  1. I'd try eliminating caffeine. I found my energy levels improved when I stopped drinking coffee, tea and pop with caffeine...and reduced the amount of chocolate I eat (that was tougher to give up!) It had been affecting the quality of sleep, which affected my tiredness during the day.

I also found a boost of energy from iron supplements (my levels were just below normal) and making sure I get regular exercise. Most recently, I've found that Bikram Yoga has been really helpful for renewing my feeling of energy (I sleep really well after an evening class.)

  2. Hi everyone. I am pregnant and did the first trimester screening for down's syndrome. It came back as a positive screening - 1:200. I was wondering if this positive result could be conected to my celiac disease. I do happen to have a high ANA as well. Which is often connected to celiac disease. But i was thinking whether this too could have an effect on the result.

Did anyone with celiac disease get similar results...

I can't answer your question about the connection to celiac disease, but wanted to point out that the triple screen does have a fairly high rate of false positives. The numbers I have seen are between 19-24% of tests are falsely positive.

  3. After 2 years my iPod's not holding a charge at all anymore. :(

Is this about right for the lifespan of the battery??

Can another battery be purchased? Does it have to be sent to Apple for repair or do iPods just have short lives and its time for a new one?? <_<

    What should I do??

I would search the Open Original Shared Link and on Open Original Shared Link for others' experiences. Perhaps there is a precident for this particular issue where Apple will help out...or perhaps others may have info on after market products that work for replacing the battery.

  4. I had trouble choosing some pics...especially for art...I appreciated the art in all the images. Finally, it came up with this for me:

    Easy Rider

    Conqueror

    New Wave Puritan

    Love Bug

Don't think it was terribly accurate...and I don't get the Puritan thing...is it because my biggest Gross Out was smoking? Otherwise, I'm pretty much as far from puritan as possible. :P

  5. The best source of vitamins and minerals will always be from our food. I think it is wise to supplement with vitamins that may be deficient in the diet, especially folic acid. There is just way too much science pointing to the necessity of folic acid for proper fetal development, plus it's recently been discovered that proper levels during pregnancy reduces the risk of developing childhood cancers.

  6. I actually had liked all of Haley's previous performances. Last night she really fell. I did like Jordyn though. The girls seem to be powerhouses. This is a real fun thread. I am glad to see it took off. Boy Antonella seems to have gotten a high horse too...when Ryan talks to her after she performs her responses always annoy me.

Antonella doesn't have anywhere near the talent of the other girls. She's always off key and has a weak voice...I was really surprised when she made it to the final 24 in the first place. My guess is it's strictly about her looks. She shouldn't make it through tonight...I don't think Haley deserves to continue on either.

  7. Hi All,

I finally signed on after reading this message board for over a week.

My husband was diagnosed with Cronh's Disease after spending 5 days in the hospital last month.

We went back for the follow-up and was told he also has Celiac Disease.

This message board has helped soooo much.

I decided to post today because we are going Thursday to see a Dietitian. I thought it would really help us but after reading the comments today, I am not sure. His G. I. office made the appointment and no, we have not researched the Dietitian.

We are a little overwhelmed with all of this. I had never heard of it until last month but he had researched his symptoms and was not surprised.

This may should be under another topic but my big question is...What do you do when you have an attack?

He has meds for D (also on Entocort and Nexium) but is there anything that stops the pain?

    Thanks.

Hi Frogster, and welcome. Please post this as a new thread (if you haven't done so already)...you will get more/better response to your questions.

    Michelle :)

  8. I'm guessing that there is an archival area of old threads and posts here. Is this so? Is it it possible for me to search them for information rather than bore everyone by asking what must be the same questions for the millionth time?

    Ta.

    Marcus.

There is a search feature in the menu items. You can do an advanced search with specific parameters.

  9. I was one of those kids who couldn't eat beakfast. If I did I hurled it back up within the hour. Even to this day I have to be up for at least an hour or two before I can eat.

My suggestion is give him a glass of carnation instant breakfast along with his fruit. It has plenty of nutrients in it and if you get the chocolate it taste like chocolate milk. That's what my mom did, and it worked great.

