  1. I read your posts and I am more concerned that you may have inflammatory bowel disease. The antibody levels are not impressive for celiac disease, and I didn't see if an endomysial antibody test was done or not. The tissue transglutaminase antibody and endomysial antibody are now considered the appropriate screening antibodies for celiac. As to the positivity...
  2. Last weekend we were in Miami(no sweat on the departure as we ate breakfast at home in the AM ), but a 4 PM departure for home was pretty bad for a celiac who DIDN'T THINK TO PACK FOOD !!!!!!!!!!!!!! YIKES!!! After clearing security, there was no way I'd go back to try to find food in the main terminal. The gates for Northwest Airlines there had basically...
  3. LISA!!!!!!!!!!!! Boy, am I ever late!! Hope it was a GREAT BIRTHDAY(sorry, I can't figure out the fancy scripts!!)........and all is well. Turning 29 again, eh??
  4. I was very glad to see such a comprehensive article in the NEJM. Some of his information was daunting, in that nonresponders' diagnoses are much more limited than I thought, and fairly dismal!!!!!! Guess we had all better tighten up wherever we can......I'm thinking about retiring and dedicating the rest of my life to raising my own food! Nah.........

    ARCHIVED Geographic Tongue

I think it's like the chicken and the egg......which came first? Is it naturally inflamed or "naturally" deficient of vitamins and minerals?? Some geographic tongue appears as "chronic inflammation" on biopsy. I personally feel it is a spectrum of GI pathology which includes "burning mouth" and canker sores......all of which reminds me of celiac symptomatology...
  6. Sounds like he was on the wrong end of the scope that day!!! You have it all correct....it was too soon for a gluten challenge, and if he didn't check Immunoglobulin A levels, you might have false negatives for the blood tests. Big chip on a lot of their shoulders and it makes no sense at all......if I ever get enlightened from one who's worth a crap, I...
  7. To everyone who responded----- Yes, he really said just that. He did get a couple of points right about celiac.....most adults are now found 2* to being iron deficient, and he did say he screened IBS patients for celiac. BUT!! Calling us a cult is insulting and demeaning. He was not aware I have celiac, nor was I willing to share that info after he ...
  8. Ok, I think I can write about it now without popping my cork. Went to a medical meeting last week about constipation, and asked what I thought was a reasonable question about the incidence of celiac disease presenting as constipation in his practice. He asked if the audience believed the incidence in the population was as reported, and too many of them(mostly...
  9. Mouth ulcers from a pinpoint blister that pokes out until it pops,,,to superficial ulcers on my gums, tongue feels scalded....yep, that's my first or close second signs I've been glutened. A combo of liquid benadryl/liquid maalox/and Rx viscous lidocaine (swish and spit out) also helps. Oh yes! Staying on high dose vitamin B complex and Vit C is the best...
  10. It will take awhile(weeks to a couple of months) to heal ;and in the meanwhile ,it most likely will take mega- megadoses of your vitamins and supplements to be enough to be assimilated. I haven't read your other post yet, so I'm not aware of who you have to help you, medically speaking. If you have a GP, Internal Medicine doctor, GI,etc. I'd suggest asking...
  11. Hey Momma Goose !! Hope Gabby gave you some wind for beneath your wings!! And a little rain, too ! We all love our Momma Goose and wish you well.
  12. RWG, I think a GP is what you need. Maybe a youngish sort.......not too close to training but not so far along they are set in their ways! Kind of sounds like a marriage!! The best screening tests for Addison's are serum sodium(will be low); serum potassium(will be high) and 24 hour urine cortisol(will be low). Hope this helps
  13. I posted this in another area, but think it's best to add it here. It does not require a susbscription to go to this website, and THIS month's edition has 2 fantastic articles. You can't miss them!
  14. Ravenwoodglass, If you have known adrenal insufficiency, you cannot, repeat cannot be without a physician to prescribe corticosteroids. It is downright dangerous. Lack of cortisol and also lack of thyroid hormone to the Nth degree is incompatible with life. Maybe you do not have Addison's disease...if not, please disregard my warning.
  15. Good news! I just tried www.annals.org and it is there for your perusal! No subscription required. I highly recommend this as an academic resource.......based in Europe where we all know they are light years ahead of the USA!
  16. The reference is from Annals of Internal Medicine 4 September 2007 volume 147 number 5. One is "Accuracy of Serologic Tests and HLA-DQ Typing for Diagnosing Celiac Disease" Hadith, von Blomberg,Crusius,Bloemena and others Second article(same journal) is "Tailored Testing for Celiac Disease" Rashtak and Murray There is a website www.annals.org...
  17. There are 2 new articles that address how difficult it is to diagnose celiac disease in the Annals of Internal Medicine....Sept 4 edition, I believe. Sorry I can't be more specific as I am travelling home as I write, and I don't have the journal with me. They do go into the pitfalls of diagnosis and include the topic of gluten sensitive enteropathy that is...
  18. We have an old family recipe we called Chevrolet Chicken, because we got the recipe from a wife of the Chevy car dealer in town! It's very simple and very delicious and inherently gluten-free. Cut up pieces of chicken......we usually get a "pix of the chix" here in Memphis Peel baking potatoes and cut into 1- 1 1/2 " cubes 1 bag baby carrots(already...
  19. I am so sad to hear of her death! She was my touchstone when I felt tossed in confusion about celiac. I kept 2 copies of her"Gluten Free Gourmet", and I loan out a third copy to newly diagnosed celiacs. She helped me feel empowered when control was absent;hope and confidence when I went to the stores......and only today, recommended her books to my niece...
  20. Thanks!! I loved Johnny Carson! Off topic, but Craig Ferguson is hysterically funny.....in case you get a case of the up -late-at-nighters! We had 9 days of >100* and ended the streak today, thank goodness! 5 of those days were new record highs, and 4 tied old ones! Tomorrow a balmy 96*.......... Did you get back to the 80's??
  21. Happy Birthday !!!!!!!!!!!! Just barely made it in time!!
  22. How about feels like 100* at 10 pm in Downtown Memphis !!!! It's so hot here......how hot is it?......it's so hot that the chickens are laying fried eggs! Sorry.......the heat is frying my brain! Our 7 day forecast is for 7 more days of 100* days!
  23. Well stated, Doll.......I was at a dinner meeting last week.......asked the manager if they could do gluten-free for me...he said yes......but my server told me he used to have a problem with wheat, and understood what I needed......said he'd "take care of me".....and I swear I think I got invisible gluten somewhere that night at a low level. Belly cramping...
  24. I read it, and it reads like a bunch of airheaded attention seekers. gluten-free is a hot,hot subject right now, so they are just trying to be au courant! Sounds like she didn't inherit Martha's smarts.
  25. Kate, There is no doubt you have a GI doc who does not keep up with the literature! Unfortunately this is far too common here in the USA . My niece had her EGD and colonoscopy done(East TN) BEFORE they got her serologies back, and since "It looked normal" ,he didn't biopsy anything!!!Then they had to call and tell her she had celiac disease based on...
