Hi I just discovered this site

How do you guys live the gluten free life? It's hard for me. I became a vegetarian at 12, and in November 2011 I found out I was gluten intolerant (I'm 14 now). It's not celiac, but just an intolerance.

I try not to make a big deal about it. Cross contamination doesn't bother me. Like if I consume a crumb of gluten it won't kill me. When I go out to eat (super difficult) I just get a salad and ask for it without croutons...

The problem is my family isn't supportive of it. My mom discourages me to be vegetarian. I cooking own meals...lentils, beans, nuts, dairy products, tofu (i make myself eat it). Now if I can find some gluten free mock meats that would be wonderful (all of them are stocked full of gluten). Plus my family doesn't eat gluten free..,or vegetarian. The ony gluten-free stuff they buy for me is oatmeal and granola/cereal (cause it's so expensive). I eat that stuff like its gold.

It's hard with parties and stuff too. People will have gluten free stuff for me. Or when I go to a friends house or pizza party, there's a gluten free pizza for me or they will have to make everything gluten free. I feel so bad. Anyone else feel this way?

Sorry for the rants.

Sage, don't every be sorry for the rants here. We get it. It's an allowed place for ranting okay? Well, it seems to me that when you go to parties or friends & they have these gluten free food stuffs for you that they are being very considerate & supportive of you! There are tons of folks on this board who would think they had died & gone to heaven to have ppl taking their dietary needs into consideration like that. Mostly we get ppl complaining that others don't understand their dietary needs & indeed make fun of them or try to get them to eat gluten. Honey, I surely wouldn't feel bad with friends like that. Tell them thank you! Yours is a generation anyway where lots of ppl your age & younger are having all kinds of different allergies, sensitivities to foods. They understand & it's not weird to them; certainly not like us old farts wink.gif & our generation.

I don't know of any gluten-free mock meats but I bet someone else on this board will have some suggestions for you.

Welcome to the board Sage! BTW, LOVE your name!

I strongly recommend 2 dedicated gluten free (gluten-free) restaurants in my area (East Bay of San Francisco Bay Area) (2025) -- Life is Sweet Bakery and Café in Danville. I've been a few times with friends and tried multiple entrees and salads. All very good and worth having again. I've also tried a number of their bakery goods. All extremely good (not just "good for gluten-free"). https://lifeissweetbakeryandcafe.com/ -- Kitara Kitchen in Albany (they have additional locations). I've been once and had the "Buritto Bowl". Six individual items plus a sauce. Outstanding. Not just "for gluten-free", but outstanding in its own right. Vibrant flavors, great textures. I can't wait to go back. https://www.kitava.com/location/kitava-albany/

I'm 67 and have been celiac for 17yrs. I had cataract surgery and they put a gluten lens in my eye. Through a lot of research, I found out about MMA acrylic...it contains gluten. It took 6 months for me to find a DR that would remove it and replace it with a gluten-free lens . I have lost some vision in that eye because of it . I also go to a prosthodontist instead of a regular dentist because they are specialized. He has made me a night guard and a few retainers with no issues... where my regular dentist didn't care. I have really bad reactions to gluten and I'm extremely sensitive, even to CC. I have done so much research on gluten-free issues because of these Drs that just don't care. Gluten is in almost everything shampoo, lotion, food, spices, acrylic, medication even communion wafers! All of my Drs know and believe me I remind them often.... welcome to my world!

If this applies geographically, in the U.K., physicians will often declare a diagnosis of celiac disease based on the TTG-IGA antibody blood test alone if the score is 10x normal or greater, which your score is. There is very little chance the endoscopy/biopsy will contradict the antibody blood test.
