Motion Sickness - Feel Like I've Been Reading In The Car

For about 10 days, I've had an odd pressure, that is almost headachey, behind my face. My tummy has been a tiny bit off too; barely noticeable. It finally dawned on me the other day that I feel car sick, like I was trying to read in the car. It's like mild motion sickness (not as bad as I would get on a spinning ride though).

I'm guessing that it's somehow related to my hypothyroidism, which isn't optimally treated yet... In some ways celiac disease is easier because I have total control of my treatment and I don't have to wait for the idiot Doctor to get on board. I've also been a more fatigued than normal and am noticing the ringing in my ears more (don't think it's ringing more, just that I'm noticing it because of the car sick feeling behind my face).

I'm abit worried that I could be starting another autoimmune attack of some sort (which is fatigue, joint pain, hair loss) that crops up every few months. It could be hypothyroidism. It could be something else (I've been waiting 5 months for my idiot Doctor to get me into a rheumy now) but I don't know... I've had this symptom in the past but it usually lasts an hour or so, not 10+ days.

I am almost positive that I haven't glutened myself. 95% sure. I have been eating too much junk food and sugar as I finish off the Xmas treats, but they are gluten-free even if not healthy.

When I was diagnosed as a celiac 6 month ago, my vitamin levels were all normal to exceeding normal so I assume they are still all good... if not too good. ;) LOL The only thing that was on the low side of normal was D, but I've over tripled that supplement and take 2000-4000UI D3 sublingually per day.

Anyways, I wanted to know if any of you have experienced this on going motion sickness, and if so what caused it and what helped it?

Thanks for any ideas and advice. :)

Has the idiot Doctor proscribed you any thyroid medication yet, and if so, is it gluten free ? Are you taking any over the counter acid blockers like pepcid ? They have given me some strange side effects, which my eye doc finally figured out (!) because they can cause minute little quick changes in blood flow in the brain. Have you ever had ataxia, a neurological condition from nerve/brain damage, which is a balance/coordination problem, as a result of being glutened ? Are you good with all the ingredients in the sugary junk food ? What about soy ? What happens if you stop eating that ?

I am on 100mcg (gluten-free) synthroid at the moment, although 88mcg were prescribed. I upped my own dosage because my doctor said I'm now perfectly fine since my TSH hit the normal range (just below a 6). He said my continuing and unchanging hypo symptoms must be coincidence and from something else... no word on what that is though. LOL

I don't take any acid blockers... sounds like funky side effects you had on those... like something out of the mind altering labs they ran on college students in the sixties. Eek!

I have bad balance, which has grown worse with age, but I've no idea if it's gluten related. I just know that when I hike in the mountains, to stay a good 6 feet back from the cliffs unless I'm holding onto something. LOL I have nerve damage in one leg from a back injury so I'm rather uncoordinated now... but nothing that is new.

I can eat a surprising amount of sugary junk. I don't feel great afterwards but not horrible either. Lately it's been a handful of M&M's at bedtime; Xmas baking is eaten or tossed.

I don't eat much soy at all, negligable amounts really, although over the holidays I bought some soy based "egg nog" which was lovely in coffee; I was having between 1/4 to 1/2 cup per day... That could be something. I ran out of it this past week (after the car sickness began)... Hmmm, I'll keep an eye on that and consider it. I've never noticed a reaction to soy before, but then again, it took me over 35 years to clue into the fact that gluten made me feel poorly! LOL Thanks for the suggestion. :)

I had that happen once - for me, it was benign positional vertigo. I can't tell from what you describe as your symptoms if it fits here, but thought I'd mention it.

I had to look that one up. :) I've had that happen to me a few times a year since my childhood. It usually happens when I'm in bed, or laying down and lasts for about a minute. It felt like I rotated forward and was hanging off the ceiling. It never lasted long or had any side effects so I just enjoyed the sensation of hanging off the ceiling. LOL

I haven't had that for months so I doubt it's related... ya never know though.

Thanks. :)

Try, 'migraine associated vertigo'.

The research out there suggests that certain foods trigger it like msg (which is can be hidden under different names), caffeine, cheeses, nitrates, sulfites and so on.

