ARCHIVED Enterolab
mamabear replied to confusedks's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
So many good points here.....but I have my doubts. If he has enough proof to create a business...then he has everything to lose by publishing and nothing to gain. I heard him speak several months ago. It sounded good, but his material is several years in the making, and yet has not had it substantiated. I personally believe he's onto something, but I do not... -
ARCHIVED I Have gluten-free Cake In My Kitchen...
mamabear replied to Nantzie's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Slightly off topic........but I made the Kinnickkinnick chocolate cake....sliced it lengthwise...put gluten-free vanilla ice cream between the warmed up slice of cake and drizzled(more like dumped!!) Smucker's hot fudge over the top.........OMG, I thought I was back at Shoney's having a hot fudge cake!! I am fighting NOT to eat it right now!! -
ARCHIVED Worst Response From A Restaurant Yet!
mamabear replied to gfgypsyqueen's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Well.......about 3 years ago , DH and I and another couple went to LuLu Grille in Memphis and I was just learning the ropes in the restaurants. I explained to the waitress that I couldn't eat wheat or flour , and that I needed to know what was in the food I ordered,etc.. She wasn't the brightest kid...and this was reinforced when she brought bread to the... -

ARCHIVED What We Knew All Along
mamabear posted a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I found this article on PubMed(again.....I'm a frequent flyer there ) !! It's nice to know SOME GI's/pathologists are trying to figure out how some of the celiacs are being missed. Of course, we knew it all the time. Still nice to know some of 'em are open minded and not just giving it up. Open Original Shared Link -
Yes!!! I am MUCH better off than when I realized we had 2 full moons this month!! Reading all these great posts has mellowed my grumpiness and reassured me I am in the right forum!! I love the far out humor, and downright nuttiness ! It really makes my day. This WONDERFUL group of folks is so neat to come home to every night. And my DH of nearly 31 years...

ARCHIVED Just Diagnosed This Morning
mamabear replied to LLB's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Welcome. LLB You will hit a learning curve that goes at warp speed! I suggest you check out NoGluGirl's posts as she has wonderful lists of "can haves". Sometimes it's easier to know what you can do, rather than focus on the "can'ts". If you have questions, ask away........one thing about us celiacs.....we always have opinions!!! -
Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!! I love this site!! Karen- are the moons as full in Canada????? BTW, Banff is my absolutely favorite place on earth! Lisa- I can see the crescent gold moon in my mind! ARCHIVED The Dreaded Office Kitchen
mamabear replied to alamaz's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I can blow a whole day of good will by eating lunch in my office!!!! There's nothing worse than having to eat around all those cakes, cookies and bread and having to explain, explain, explain and avoid, avoid, avoid. I feel the anger well up in me, and I do believe I need to eat away from the break room to keep my sanity. Maybe I need to be more careful as you... -

ARCHIVED Staggering Statistic-why?seems Simple To Me
mamabear replied to dally099's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You are right,Tiffany......NOT finding the gene just rules it out.....or at least for now, as there is some research going for non DQ2/DQ8 . Getting the 5 tests is where you start. Of course ,it takes an enlightened medical establishment and an educated public to pull this off. Raven, wish there was something I could say to make some of your hurt go away... -
ARCHIVED Endo Results - Duodenum With Focal Gastric Metaplasia
mamabear replied to ravenwoodglass's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Ravenwoodglass, I read the link provided by Jestgar and it looks like annual EGD is the best way to monitor the metaplasia. Getting the CT scan will add extra information...sometimes MRI's of the abdomen are also done . If H pylori is involved, looks like treatment lessens the chance of malignancy. Let us know what your follow up tests show. -
It is virtually certain that Oprah does not have celiac disease as she had ZERO % European genes on the DNA ancestry documentary done for PBS about a year ago. That show was produced by/for Henry Louis Gates who is a department head at Harvard. I doubt she'd give us a second glance........but I'll write her, too. Maybe we can get her to realize most of her...

ARCHIVED Endo Results - Duodenum With Focal Gastric Metaplasia
mamabear replied to ravenwoodglass's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Ravenwoodglass, Ask for a copy of the pathology report. Most EGD biopsy specimens are stained for H Pylori as a routine. The report should state on there somewhere if it was done. Otherwise there are 2 available blood based tests..one is from a venipuncture and the other is a rapid fingerstick method similar to a strep test. Both test for antibodies to the... -
ARCHIVED What Is The Deal With Fibromyalgia?
mamabear replied to floridanative's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Beautifully stated post.......I believe FM is an extension of gluten sensitivity. Also that all fibros be tested for celiac disease if they fit the celiac patterns. -
ARCHIVED When To Repeat Egd?
mamabear replied to mamabear's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Yes, 4 looooooooooong years...............can you tell I'm having a pity party?? And DH gives me the eyes rolling when I complain about cross contamination! Mr Crumbs on the counter......no, I was NOT going to cook his garlic toast next to mine!! Ahem.....I do think you are on to something....I believe they'll have to redefine refractory sprue if many... -
ARCHIVED Layover In Memphis, Airport
mamabear replied to steveindenver's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Corky's is a well known Memphis barbecue place and they have a branch in the airport. I've not had a problem with their barbecue(sans bun ) and a websearch for Corky's and gluten free turns up several good hits...especially that the sauce is gluten-free. I did note the pork is cooked over hickory chips and charcoal....recent posters have said gluten may be... -
ARCHIVED Restless Legs Syndrom (rls)
mamabear replied to Smitten's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
Glad to be of help!! I am inexplicably attracted to PubMed....I think it's an addiction.......hmmmmmmmmmm..maybe I'll put in a search for TMI/celiac/night owlishness/insatiable desire to hold a laptop as a leg warmer ........Sorry!! Way off topic! -
ARCHIVED When To Repeat Egd?
mamabear posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I guess I need to quit looking up celiac in PubMed......I found this 2006 article when I was trying to cross reference celiac arthropathy and villous/joint damage resolution. Needless to say, it is a little more than disheartening to see we can do this gluten-free diet and still take so long to heal......and if we are older than 30 , we are worse off !!... -
ARCHIVED Restless Legs Syndrom (rls)
mamabear replied to Smitten's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
This is a recent article that shows RLS is primary or secondary, and that the secondary causes should be eliminated(pregnancy, chronic kidney disease or iron deficiency(=ferritin deficiency)) before you just treat with medication. Celiacs very commonly have iron deficiency, so that being said.....correct the iron before you treat the legs!!! BTW that great...
