Thank you very much for your response— sometimes I just need to hear that I am not crazy—

      You’re not crazy—some people have severe neurological and physical reactions to gluten, not just digestive issues. While testing can be tricky without eating gluten, documenting symptoms and seeing a specialist familiar with atypical celiac or gluten-related disorders can help. Your reactions are real, and it’s valid to be cautious.