I'm pretty sure I've had this!... Not lately but it sounds like me. Thankfully my migraines have almost completely disappeared after going gluten-free, and so has the dizziness.

Whay I have now is not really dizziness. It's more of a motion sickness thing with a tad of dizziness thrown in... I'm not doing a good job of describing it, but I doubt it's celiac related, I just wanted to double check and see if anyone else had experienced this. Thanks.

Is it possible you have an inner ear infection? I have known 2 adults with no ear pain but dizziness and light nausea & they found they had a pretty nasty inner ear infection.

Believe it or not, migraine associated vertigo also encompasses 'silent migraines' in which you don't feel the migraine but it manifests itself as vertigo/dizzy. Also, I'm assuming that when you say 'dizzy' you are meaning the feeling of the world or yourself moving, rocking and not the 'dizzy' feeling you get when you're ready to pass out from getting up too quickly or fainting.

I doubt it's an ear infection. I haven't been sick at all but if it turns into an infection, it is usually in my sinuses.

I've had auroas from migraines without the pain before too. My vision gets weirdly shaky at those times.

The dizziness I've had in the past is of the room spinning variety. I have had light headedness from getting up too fast (I have low blood pressure) but it's not related to this. Lately the dizziness is extremely mild. The world isn't spinning, I just feel a tiny bit less steady than normal. The "car sick" pressure behind my face is the main symptom, and it waxes and wanes throughout the day. I do notice it more when I'm looking up and down (like when typing).

It's still here, and really hasn't changed; it's no better or worse. Just mildly irritating. I'm stumped.

The discovery of the vitamin D receptor in multiple immune cell lineages, such as monocytes, dendritic cells, and activated T cells credits vitamin D with a novel role in modulating immunological functions and its subsequent role in the development or prevention of autoimmune diseases.  The Implication of Vitamin D and Autoimmunity: a Comprehensive Review

Definitely get vitamin D 25(OH)D.  Celiac Disease causes vitamin D deficiency and one of the functions of vitamin D is modulating the genes.  While we can survive with low vitamin D as an adaptation to living in a seasonal environment, the homeostasis is 200 nmol/L.  Vitamin D Receptors are found in nearly every cell with a nucleus, while the highest concentrations are in tissues like the intestine, kidney, parathyroid, and bone.  A cellular communication system, if you will. The vitamin D receptor: contemporary genomic approaches reveal new basic and translational insights  Possible Root Causes of Histamine Intolerance. "Low levels of certain nutrients like copper, Vitamins A, B6, and C can lead to histamine build up along with excess or deficient levels of iron. Iodine also plays a crucial role in histamine regulation."

I forgot to mention my suspicion of the high amount of glyphosate allowed to be used on wheat in USA and NZ and Australia. My weight was 69kg mid-2023, I went down to 60kg in March 2024 and now hover around 63kg (just after winter here in NZ) - wheat-free and very low alcohol consumption.

Hi Jess Thanks so much for your response and apologies for the long delay in answering. I think I must have been waiting for something to happen before I replied and unfortunately it fell off the radar... I have had an upper endoscopy and colonoscopy in the meantime (which revealed 'minor' issues only). Yes I do think histamine intolerance is one of the problems. I have been lowering my histamine intake and feeling a lot better. And I do think it is the liver which is giving the pain. I am currently taking zinc (I have had three low zinc tests now), magnesium, B complex, vitamin E and a calcium/Vitamin C mix. I consciously think about getting vitamin D outside. (Maybe I should have my vitamin D re-tested now...) I am still 100% gluten-free. My current thoughts on the cause of the problems is some, if not all, of the following: Genetically low zinc uptake, lack of vitamin D, wine drinking (alcohol/sulphites), covid, immune depletion, gastroparesis, dysbiosis, leaky gut, inability to process certain foods I am so much better than late 2023 so feel very positive 🙂

Hi and thank you very much for your detailed response! I am so glad that the protocol worked so well for you and helped you to get your health back on track. I've heard of it helping other people too. One question I have is how did you maintain your weight on this diet? I really rely on nuts and rice to keep me at a steady weight because I tend to lose weight quickly and am having a hard time envisioning how to make it work, especially when not being able to eat things like nuts and avocados. In case you have any input, woud be great to hear it! Friendly greetings.
