I was in the Pharmacy today and saw a product called "Digestive Advantage" ... has anyone tried it? Does it work?

Thanks-

Kathy

Kathy:

What is it supposed to do? I was reading about a pill they are developing that is supposed to make us able to eat regular food. But I imagine it will be by prescription and I would be kind of afraid to try it. I am more worried about the long term effects to our bodies.

According to my search engine it is for lactose intolerance and IBS.

A glance at the ingredients list if you are near enough to study the packet may suggest how it works, if that information is matched to information about the effects the active ingredients have, from the internet, books, your practitioners and contributors to this site.

If it's of any help this is the procedure I went through to test for and treat lactose trouble:

First go 5 days without any dairy.

Then take butter for 5 days.

then 5 days without any dairy.

Then cream 5 days.

Then 5 days without any dairy.

Then live yoghurt.

The last two stages were cheese and neat milk respectively. 5 days each stage with 5 days in between dairy free.

My pattern was similar to quite a lot of people's : a reaction to neat milk and a lesser one to cheese, they are the strongest in lactose, butter for example has only a trace.

I think my lactose problem has cleared up but every now & again I have every other day dairy free, I use quinoa milk instead those days.

The significance of live yoghurt is that the live organisms turn the lactose into something else. They are also extremely good for one and almost all of us in societies like ours are very deficient in them causing any number of conditions & problems. In the UK very few yoghurt brands were found when tested, to have enough organisms to be worthwhile eating in terms of being "live" (plus, many brands don't claim to be live at all). If refined sugar is an added ingredient it negates the effect of the probiotics, the manufactureres hope that because we are "not better yet" we will keep buying it, plus we like sweet things of course ...

Some people make their own yoghurt, I've not tried this yet ...

Of course casein (protein) gives some people trouble when eating dairy ...

The Lindt (Lindor) dairy-free oat milk truffles are definitely gluten-free, and (last time I checked) so are the white chocolate truffles and the mint chocolate truffles.

I've used magnesium taurinate and magnesium taurate vitamins.  Didn't notice much of a difference when I used them.

More great tips, and a good excuse to shop at M&S and also buy more iced buns!   I wish we had an ASDA near us, as the few times we've been to one their gluten-free pasta range seemed very reasonably priced compared to other shops.  Thanks so much, @Russ H.
