  1. Blood in stool is never normal, but it isn't always a serious reason. Generally, bright red rectal bleeding is from the lower intestine or rectum. It can be from hemorrhoids, anal fissures(usually hurts with passage of stool) or it may be from polyps, colitis and yes, tumors and other less common conditions. Upper intestinal bleeding in stools is described...
  2. Hi Allyson. I have been a member about as long as you had been "lurking"......and there are 1210 members between us! That's a lot of "official"members, and doesn't count everyone else! I have found that most everyone here is kind, thoughtful and very passionate about celiac disease. You will find a sympathetic ear on the board and don't be bashful about chiming...
  3. I agree with everyone who weighed in on the apparent lack of protein in your diet. It may also be possible that more frequent, small meal/snacks including protein with your carbs might help. Protein and fat also help to slow down the absorption of starches/sugars. Some of this sounds like hypoglycemic reactions.
  4. That is why you end up doing what makes you feel well,i.e. a glutenfree diet....but some patients prefer to push the limits of diagnostic testing before they go there. Very reasonable, I think. One of my recent patients with multiple autoimmune conditions had a negative biopsy after a gluten challenge requested by his GI......he felt better all round on the...
  5. Definitely not your imagination...peripheral neuropathy is associated with celiac disease, and more mainstream medical literature is being published recently which will hopefully reinforce this for neurologists and internists. B12 may not be the only answer, and lab results may not confirm a deficiency, but neuropathy is diagnosable via a nerve conduction...
  6. Dr. Green's advice is the current standard of care for gluten challenge. Ursa's point has merit, except diabetes is diagnosed with a fasting blood sugar of 125...period. So it doesn't take eating oneself into a coma to get the gold standard diagnosis for diabetes. It doesn't get that easy with us celiacs, unfortunately. It depends on what kind of diagnosis...

    ARCHIVED Dr. Guandalini?

Kandi, That is exhilarating news!!! I am so happy it was a great visit. How is Thomas doing? Didn't Dr. Guandalini also see your daughter?
  8. Did they consider gall bladder disease ? It is usually painful in the right upper abdomen, but not always! It is typically cramping in nature with a build up of pain and then easing. If a stone was present and got lodged, it would be very intense pain, and usually with vomiting. Stones or sludge can move in and out of the duct, triggering painful spasms....
  9. Pat, First of all, I sympathize with your concerns. I have already had kidney cancer nearly 6 years ago now. Statistically having had one cancer increases the risk of having another one. but if you have now identified a risk factor (celiac) that CAN be controlled, you are blessed!! This is actually a good thing that you KNOW there is something you can do...

ARCHIVED Celiac Sprue & Doctor Too!

Stef, You didn't say if you were evaluated for myasthenia gravis?? If not, and the lid weakness/dragginess is happening.... you need to see a neurologist. And you always hear the horror stories about delivery........I bet you'll be fine. I'll defer a definitive answer about anesthesia to Russ!

ARCHIVED Celiac Sprue & Doctor Too!

Thank YOU, Jestgar! I have been here all along....sometimes I'm too tired to make a coherent post, and then sometimes I lose my thread. I try to post on different parts of the forum,too......I enjoy this part of my day.....so far !!
  12. Antibody response does not usually disappear within 2 weeks, especially if the titer is significantly elevated. You still have a chance at seeing an antibody rise. GI's love the tTG best...but it is not 100% accurate either. If you can, get a panel that includes AGA IgA, IgG; anti-endomysial(EMA) and tTG.
  13. I heard him speak in Memphis earlier this month, and I asked him about publishing. He said he had submitted articles for publication , but they had not responded. I didn't catch the journal name or maybe he didn't say.

ARCHIVED Celiac Sprue & Doctor Too!

Hi Charsweb, The article is nearly a zillion pages long so if you follow my lead on that post, you should be able to get it. I'm not the best at computers.....I still haven't figured out to make a link to another site ! If you think you have celiac, wait for the testing before you go to the diet, especially if it's a short time away. If it's all negative...
  15. There is a technical review article from the American Gastroenterological Association Institute from Gastroenterology Journal in November 2006 that states 4 weeks is the average time it takes to challenge with gluten. They say it may also take months to years to do the damage again. It's website is www.gastrojournal.org and follow the links to previous publications...
  16. Gosh, how I understand ! I've been gluten free for nearly 4 years now(except for the occasional glutenings) and did have a few mishaps early on....like I literally forgot I had celiac!! and took a bite of a hamburger(to the horror of my family).Or when I ordered macaroni and cheese in front of a co-worker and was chompimg away before we both were shocked...
  17. Tamari soy sauce is ok, but the only food allergen listed on the less expensive La Choy soy sauce is soy. I don't know if that's an option for you or not. Also, some Chinese restaurants have take out packets of soy sauce that don't have wheat. But you have to read the labels!!
  18. Is the endo a pediatric endocrinologist? Sounds like he's not listening to you...I agree thyroid antibodies need to be checked, but most definitely get him checked for Cushing's.Maybe a new endo??? Is there a children's teaching hospital to call nearby and get a referral ? Celiac is related to autoimmune thyroiditis or ANY thyroid condition. Other endocrine...
  19. Another club member here....my DH must get tired of hearing me say "what got me now??look at this!!" Good thing we've been together 30+ years, or he might take off ! I agree with Momma Goose about the back pain issue....and sometimes it's like low level menstrual cramps(sorry, guys!!!)
  20. Sometimes the GI's just "look" at the duodenum;think it looks normal to them and don't biopsy! Ask if they did a biopsy or not. And since is a patchy disease.....it can potentially miss any areas involved. I would suggest expediting the PCP appointment and get any blood work done ASAP since you have found gluten free makes you better.....it may be changing...
  21. Judy, I don't know if this might help, but red, itchy, moist rashes in skin folds sometimes get better with liquid Maalox applied to them. Use a cotton ball to apply gently a thin coat. You might test a small area first to be sure you won't have an unusual reaction. Like none of us have had THAT happen before!! Kind of works through the magnesium salts;soaking...

    ARCHIVED "the Trigger"

Cancer surgery in 2001; followed by episodes of D off and on ;followed by decreasing ferritin;then biopsy and diagnosis in 2003. Can only remember vague GI symptoms as a child, so I believe the cancer or operation was my trigger. Autoimmune thyroiditis followed 2 years later.
  23. Hi..I was diagnosed age 50. The average age at diagnosis now is 46 years(!)..+/- 10 years! Unfortunately American physicians are still unlikely to think of this diagnosis, and only diagnose about 1 in 5000....... . So it is very possible to live 38 years and not get "officially"diagnosed.
  24. You can try and override any malabsorption with mega dose vitamins and minerals. Be sure there is high dose B complex;folate;C;calcium/magnesium,and a general multivitamin. It doesn't always work if there is too much villous damage. But sometimes this will help some of the fatigue, and it won't affect your biopsy results. A good health food store should have...
