Gluten Free For Two Weeks, Biopsy In Three Weeks

Mirjam Newbie

Hello,

I've been gluten free for two weeks now, after the doctor told me that I have celiac. Today they told me that they misread the results and that the bloodtest were not positive for celiac. He wants to do an endoscopy and take biopts. That will happen in three weeks. According to him I can stay on gluten free because the procedure is in three weeks, I read different stories online.

Any advice?

I have been gluten free for two weeks, if I stay gluten free I will be gluten free for 5 weeks before the biopsy. If I start eating gluten again I will eat gluten for 3 weeks, after a two week gluten free period.

Thanks,

Mirjam

First thing I would do is get a copy of those blood tests. Pretty odd that he "mis-read" them. Not sure if I would let him do the endo. But if you are going to let him do the endo, make sure he takes 6-8 biopsies of the small intestine (stomach & esophagus don't count). if it were me, I would eat some gluten everyday until then to make it more likely he will get a bad spot.

Hi Mirjam, if you do restart on the gluten, remember it doesn't take a lot.

I've been seeing studies on it for a while & here's a new one mentioned today in the forum's Publications Section.

Thank you both for your reply. I notice less bloating, close to normal stool, less pain in my stomach. I still have musle pains, extremely tired and pain just below my ribs. I'm sorry English is not my first language, so I hope you understand.

Do I understand it correct that you would advise to eat a small amount of gluten everyday until the day of the biopsy?

If it didn't cause an intolerable or even highly significant rise in symptoms, I suppose that's what I'd do, but I usually shy away from giving specific recommendations. I've seen occasional but rare posts of ppl affected longer term, after the challenge, who might regret doing it, but don't recall specifics of their early challenge symptoms.

Celiac testing is unfortunately still a bit of a crapshoot, but hopefully the forum has enough info for ppl in your position to make an informed decision & not only working off a Dr's (I don't mean yours specifically) outdated or misinformed info.

Thank you very much! I decided to start eating gluten until the biopsy. If I really get sick I will stop eating gluten.

Thanks again!

BTW, we've done other articles on this topic that I wanted to share here (not to condone smoking!):

Hi everyone  This has been a crazy year so far... How many people actually get entire sensory overload from gluten or something similar ?  My jaw is going nuts ..and that nerve is affecting my upper back and so on ...  Bones even hurt.  Brain fog. Etc  I had eggs seemed fine.   Then my aid cooked a chicken stir fry in the microwave because my food order shorted a couple key items .   I was so hungry but I noticed light breading and some ingredients with SOY !!! Why are we suffering with soy ? This triggered a sensitivity to bananas and gluten-free yogurt it seems like it's a cycle that it goes on.  The tiniest amount of something gets me I'm guessing the tiny bit of breading that I took one tiny nibble of ...yikes ..im cringing from it .. Feels like my stomach is going to explode yet still very hungry 😔  How long does this last?! Thank you so much

This is an older article, but may be helpful.

I have had orthodontic work done. The 3M invisalign material was no problem. BUT my retainers are another matter. They seemed okay for a few months. Now, however, they cause a burning sensation on my tongue, gums and insides of my lips. The burning sensation is now spreading to my throat. I notice it when I breathe. This is annoying and interferes with my enjoyment of eating. I am visiting with my provider tomorrow. We'll see where this goes from here.

Exactly which blood tests were done? There are a few different ones and some docs don't do them all. Also, your results and reference ranges for each?
