ARCHIVED Ridiculous Comments From Doctors Heard During Search For Diagnosis
Gemini replied to Sierra's Mommy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
The line that got me was the idiotic remark about not wanting to have celiac disease because the diet is terrible and expensive. First off, I HIGHLY doubt that most of the medical profession even come close to eating as well as I do. Meaning healthy and a diet which satisfies any craving I might have for whatever I ate pre-dx. Yes, it is expensive to eat... -
Whom are you referring to? I thought larry and I had a valid response and were not rude or quarrelsome with anyone. It is perfectly acceptable to postpone jury service because of ill health at the time of the report date. The first summons I got I did just that because I had so many doctor's appointments due to the recovery phase of Celiac. Maybe I should...

I had the same thoughts myself and I'm not trying to be rude but, unless you are in an active and irreversible state of Celiac Disease, there should be no reason to be excused from jury duty just because you have celiac disease. I took my own lunch last year when I served, had no trouble with the breaks that were allowed (they do not make a jury sit for hours...

ARCHIVED Want Formal Diagnosis
Gemini replied to SaraKOB's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You could always have the gene testing done on yourself to see if you carry the main Celiac gene. It will not tell you if you have Celiac but if you carry the gene, you will have the genetic pre-disposition for it. Add to that your symptoms and dietary response and that's as good a diagnosis as what the medical profession currently offers.....probably better... -

ARCHIVED Review Of: Valencia Orange Cake From Starbucks
Gemini replied to angel-jd1's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
It depends....there are many complaints from recovered Celiacs about gaining too much weight and there's only one way to do that....by eating too many calories. I always think I am blessed that I cannot eat the majority of mainstream food that most of America likes to consume. It's an easy way to maintain your weight. While occasional snacks like this are... -
ARCHIVED How Long Until The Ttg Numbers Drop?
Gemini replied to angelhair45's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
What is confusing me a bit is the fact that the EMA test is not a test used for monitoring possible gluten consumption in a Celiac. It is either a positive or negative result and is used solely for diagnosis of Celiac Disease. It is a very specific test and a positive pretty much is a slam dunk for celiac disease, along with a positive tTg. The above... -
ARCHIVED How Long Until The Ttg Numbers Drop?
Gemini replied to angelhair45's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
That explains it then! I believe Type 1 diabetes will also elevate tTg levels but you can google it and see if I have that correct. There were a number of them listed and, as your son has 2 autoimmune problems, it is no small wonder he is still elevated after only 3 1/2 months. See, your intuition is talking to you about this doctor and the reality of recovery... -
ARCHIVED How Long Until The Ttg Numbers Drop?
Gemini replied to angelhair45's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
There are other reasons why tTg numbers do not fall quickly. The other possibility is that your son may have one of the other autoimmune problems that often go in tandem with having Celiac Disease. Hashimoto's thyroid is one of them and can cause elevated tTg levels. What were the results of his AGA IgA and IgG repeat testing or did the doctor only repeat... -
ARCHIVED Review Of: Valencia Orange Cake From Starbucks
Gemini replied to angel-jd1's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Any and all gluten-free baked goods dry our very, very quickly and add to that most do not add all those crappy preservatives and chemicals to keep them artificially fresh. Unless something will be eaten in it's entirety in 24 hours, I store everything well wrapped in the fridge. keeps much longer that way. Gluten eaters do not know this! -
You're welcome!

ARCHIVED Review Of: Valencia Orange Cake From Starbucks
Gemini replied to angel-jd1's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
So...between this cake and a hot, blended coffee or tea, we're looking at a 500 calorie snack?!?! Yikes! I applaud them for making this effort but it's doubtful I will try one out. I usually get the Chai latte's and that contains honey and is sweet so that satisfies my sweet tooth. I also give them credit for packaging them separately as I wouldn't... -
Healing absolutely does occur, if you are good about sticking to the diet. Cheating will only hinder recovery time or may make it impossible to achieve if it's consistent. Time required really varies greatly from person to person. It took me about 3 1/2 years before all my symptoms resolved and my many vitamin deficiencies reversed themselves. I was 46 at...