    -Laurie

I'm an adult that doesn't/can't eat breakfast...and didn't eat much breakfast as a kid either. I'm just not hungry first thing in the morning (I think it has to do with me being such a night owl) and, if I do eat, the most I'll have is a bowl of yogurt with ground flax seed. Usually I will eat a few hours after I get up, and, on the days I exercise, I eat afterwards not before.

  10. Ds is not on a gluten free diet but we eat alot of the same foods. He's an only child and poor kid can't get through a whole box of cereal all by himself without getting sick of it. He won't eat anything I offer for breakfast lately. Just wants fruit, which is fine but I want him to have more than that. They don't get adequate time to eat lunch at school and he's starving by the time he gets home. We have Pamela's waffles every Saturday so he doesn't want that during the week. I don't want him to be eating sugary cereal or other sugary processed foods all the time. He doesn't like eggs. I don't mind buying nonGF bread but that gets old and isn't very nutritious. We used to eat apple crisp for breakfast sometimes but I'm not ready to try gluten-free oats yet. He has occasionally eaten yogurt but doesn't want that most of the time. He's 8 and has always liked a wide variety but is getting stuck in a rut lately.

    Any ideas?

What about lunch for breakfast? A sandwich, pizza, pasta...no reason you have to have breakfast-type foods in the morning!

Can your son have a snack during recess? I always pack enough for my kids to have a snack at each recess plus a good-sized lunch. Sometimes they bring snacks home that they couldn't finish...so I know they aren't going hungry during the day.

  11. Just a thought...

It's impossible to tell if and how many times a post has been reported...so this could mean that a post gets reported more times than necessary. Is there a way (a program setting of some sort) to show that a report has already been sent in by one (or more) people?

    Michelle

  12. ok, I need some help. I need a good prenatal vitamin that is gluten free but I haven't found one yet. What do you all take? Thanks

I didn't take prenatal vitamins. They can actually contribute to pregnancy nausea for some women...and I was one of the lucky ones with nausea for the first three months. :) I did take folic acid supplements though...along with a healthy, vitamin rich diet.

  13. I was reading up on tapioca since I've been using it alot in my new bread recipe. Apparently in Taiwan, a drink called bubble tea is all the rage. I think you can order it in your bigger cities here in the states and I was wondering if anyone has tried it. It does look good! Kinda funny :P I want to make it now. It has the little tapioca balls that sink to the bottom of the cup (served in a clear plastic cup). Like I need another reason to eat more tapioca. ;)

    Gail

There are a lot of places that sell it in Vancouver, BC...and it seems to be quite popular. It comes in all sorts of flavours too. I've tried it, and am not a big fan...though I do really like tapioca pudding...just not crazy about big pieces of tapioca. :)

  14. my stools float all the time but only really started after taking milk of magnesia. They don't smell like stool either. THey smell rancid or something. I haven't been eating gluten for about 4 months either. I don't know why this is. I have chronic yeast though. THe slightess amount of sugar gives me discharge. Could It be leaky gut? I'm so fustrated and worried about all this. And I don't feel better being off gluten. I can't even smell chemicals or artificial sweeteners without discharge. ugh

For women, having discharge doesn't necessarily mean yeast. Some discharge during the month is normal, even discharge everyday can be normal...and the type of discharge changes throughout the month. Depends on your body and your cycle. Do no assume it is yeast or treat for it unless it's been confirmed by your doctor. Abnormal discharge can be due to bacterial infection or yeast overgrowth.

  15. So, how does he know he's going to get sick next week???

She is sick now. She thought she'd be better, but she isn't recovering as quickly as she hoped, and needs to take the next week too. I didn't ask what she was sick with...heck, it could be a last minute vacation for all I know! Still glad I'm not one of the people who would have gotten a last minute cancellation!

    Michelle

  16. I've only been waiting 6 months for this darned test. The dr had the nerve to get sick!

Have no idea how long I'll be waiting to reschedule. The nurse/receptionist said she'll call when they've figured out when. At least they called a week ahead...could've been at the last minute...like after I started my prep! ;)

  17. I believe the feeling of a lump in the throat can be from a number of health issues. Reflux is a common one, as well as thyroid issues.

