Is poop NOT supposed to float?

Doesn't EVERYBODY's poop float?

And what does it mean that it floats? Ie. Why does it float, and what does this have to do with celiac disease?

I think it's undigested fat that makes it float. There must be something else going on. You have been avoiding all of your "poisons". Maybe you're getting CC'd somehow?

I was glutened big time last week by something careless. I am still having the floating stool. Hopefully it resolves soon!

Thanks for the info, thats what I thought it was but wasn't sure exactly.

I dealt with that for the last 17 years. Since this is a TMI post to begin with, lol, I will just say that for the past 17 years, maybe..just MAYBE 1 out of 10 movements for me were anywhere CLOSE to "normal". So I always thought what was going on with me was normal, or normal for me, so I just dealt with it and didnt complain.

This past year I started getting sicker and sicker and finally went to the Dr who brought up Celiac disease. I have been doing so much research on it and got referred to a GI specialist. I finished all my testing and had to wait 3 weeks for my follow up appt, so I stopped eating Gluten as soon as all tests were done. For 3 weeks I was gluten-free and for 3 weeks, I experienced what is SUPPOSED to be normal movements. I swear to God, I felt like I was acomplishing feats of magic. It felt so good to be regular. It was amazing. I had NO IDEA what normal was.

Then I saw my GI who told me all my tests were negative and I do NOT have celiac..even though I really think I do. I got depressed and started eating gluten again and guess what? Yep..Digestive distress again. Nothing closely resembling normal. Constant...distress.

SO guess who is going off gluten again regardless of what the Dr says? Yep. me. Today was day 1...again. It felt so good to just be "normal"

From what I've been told both by doctors and in school (I'm going back for nursing), floating stool means that there is an excess of fats in your stool. Since fat tries to separate from water, it floats to the top. It could either mean that you're not digesting properly or you are having too much fat in your diet. Hope that helps!

I think this is a for sure sign that I have been glutened. Since celiac is fat malabsorbtion, makes perfect sense!

If it is oily as well, or if it's floating D, then it's probably undigested fat.

If it's normal but just floating, it just has to do with your diet. Vegetarians have that problem iirc.

I was glutened last week and had D for several days. Now I just have cramping, floating stool and mucus discharge and gas with undigested food. I think the undigested food is what is causing the cramps. I really need to start being extra careful about gluten exposure. It's been a week and I still have cramps. I am growing very weary of celiac disease and all that comes with it. I miss the good ol' days of feeling great and eating on the run. :( :( :(

I put on over 12kg by eating protein with every meal, 3 to 5 times a day. Eggs, Chicken, Tuna, Turkey etc. I stay away from too much red meat as it can be inflammatory. Scott is correct. I've come across a bunch of Coeliac PT's on Tiktok and Instagram. They all say the same thing, the key is getting enough protein and consistency.

It's great to hear that eliminating gluten has helped alleviate symptoms like eye burning, which is a significant and positive change. The first and most important step is to ensure you're consuming enough protein throughout the day to support muscle repair and growth, which can be challenging with a busy schedule. Since you're already physically active at work, adding focused strength training just 2-3 times per week can make a major difference. Bodyweight exercises like squats, push-ups (modified if needed), and lunges, or using resistance bands at home, are excellent, efficient places to start. Remember, consistency with these short sessions and prioritizing post-workout recovery, including good sleep and hydration, are just as crucial as the workouts themselves. It's a smart, gradual process at any age.

Trader Joe's carries a good variety of affordable gluten-free foods like bagels, hamburger buns, pasta, etc. I like Franz Gluten Free bread, which is available at my local Costco. Food For Life and Little Northern Bakehouse (advertisers here) also make excellent gluten-free breads. Costco also sells gluten-free pizzas, crackers, gravy, etc.
