  1. DD keeps a couple different things in a cubby at her school-Envirokidz chocolate cereal bars for sweet treat days and Fritos for any savory treat days. This way she gets to eat a treat of somewhat similar style to the other kids.
  2. I have been pretty generous with treats while making the adjustment. In fact, I bought chocolate cereal for the first time ever just to prove to my girls that there are good foods they can still eat! Providing lots of gluten free options really helps-the pantry is well stocked with Envirokidz bars, gluten free chips (Cheetos & Fritos are a favorite...
  3. Mi-Del makes a good gluten-free animal cookie. I can't seem to keep DH out of them, and he's the only one who doesn't need the gluten free diet!
  4. I used the all-purpose bread mix to make pigs in a blanket for Christmas morning and we loved it-even my non-gluten free hubby. The girls really like the frozen rolls, but I haven't tried to make anything else with Chebe yet. I did buy another bag of mix to make hot dog buns this weekend so we'll see how they turn out.
  5. We cleared the pantry of all gluten foods. We were mostly all gluten free anyway as it's just easier to cook one meal each night. There is one cabinet that has some gluten snacks for DH and I. It hasn't been an issue since they know there are safe snacks in the pantry, but if they were still getting into the off limits pantry I would put a lock on it like...
  6. Our school did this during testing too, but they specified healthy snacks! They had things like granola bars, raisins, fruit and trail mix-all of which would be easy to make gluten free! The kids loved having a treat during the test period, but it was something good for them rather than junk that will do nothing to benefit their bodies or their minds. ...
  7. I am a scout leader. The first thing you need to do is contact whoever is running the event and get the menu. Let them know of your daughter's restrictions. Often, if you tell them before hand they can make different choices. For example, we didn't find out about a peanut allergy until the day she arrived-we would have chosen a snack other than ants on...
  8. Fruity Pebbles and Cocoa Pebbles by Post are gluten free. Cocoa Puffs by General Mills now have wheat starch, though I found the 70% less sugar variety on clearance and scoured the label 5 times-it appears to be the old gluten free formula. We cleared the store shelf! I never used to allow chocolate for breakfast, but it has been a nice treat during the...
  9. I am having issues with my parents too. I skipped the biopsy and went straight to the diet with my youngest (with the doctor's recommendation, btw) and she is doing so great! When I started seeing signs in my older 2 we skipped the diagnostic stage altogether and went with dietary response. They did great, but my parents think it's okay "just this one...
  10. My youngest DD actually spit these out-she'd never done that with anything in her life! The older two will actually eat them as long as they are well covered in syrup, but then again I'm sure they actually would eat syrup-covered cardboard.
  11. My DD was also sad and disappointed when we started the diet-for about a week. Then she realized how great she felt! We didn't have any testing done at all-the diagnosis of our youngest coupled with the issues we realized could be symptoms were all we needed to give it a try. We are using dietary response by using 3 gluten challenges. We have done 2 so...
  12. My older girls are new to the gluten free diet and disappointed that they can't have Grandma's pancakes or French toast this weekend when they visit. Is there a good baking mix or pancake mix I can pickup for her to use? I was looking at Namaste, but am open to any suggestions.
  13. I'm assuming you have family history to suggest celiac. In that case, I'd simply tell the doctor that with your family history and some issues you are noticing you'd like to have him tested. You can just describe what you are seeing and mention that even though you aren't seeing "traditional" gastro symptoms, you really feel this is indicative of celiac...
  14. We are trying to broaden our horizons beyond Wendy's, but SnS doesn't appear to be very forthcoming with their allergens. The site just lists "possible food allergens" and has wheat listed on pretty much everything. Has anyone successfully eaten anything here?
  15. DD is going to a friend's birthday this weekend for an overnight. She's already going to miss out on the pizza that night so I asked her mom if there was any way I could help. She's getting an ice cream cake from DQ and was planning to make a regular chocolate cake as well. I volunteered to do it so DD could have some since I would have to make some sort...
  16. DD (15 months) had the same problem as the above poster. She got better and then she got worse. We started eliminating foods and discovered soy to be the culprit also. Now she's perfectly healthy and normal, though missing her favorite cookies. She's gluten free and soy free, but tested negative for food allergies. I'm hoping it's more an issue of her...
  17. Congrats on finding the solution to your little one's problems. Constant hunger is my middle child's prominent symptom. I didn't think much of it until she went gluten free and suddenly ate a normal amount of meals. Now when she get accidentally glutened she can't seem to stop eating the entire next day.
  18. I feel you! With DD I half wanted it to be negative and half wanted it to be positive just so we would know! I'm sometimes sad for her and the things she will never get to have, but now that she's healthy I can't really argue that I wish that hadn't happened!
  19. I have not yet used this particular brownie mix, but I have substituted applesauce for oil in many other recipes. It works pretty well for baking mixes. My DD is also soy free so I just bought canola oil for use in bread mixes.
  20. My youngest is the one with the diagnosis, but since researching the disease we learned a lot of the symptoms describe issues our children have had all their lives. The older two didn't have the obvious gastro issues that people think of when they hear celiac and they are actually ahead on the growth chart, bu they used to eat constantly! I know lots of...
  21. My DD was a failure to thrive baby-which is what led her doc to celiac in the first place. She had dipped all the way to the bottom margin at 9 months (from 50% at 4 months when the weight dip began), prompting all the tests. She went gluten free at 9.5 months and gained 5 ounces in the first 5 days (quite a bit for a 15 lb baby). At 10 months she had...
  22. There are over 200 signs and symptoms of celiac disease. I have yet to find a list that even comes close to naming them all. That's why it is so hard to miss and why doctor's think it can't be celiac because you don't have a handful of symptoms traditionally thought to indicate celiac.
  23. After our youngest DD's diagnosis I read about others here who had behavior issues with gluten. We'd dealt with behavior and anger issues for many, many years ending up at a psychologist once who told us DD had "excess energy" and needed more activity. We took the other 2 off gluten and within days they were so much better. We had the most peaceful calm...
  24. General Mills also makes a Neopets Islandberry Crunch cereal which is gluten free. It is also listed as whole grain, but the grain is corn and rice. I would venture a guess that this cereal is similar to the Neopets and would be gluten free.
  25. When DD was first diagnosed, she was tired all the time (she took 4 naps a day at 9 months!) and had mild constipation. After a month gluten free she would get D 24 hours after an accidental exposure. Now, it goes back and forth from D to C. It's very weird to me. Now that I'm not nursing, the accidental exposures are fewer and far between. I'm sure...
