Bard's Beer

Does anyone know if Bard's Beer is still around? I would love nothing more than to get ome gluten-free beer, but the closest place (according to their website) is in Vermont. That's 4 hours away at least. I haven't seen anything new on their website for months and the Internet wine and beer place show it continually out of stock. I certainly hope they are still around and doing well.

Your comments about them going out of business gave me a scare! I called the location in SC where I purchase my beer and they still carry it.

My outing for Bard's Tale is 300 miles or 6 hours so I do buy a case or two at a time. Since I do not drink it every day, it does last a bit. With the increase in gas prices, it has certainly made the trip more expensive.

The Whole Foods store I go to in Manhattan told me around 2 weeks ago that Bard's had a bad batch of beer so their shipments were being delayed. He did tell me to check back in 2 weeks when they expected a new shipment. I haven't made it over there yet to see.

I hope they are still around.

I hope they are still around!! I've sent a ouple of emails, but haven't had a reply. I'm just suprised that they aren't more vocal. Here's hoping they are still there!!

I'm afraid the bad batch has been a problem all along. I really want to see them succeed but I just had a bottle explode in the pantry and send glass all over. My mother had one explode about two weeks ago. I really don't want to give up my beer but this could be dangerous.

If they'd sell the malt, I'd just do it myself. :) They have a section for it on the website, but they don't seem to be selling it.

Ironically,

I had purchased a case of Bards when I was back in Ohio.

EVERY SINGLE bottle foamed up like crazy when I opened it -- I honestly got like half a beer out of each one -- disappointing!

My friend (non-celiac) bought a 6 pack because he liked the beer so much. He was giving his toddler a bath in the sink while he put one of the beers on the counter. It then exploded. The glass cut him, cut his wall, but luckily it missed his baby as he was sort of shielding her......

The company needs to explain what happened to their beer. I had a bad case of beer and at $40 a case, I am extremely angry. Add to that the story of my friend and it makes my blood boil.

I wrote them an e-mail and letter (as did he). If they do not respond ASAP, I advised him to pursue legal action -- this cannot be tolerated --- I can't believe they haven't responded yet....

Angry in Vegas.......

After talking to a friend of mine, I think the problem may be in the type of bottle/cap that they're using, which should be an easy fix. I'm curious to hear their reply, as I'm still finding glass all over the apartment. ;-)

I wrote concerning the foaming when I purchased my first case. I did send pictures. I had a phone call from one of the owners and an email from the other. No refund, no replacements, nothing. They claim it was mishandled by the distributor. I opened a warm bottle on Easter to use in a basting sauce and it spewed to the ceiling.

I like the beer but don't see myself driving 300 miles for another case. I had a 26 oz bag of gluten-free corn flakes on the shelf above which was ripped open. I drive 200 miles to purchase them. I'm sure I will be finding glass for some time to come.

After my husband cleaned up the pantry and put the remaining bottles in the fridge, another bottle exploded. I see real legal problems down the road. I would be afraid of someone getting hurt from this.

Wow...exploding beer. ... I love our forum

I did notice the extreme foaming on some of the Bards Tale Beer I've purchased. First time I thought maybe it was warm. Then I left one in the freezer and it was worse.

Never had one explode on me. I'm wondering if it may have to do with the fact that they were warm in your pantry.

The Whole Foods I purchased mine at specifically stated to keep the beer cold. I think it has something to do with the lack of pasteurization or something like that.

I have had conflicting information from the company itself concerning refrigeration. Most NC liquor stores are selling it off the shelf. My pantry is 75 degrees, not excessively warm, with an air conditioning vent.

I send my husband this thread because until recently, we were hoping to find some of this so I could drink beer with him (he has decided to quit drinking - today is day 10.... wow!!!!) and this was his response:

Try Hand Grenade Ale!

The beer that f***s you up whether you drink it or not!

We had a good laugh about it but I see legal issues in store for this, too. I wonder why this is happening? Foaming and making a mess is one thing, but exploding????

Hello,

Just an update. I went to my Whole Foods store in Manhattan and they told me another month before they get another shipment of Bards Tale.

I wonder if this delay has something to do with the exploding nature of their product. I hope they get it straightened out so we can enjoy beer again.

Wysz Newbie

I just purchased a case of Bard's Beer as a birthday gift for my father who has Celiac and hasn't had beer since he was diagnosed. I thought that this would be a great surprise, but I was surprised when two bottles (so far) exploded in my apartment, making a mess of glass and beer. I have the rest of them locked up in a cabinet, and I hear hissing, so I'm not going near it. They were sold off the shelf (unrefrigerated) so I didn't think it was necessary to keep them cool.

UPDATE:

I sent them an email the night of the explosions (3 occcurred before I got them into the dumpster) and one of the owners called me the next day. There has been a nationwide recall of the beer and I should not have been able to purchase it in the first place. Buffalo's city water, used during the production of the beer, had some contamination issues and caused problems with the beer. Rest assured that they are well aware of the problem and are switching to a different brewery. They expect to begin production again in 6-8 weeks. Frustrating now, I know, but it sounds like they are doing all they can to improve the situation.

I sell Bards beer online; and I want to disclose that fact prior to my comment.

