  1. I agree with everyone else, but I wanted to chime in to say that with this sort of history you should go straight to the ER in any case of accidental gluten. Even if he doesn't react, you can hang out in the waiting room for awhile. You'll feel safer and be in the right place if a severe reaction occurs.
  2. My daughter had a bit of constipation-nothing I was overly concerned about but it was always a bit difficult for her to pass. She was also fairly lathargic-at 8 months she still took 4 naps a day. Her main symptom, the one that prompted her ped to run tests, was failure to thrive. She was 14lb 4oz at 10 months when we started testing for celiac. At her...
  3. Gerber wagon wheels were not gluten free when I checked them a few months ago. There was wheat starch in the ones we used to buy. Gerber now has freeze dried fruits-bananas, pineapple, strawberry and apple. A favorite here is Healthy Times Teddy Puffs, but they have oats in them so it depends on how yours does with those.
  4. DD was tested last week via skin prick testing. She was negative for all foods. Her allergy/immunology specialist said to keep her off the ones that are causing problems-currently wheat, corn, beef, chicken, and milk-until she is more stable. Then try reintroducing them to see how she reacts. She hasn't had milk for 10 months so I may consider challenging...
  5. I bought a CBK cake mix for my DD's 1st birthday. I was so excited to find one labeled wheat-free, dairy-free and corn free, but I see it has xanthum gum as an ingredient. Isn't that derived from corn and will my apparently corn-allergic child have problems with this cake? I so want her to have cake on her birthday like her sisters had, but not if she...
  6. I have always used oats in both meatballs and meatloaf, but I know a lot of celiacs have difficulty with that. We are lucky enough that DD seems to handle them well.
  7. Oops, I forgot to mention is also allergic to dairy so she's not going to get protein from milk or cheese. I appreciate all the suggestions so far! I'm hoping she comes up negative to eggs so we can go that route. She's never had anything with egg in it so I don't know if she'd react. It's not one I'm willing to try, of course, until after her allergy...
  8. DD will be tested this Thursday, but for now I'm getting concerned about variety in her diet. She's almost 1 and I feel I should be adding protein to her diet. However she has reacted to both chicken and beef. With fish, eggs and peanuts being high allergens I'm afraid to even try introducing them this young. Any ideas on how to get protein in her?
  9. Yes, even a little bit of gluten can cause prevent progress, cause damage, etc. I have read in my research that for some hypersensitive celiacs even a speck of gluten can cause as much damage as eating a pizza. Luckily for us, DD's diet didn't contain a lot of gluten to begin with so cutting it out was easy. I'm just amazed at how much has improved from...
  10. I don't have any answers for you, but I would recommend finding a pediatric dentist in your area. Our ped recommended one when my oldest was 3, and he's been wonderful. He is good with kids (obviously) and specializes in issues with baby teeth. He was very proactive about some issues with her baby teeth that could have affected her permanent teeth, something...
  11. If he is really missing peanut butter, there are alternatives out there for his old favorites. You can buy soynut butter, if soy is one he can tolerate. Also, our school serves sunbutter sandwiches, but I don't know where you can find the butter made from sunflower seeds instead of peanuts. ETA: You can buy it on Amazon, so I'm sure it is available at...
  12. Thanks so much for all the info! It helps to hear from someone who's been there. She'll be 1 in two weeks so I'm glad we are finding all this early. I think the suspense is killing me the most. We already avoid most things we suspect, but I really want to know what she actually can eat.
  13. I'm not sure what exactly they are planning. Her doc has mentioned both skin prick and RAST, maybe they are planning both? The letter from the med center said "plan to spend several hours with us" so I'm assuming it's much more than a blood draw.
  14. I have been shopping Wild Oats because it is right down the street, but it's quite expensive. I have also recently found a decent gluten free section at Meijer, which helps. I have heard Trader Joe's sells many of the same things as Wild Oats at a lower price. There is one about 25 minutes from here, so not too out of the way if the deals are worth it...
  15. We have DD's allergy/immunology appointment next week. I'd love to hear experiences from others on what to expect, what I should ask, etc. I also don't know what all they will be testing for or what I should request. We suspect problems (though not necessarily allergy...) with corn, beef, chicken, strawberries and oranges. I just don't know how it works...
  16. The oil for the french fries contains hydrolyzed milk and wheat ingredients. It is a very small amount, but it's in the oil so it could be in your fries.
  17. We are doing a reverse candy store on November 1st this year. They get to buy cheap toys from me (mostly things I've picked up on Target clearance) by paying with their candy.
  18. Well, I didn't even think about the oats. We are lucky enough to not have that problem here. What about rice crackers from the Asian food section? The ingredients for most of those are very basic-rice flour, some type of oil (the ones I buy use sunflower), and salt.
  19. My DD loves Open Original Shared Link! They are teddy bear shaped puffs that are wheat free, dairy free, and soy free. Perhaps she would like those. She eats both original and apple cinnamon. I have found them at Wild Oats and Meijer. I hope you find some answers soon!
  20. What about Neutramigen or Allementum? I can't remember what those were made of, but we were going to try that thinking it might be her formula before her ped mentioned celiac. She can tolerate the soy just fine now that she is off gluten so we didn't have to go that route. I'm not sure what is in the hypoallergenic formulas, maybe someone here knows if...
  21. Wow, Suzie. I had never given any thought to my own intolerances. I have stopped eating what (for the most part) and she is doing so much better. (She's gained 2 lbs in the 7 weeks since diagnosis-we're back on the growth chart!) When I cheat, she tattles on me 24 hours later. I used to slip in a piece of pizza or cheeseburger now and then, but since...
  22. I posted this question a few weeks ago after my breastfed baby was diagnosed celiac. I ignored most of the advice, but if I had a "heavy" wheat day I could see a difference in her behavior and diapers. I have been virtually wheat free for weeks no. I say virtually because I haven't messed with hidden gluten in my own lifestyle. If I cheat (and, yes, sometimes...
  23. Agreeing with everything already said. There is evidence to suggest some celiacs undergo a "remission" where their bodies to not visibly react to gluten, but you could still be doing internal damage. If you are indeed celiac, it means a lifelong adherence to a gluten free diet.
  24. I took DD to the doctor today as she's been sick. Turns out she has an ear infection. The visit, of course, included a weight check and I am so excited! She is 11 months old and now weights 16lbs. 9oz.-up 2 pounds since going gluten free two months ago! She now ranks around 7th percentile on the growth chart, when she's spent a bit of time in the...
  25. This happened with my DD, who is 10 months. She used to take several naps each day. Now she's down to 1 and gets up a bit earlier every day. It is because she is now absorbing the nutrients she needs and has the calories/energy to get through the day without all the extra sleep.
