Thanks Patti,Laura and D. I work hard at getting other docs to consider celiac sprue.....bend their ears quite a bit. I found out the most recent GI Boards had many,many questions re:celiac....so if the new GI's weren't too knowledgable before...guess they will be soon! I think around here they know it is a real diagnosis, but it is really hard to pin it...

If capsule endoscopy is available in your area, it may give your son a diagnosis. It is a small camera that is swallowed and makes photographs as it passes through the small intestine. It can be diagnostic for celiac as well as other small intestinal disorders. Good luck.

Yes, I have it,too and I'm also an MD. I found out 3 1/2 years ago after an EGD for ferritin deficiency. The duodenum was normal to the naked eye, and I was very surprised to get my diagnosis. Back then, it was just being known to be 1 in 133 Americans, not the 1 in 5000 just a few years before! I had been having intermittent gut problems for about 2 years...

Peta, It is entirely possible to have negative blood tests for antibodies, and still have celiac disease. There are several triggers including viral illness and stress which spur the autoimmune reaction to gluten. Timing of the blood tests is very important. You can have a less active flare of the reaction, whether it is GI, or rash, or mouth ulcers,etc... -