I thought you would want to know the status of Bards Beer. The beer had a problem with secondary fermentation and all product was removed from stores in late July, This resulted in the exploding and excessively foamy beer. If you have any. please dispose of it. The expoding glass is hazardous.

I spoke with one of the owners last week (about Sept 26). I was told that they are moving production to 2 new breweries. Production should begin at one location very shortly and they hope to have beer flowing again in 6-8 weeks. Given the time frame, December is a good estimate when it should be available again.

No kidding on the dangerous exploding glass! (I posted a story about my experience with it last month. As of yesterday, I was still finding glass around the apartment! (The piece in the bed covers worried me most - and no, the beer never went in the bedroom.) I tried drinking the last bottle I had at my house cooling party (after wrapping it in towels and opening it *carefully* on the balcony), and the taste was alright, if you could get any in your mouth around the foaming problem. I look forward to seeing if I can find it in Washington around the holidays!

Guest BERNESES

Whoa! I've had some in my fridge since June and it hasn't exploded yet. Good Lord! Should I keep it since it seems to be OK or could this potentially be from the bad batches. I can't believe it exploded near a baby! Horrifying....

rmmadden Contributor

I was told by a manager at the Mustard Seed in Solon that Bard's recalled their beer because of over-fermentation which caused the bottles to explode.

He did show me a Chinese Black Rice Beer they carry which I bought and it was okay. It took a little getting used to but it was half the price of Bard's so I'll live with it.

yikes! we had problems with our beer foaming up...not exploding though. we keep all our bevs in a basement fridge. finally we figured out that the dryer's spin cycle was so powerful it was shaking our fridge nearby and shaking up all our drinks! it was funny b/c my bro gave my dh a case of international beers last year for christmas and b/c they would foam up and be flat we figured he had regifted the case from before to my hubby. good to know he didn't regift :)

What is the name of the Chinese beer?

rmmadden Contributor

The name of the beer is Yinpu. It is being imported into the Cleveland area and was even featured in an article printed in the Cleveland Plain Dealer. The article didn't mention anything associated with Celiac but the manager at the health food store where I shop is selling it as an alternative to Bards.

You can visit their website at www.yinpubeer.com

P.S. I drank a 6-pack of it over the weekend and no adverse effects (Hiccup!)

No date on this, but it looks to be the most recent thing I have read about Bard's beer. Back in March, with new varieties by summer and fall.

Hi all I’ve been celiac for 4 years now, I’ve done pretty well to avoid it thus far. Last night I took the wrong pizza out of the freezer and ate the whole lot!! The non gluten and gluten pizza boxes are both very similar.   2 hours later I was throwing up violently on my hands and knees over the loo.  .horrendous stomach pains,  My hair was wet from sweat every part of my body was wet. What an awful experience, just had a bad headache today  fortunately.    Is their any products/pills anyone takes if they have realised they have just been glutened to make the symptoms a little less worse.  thanks

Yes, do take your B Complex with Benfotiamine or Thiamax.  Thiamine interacts with each of the other B vitamins in the B Complex to make energy and enzymes, so best to take them together earlier in your day.  Taking them too close to bedtime can keep you too energetic to go to sleep.   The Life Extension Benfotiamine with Thiamine is Benfotiamine and Thiamine Hydrochloride, another form of thiamine the body likes.  The Thiamine HCl just helps the Benfotiamine work better.   Read the label for how many milligrams are in them.  The Mega Benfotiamine is 250 mgs.  Another Benfothiamine has 100 mgs.  You might want to start with the 100 mg.    I like to take Thiamax in the morning with a B Complex at breakfast.  I take the Benfotiamine with another meal.  You can take your multivitamin with Benfotiamine at lunch.   Add a magnesium supplement, too.  Thiamine needs magnesium to make some important enzymes.  Life Extension makes Neuro-Mag, Magnesium Threonate, which is really beneficial.  (Don't take Magnesium Oxide.  It's not absorbed well, instead it pulls water into the digestive tract and is used to relieve constipation.)  I'm not a big fan of multivitamins because they don't always dissolve well in our intestines, and give people a false sense of security.  (There's videos on how to test how well your multivitamin dissolves.).  Multivitamins don't prevent deficiencies and aren't strong enough to correct deficiencies.   I'm happy you are trying Thiamax and Benfotiamine!  Keep us posted on your progress!  I'm happy to answer any questions you may have.

I looked further into Thiamax Vitamin B1 by objective nutrients and read all the great reviews. I think I will give this a try. I noticed only possible side affect is possibly the first week so body adjusts. Life Extensions carries Benfotiamine with Thiamine and the mega one you mentioned. Not sure if both in one is better or seperate. some reviews state a laxative affect as side affect. SHould I take with my super B complex or just these 2 and multivitamin? I will do further research but I appreciate the wonderful explanation you provided on Thiamine.

There are other Celiac genes. HLA DQ 2 and HLA DQ 8 show up in people from Northern European descent.   People of Mediterranean descent have HLA DQ 7.  People of Asian descent have HLA DQ 9.   There's other Indigenous populations that have other HLA genes that code for Celiac disease.   Are you still having symptoms?   What do you include in your diet?  Are you vegetarian? Are you taking any prescription medication?  Omeprazole?  Metformin?   Do you have anemia?  Thyroid problems? Are you taking any vitamins or herbal supplements?