ARCHIVED Really Hacked Off At Kinnikinnick Foods.
Gemini replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
WOW! You thought that was a rude statement?!?!? I realize you were in a rant but when you put your rant out in a public place, expect some feed back! I used to be a size 2...when I was malnourished and wasting away from celiac disease. Now I am a "fat" size 4-6, which is much healthier for my 5'4" frame. I also do not worry about the weight gain... -
ARCHIVED Blood Test Results
Gemini replied to Peach's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Peach.....any doctor that says you will have to be on medication for diarrhea for the rest of your life ought to have his medical license suspended! Also, you cannot diagnose celiac disease through a colonoscopy but it's always the first thing they want to do. I am surprised he has refused the endo with all your symptoms and dietary response but that... -
ARCHIVED Drinking With Celiac Disease
Gemini replied to LandonL's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Yellow Tail red wines are absolutely, unequivocably gluten free. So are the vast majority of wines out there. I don't know why people have a hard time with this one. My husband and I drink Yellow Tail quite often, meaning every week, and I have never had any problems whatsoever with it. I was end stage, life threatening ill at the time of diagnosis and would... -
ARCHIVED Very Encouraged
Gemini replied to Ems1984's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Em.........you have an incredibly good attitude about all this and deserve a gold star for your efforts! I operate the same way as you.....I view the diet as a challenge and have totally enjoyed cooking gluten-free and learning new methods. My health has never been better and that's my reward. It's nice to hear from those who have risen to the occasion... -
ARCHIVED Swine Flu & Celiac
Gemini replied to foodiegurl's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
Absolutely NO ONE on this thread is being attacked by anyone and if people still want to give an opinion, it would be welcomed. Whenever someone doesn't like what is being said, you start hearing the violins and suggestions to march on. I made a response because I firmly believe the media is blowing this totally out of proportion...as they always do. We have... -
ARCHIVED Swine Flu & Celiac
Gemini replied to foodiegurl's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I have read up on the flu and am very informed. PBS did a program a few years back on the flu outbreak in 1918 and it was extremely amazing to see. However, there are huge differences in what occurred then and what is occurring now. In 1918, there were no vaccinations and no antibiotics. People died from secondary infections, mainly pneumonia which set in... -
ARCHIVED I'm Planning My Cheat Day
Gemini replied to Blessings's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Ummmm....what a shame that your consider this a ridiculous diet! I know it was a life saver for me and I eat better, with more variety, than most people I know. I never miss anything I used to eat but I also was not heavily into fast food before I was diagnosed so there are very few foods I actually "miss". I could understand feeling the way you do... -
ARCHIVED All Inclusive Holidays Abroad
Gemini replied to Miss Abi's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I have been struggling with this dilemma for awhile. How to travel to less mainstream countries and not get sick! One thing I do know is that I would NEVER do an all-inclusive that was not gluten free based. I never eat at buffets unless I am the first or second one to open the place and generally only do salad bars and not cooked food buffets. The... -
ARCHIVED Swine Flu & Celiac
Gemini replied to foodiegurl's topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
People with Celiac Disease do not have compromised immune systems...they have overactive immune systems. A compromised immune system would fall into the category of HIV or people taking steroids or medications that make them weaker or less responsive to infection. The whole goal of going gluten-free is to calm our immune system down so it won't recognize... -
I understood completely what you said but I still totally disagree with the idea that you cannot build bone without a gym membership. If osteopenia is caused by malabsorption and this condition is totally reversed with a gluten-free diet, then a combo of good supplements (preferably RX strength calcium), along with Vit. D and magnesium PLUS bio-identical...

ARCHIVED What Is With All The "look Out For Gluten In ~ Insert Toiletry Item~"
Gemini replied to mattathayde's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
matt......you have been doing your homework! This issue has been discussed over and over and what it really boils down to is personal preference. You are correct, there are many toiletries and toothpastes that do not contain any gluten so the threat is not as profound as many might think. There is also the issue that many people have a wheat allergy on top...