I have a lump in my throat occassionally...seems to coincide with stress. Last June I had it linger for a month. I've since found out that I have a hiatal hernia and likely reflux because of it...though not bad enough to warrant meds yet.

It would be worth talking to your doctor about it & get it checked out.

    Michelle

  18. OMG!!! I didn't know iodine was a problem! Sorry you had such a bad reaction. My skin itches for you! Thanks for the heads up. You have probably saved me months of missery and lots of money! I agree with you about the medical bracelet. Just wish they were more stylish. I know style shouldn't matter when it comes to such an important issue, but I am vain.

MedicAlert has a lot of styles to choose from: bracelets, watches, necklaces and sports bands.

I have not gotten a diagnosis of celiac or DH...don't know if I actually ever will. I did react to something after my second cesarean section though. Got blisters around the incision, underneath the adhesive tape. I originally thought it was a reaction to the adhesive (I don't typically react with blisters though), but wonder if it was actually from the Betadine. That stuff takes a while to wear off your skin...not surprising it would cause a significant reaction to someone who is sensitive.

    Michelle

  19. Yeah, that makes sense on some level. But if that's the case - that it can be natural - then why, when you do a search on it, does it always talk about it appearing during pregnancy and going away after?

I read that it can also be related to adrenal insufficiency... don't know what to think.

    Thanks for the post.

Because "they" always talk about averages. There will always be people that experience things differently. Some people simply have darker pigmentation, and the way that their skin appears will change over time. "Age spots" are one example.

If you are concerned, go to your doctor to get it checked out. Have blood work done to rule out hormone issues, vitamin/mineral deficiencies, etc.

    Michelle

  20. It may just be the way your skin colouring is, and likely nothing to be concerned about. The wikipedia page suggests that increasing folic acid intake may decrease it: Open Original Shared Link

When I'm pregnant, my linea negra extends from the bottom of my ribs to below my belly button...my skin has a tendency to darken where I have scars or injuries as well...and takes a long time to fade away.

  21. My son is almost 7 months old, and this is what I'm doing: first off - NO cereals at all - they're not a necessary part of the diet. I started solids the day before he turned 6 months (which was a Sunday). His first foods were banana and avocado. I'm going by that list that somebody else posted (the Hall publications one). And I'm also waiting a full 7 days rather than the "usual" 4. I'm starting new foods in the mornings to watch for any reactions - I don't want to deal with a food reaction at 2 am if I can help it. Also, until a baby is about 6 months old their gut is still immature and "open" - which raises their risk of food allergies even more, as well as intestinal irritation. I'm just making my own foods so far too - it's really easy and I know for sure what's in it (the fruit/veggie and maybe a little water to thin it out if needed).

Making your own baby food is great...and easy. I used to cook food (using organic where I could), process them with my Moulinex food grinder and then freeze it in ice cube trays. It's the perfect serving size and quick to reheat. For the very first foods, I'd use breastmilk to thin them out.

For an older baby I had a book with some really good baby food recipes: The Baby Cookbook by Karin Knight, RN and Jeannie Lumley. There were a quite a few tasty combinations with bite sizes foods. One favourite for my eldest was green beans with carrot and apple. :)

  22. I have your symptoms exactly. (itchy like dry skin but no rash etc. comes and goes) Mine also started a couple of months ago. (must be the water in Virginia). We are in the process of experementing with different laundry products. I actually bought some Tide a while back when we could not get Arm and Hammer. Right now we are going to try All free and clear and see what happens. Will post results.

    Tom

I think the water could very well be a culprit too. Sometimes I suspect it's the water here that troubles my skin more than soaps or detergents...especially when I have no issue with my soap (for sensitive skin) for long stretches of time, then, all of a sudden, my skin will be burning and itching.

Seems to be a cyclical thing. I wonder if it's a combination of winter dryness and levels of chloramine and/or trace minerals & chemicals in the water...the levels do change throughout the year. Chloramine (chlorine & ammonia) also doesn't dissipate from the water with aeration like chlorine does, and I know I'm very sensitive to chlorine on my skin. I won't drink the tap water anymore either because of the chloramine.
