ARCHIVED Pneumococcal Vaccine....have You Gotten Yours Yet?
mamabear posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
There are 2 common diseases that are associated with a hypofunctioning spleen. Sickle cell anemia is one and Celiac disease is the other. The biggest problem for us celiacs from hyposplenia is the risk of serious infection from certain common bacteria since our spleens don't effectively clear them out. A Pneumococcal conjugated vaccine is the preferred vaccine... -
ARCHIVED 10 Things I Hate About Celiac
mamabear replied to Mtndog's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
OK, serious time. #1 I am so sick of grilled chicken salads #2 I am tired of being "special" during lunch time at work #3 I am tired of one of my partners "kindly"offering to eat my portion of cake or cookies brought for everyone else #4 I am tired of getting irritable and angry when I've been glutened #5 I am tired of always having to read the... -
ARCHIVED 10 Things I Hate About Celiac
mamabear replied to Mtndog's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Sorry to hijack, but Jestgar......your reply finally did it! Tears are rolling down my face and it feels so great to laugh!!! -
Add me to the group. I would break out in red blotches over my face, neck and chest if I was upset or nervous or angry or had a mixed drink or wine...worst was in my teens to my 30's. It seemed to be less as I got older. I thought it was hormonally related , but it seems to be more celiac oriented. I haven't done it much at all for the past 4 years, but I...

Welcome to the forum, and we're glad you have joined us. I'm sorry you are having such a hard time right now. Hang in there....it will get better. My main concern is for you to see your GI doc or Internist as bleeding is not a usual symptom of celiac disease. Although they can occur concurrently, you need to be reevaluated for this particular problem. How...

ARCHIVED Cooking Question
mamabear replied to ppatin's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
What a wonderful friend you are! You remind me of my friend who cooked for me the first week of my diagnosis. She went to Wild Oats and we had a great meal and companionship. That's what is important, too. Not being afraid to have "us" over....and to be careful for us! One couple completely backed out of our dinner plans at their house, and they are in the... -
ARCHIVED Blood Test
mamabear replied to holdthegluten's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Sorry...I missed your other post. B12 is commonly low in celiac disease but so is iron, ferritin, folic acid, vitamin D, calcium, magnesium, vitamin A, vitamin K and others. Treating B12 without knowing folic acid levels can mask that deficiency, and be serious in its own right. Certainly if you are having symptoms ,more complete testing is in order. Maybe some... -
ARCHIVED Blood Test
mamabear replied to holdthegluten's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Most all vitamin tests are individually ordered, but multiple tests can be done from each tube. It may only take a fraction of a cc of serum to run the test. Most "red top " tubes have at least 1/2 cc per tube. -
ARCHIVED Gluten Challenge..suddenly Loads Of D Really Worried..
mamabear replied to MinxyMandy's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Mandy, You have a positive gluten challenge! But why would you stop 3 days before the biopsy when you've suffered for 5 weeks already?? Believe it or not, things can start to improve in the gut within 3 days. It probably cannot be done any sooner now than Tuesday, so I would wait on the gold standard diagnostic test . But I'd have my gluten-free diet lined... -

ARCHIVED In So Much Pain Is Tylenol An Anti Inflammatory And Safe?
mamabear replied to ravenwoodglass's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Ravenwood, Just a word of caution. Pick one form of the acetaminophen(tylenol) to use.....like 8hr /arthritis strength which is long acting (650 mg per tablet ) or the regular(325mg regular acting) or extra strength(500mg regular acting). The maximum dosage recommended is 4000 mg per day....I personally never get close to that amount. So it would be maximum... -
ARCHIVED Ever Been Glutened By Someone Who Was Trying To Prove You Would Not Be?
mamabear replied to angel42's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I understand how you must feel. It is no picnic being the index case in a family. and having to convince your DH that it is real !. I,too get tired of being "special" at mealtime, but I do not trust lightly ANYONE who prepares meals for me. We don't all react the same to being glutened.....not just us as individuals, but also at different times in our own... -
Sorry ! I'm tired and my spelling is off.....or I've coined a new hybrid word. Mediacal !!
-
Hi Rebecca....The main 2 tests are tissue transglutaminase antibody and endomysial antibody. Anti gliadin antibodies are not as specific for celiac disease, and are no longer considered "au courant" with the mediacal world. I still think they have some validity, so those (IgA and IgG) can be added as well. Keep us posted as to your progress.

ARCHIVED B12 Shots
mamabear replied to nama shivaya's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Another oral form of B12 and B6 and Folate replacement is in a prescription vitamin called Metanx. It is called"medical food".....which is pretty catchy for a slogan,eh? This seems to be superior to many forms of B12 as it is readily bioavailable and the active forms of these vitamins. It is very high potency. It is the methyl forms of B12 and Folate, and... -
Pain under the right shoulder blade or between the shoulder blades can be from the gall bladder. If it happens again, and especially if you get nausea, abdominal pain,gas(gee...this all sounds hauntingly familiar)......it might need testing......like an abdominal ultrasound or nuclear biliary scan.

HA!! Gave me a good chuckle! We do push the date expiration on a few products, but sour cream hasn't been one of them! We usually eat Daisy sour cream by the bucket from Costco!!

Off topic, but want to laud NoGluGirl for her GREAT posts and fantastic lists of products! Wish there was a way to print it all up for quick reference!

ARCHIVED Human Physical Charateristics
mamabear replied to deedub's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
I was the first in my family to get the diagnosis. My mother most likely had it and we had similar body types later in our adult lives. When I was 15, I was 5'7" tall and weighed 125# ! Let's just say now it's a different story. I have worked to lose just over 20# this past year and am still in the upper end of a decent BMI. My older sister used to be larger... -
Ah, yes,my bad . There are the new federal laws, but some products are still on shelves that were pre-Jan1,2006. So please be aware of the potential for hidden wheat in MFS.

Always check the sour cream....too many manufacturers put in modified food starch(~ gluten here in the USA) in sour cream. It is nearly always in the little take out individual sour creams.

ARCHIVED New Diagnosis, Overwhelmed
mamabear replied to Melissa Courtney's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
There are many quick references available through this parent website, the Celiac Sprue association of America and specialty stores as Whole Foods or Wild Oats(though I read it will all be Whole Foods before long). I am 4 years into the diet and I still refence Bette Hagman's cookbooks for their prefaces. Quick references for condiments,spices,vinegars(I... -
Gosh I hate to be the bearer of bad news.........but McDonald's french fries are not gluten free. You can check out their corporate website(I just reaffirmed this) and see how little they serve that is gluten free. There was a lawsuit brought about regarding the french fries....and some press coverage as they had prior claimed to be gluten-free. They no longer...

Yes, he is sadly mistaken. Asymptomatic celiac disease accounts for nearly 50% of new diagnoses according to recent studies. What you don't know CAN hurt you. I would suggest finding a celiac-competent doctor through your local celiac societies. First degree relatives have a 10-16% chance of being celiac.....so all your parents, siblings and any children should...
