Balance

Hey Everyone!

I just had a celiac blood screening done on Monday I haven't received the results yet, however I was wondering if anyone else has experienced any issues with balance. I find at times (more often at night) I have a real problem with balance and find myself sort of swaying or feeling like i'm going to fall.

Has anyone else experienced this???

Thanks

Danijela

I used to get dizziness and ringing in my ear ..... seemed to be associated with my headaches, which, I now know, were caused by a gluten reaction. I'd like to see what others have to say as well. I hope it clears up for you!

I believe that there has been a reported connection between balance issues and the central nervous system manifestations of celiac disease in some people. Others on the board have discussed this before, and I'm sure they'll have some useful information for you soon! :-)

If it does turn out that I have celiac disease, then balance would have been my first, most obvious symptom. I had an incident of heat exhaustion and then I got mono in the same 3-4 month period, then after that, I could only stand a certain way if I didn't have someone to hang on to. I thought it was secondary to the heat exhaustion. My balance got a little better over time, but it's still pretty bad.

Yes,my husband definitely had a problem with his balance.

After standing he would have to stand and 'sway' for a minute while he waited for the dizzyness and nausea to pass.Sometimes though it would come over him out the blue.My husband compared it to 'almost fainting'.

Now that he seems to be recovering on gluten-free diet he hasn't had any spells for ages.

Good luck with your results!

Yes, It is called gluten ataxia, this was my main symptom other than constipation and learning problems as a kid. It got so bad with me that I was thought to have MS. It is also the first sign that I have gotten into something I shouldn't have. The ataxia hits within minutes of injestion, depression and DH blisters the next day then the GI symptoms the next. Being gluten-free stopped the ataxia within a very short time. I was able to give up my canadian canes within 2 months. They are now a sculpture of sorts in the corner of my bedroom. And the best part is no one thinkds I drink anymore, people (including one neuro) thought I was hiding an alcohol problem. They never believed me when I told them I didn't drink more than 2 non-alcoholic beers on a Saturday night. Of course now I know I was geting drunk effects from the gluten in the beer. I can drink half a bottle of wine and not have the same hangover and drunkenness I used to get from 2 non-alcoholic beer.

I don't see how cornstarch could alter the test results. Where did you read that?

For pain relief I take a combination of Thiamine (Benfotiamine), Pyridoxine B 6, and Cobalamine B12.  The combination of these three vitamins has analgesic effects.  I have back pain and this really works.  The B vitamins are water soluble and easily excreted.   Hope this helps!  Keep us posted on your results!

Welcome to the forum, @Xravith. I experienced similar symptoms before my diagnosis.  Mine were due to the loss of vitamins and minerals, essential nutrients we must get from our food.  With Celiac Disease, the intestinal lining, made up of thousands of villi, gets damaged and cannot absorb essential vitamins and minerals, especially the eight B vitamins.  The loss of Thiamine B 1 can cause muscle loss, inability to gain weight, edema (swelling), fatigue, migraines and palpitations.  Low thiamine can cause Gastrointestinal Beriberi with symptoms of nausea, abdominal pain and bloating.   Thiamine is only stored for a couple of weeks, so if you don't absorb enough from food daily, as the thiamine deficiency worsens physical symptoms gradually worsen.  If you're eating lots of carbs (like gluten containing foods usually do), you need more thiamine to process them (called high calorie malnutrition).  Thiamine works with all the other B vitamins, so if you're low in one, you're probably getting low in the others, too, and minerals like iron, magnesium, zinc, and calcium, as well as Vitamin D..  Talk to your doctor about checking for nutritional deficiencies.  Most doctors rarely recognize vitamin deficiency symptoms, especially in thiamine. Get a DNA test to see if you carry any Celiac genes.  If you do not have genetic markers for Celiac, it's probably IBS.  If you do have genetic markers for Celiac, it's probably Celiac.  I was misdiagnosed with IBS for years before my Celiac diagnosis.   Keep us posted on your progress. P. S. Deficiency in thiamine can cause false negatives on antibody tests, as can diabetes and anemia.

No she didn't because if I want to ask I have to pay 700$ for 1 hour appointment so I couldn't even ask. I read that fillers like cornstash can alter the result and tylenol contains it so that's why I tried to find someone who can answer.

Did the GI doc give you any rational for stopping the Tylenol during the gluten challenge? I have never heard of this before and I can't imagine a good reason for it. Ibuprofen, maybe, because it is an anti inflammatory but acetaminophen?  I don't see that it would have any impact on the test results to take Tylenol.
