Yes, I agree. You should have heard as soon as it was known to be a threat to your son. No doubt.

It does sound like the GI was acting defensively.......probably had the report in the chart for the day of the planned office visit which was cancelled...may have never laid eyes on the actual report until the patient was in the office in 2008! Offices are run differently, and that one might put results in a chart for same day appointments. I wonder when...

As WW340 said, it depends on the doctor and what you need. We celiacs are not all alike. A smart doc will check mineral and vitamin levels and replace as indicated from the beginning. And then retest for successful results. She/he will also check bone density for baseline results. Antibody levels(if your body can generate them) should be followed in ~6 months...

When I started this thread a long time ago, I was being MOSTLY tongue in cheek!!......It is a sad state of affairs when you read through it. It is obvious we need better listeners out there with medical degrees !! Sorry for the "bump".......I just had to!

ARCHIVED Has Anyone Else Been Watching The Commodities Prices?
mamabear posted a topic in Introduce Yourself / Share Stuff
I've been watching the price of corn go up and up, and wheat go down. Today corn was $6.02 a bushel, and wheat at $7.96 ! Not too long ago it was almost a 2:1 for wheat. I'm hoping the food manufacturers don't start up with the modified food starch filled with wheat again !!!!! -
ARCHIVED Still Sick, Any Suggestions?
mamabear replied to fun-size's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Great reply from Momma Goose. My suggestion for your back up plan is to ask your physician for an antispasmodic med like Levsin,Symax (trade name drugs are more expensive, but you are better able to vet out a gluten free status from the manufacturer). They will not stop the bowel motility, but will slow it down and decrease the cramping. The need to take... -
Hate to rain on your parade, but I have found WAY too many GI specialists who cannot think outside the box, and if the tTA is not positive, they abandon further thought. Alas, also too many FP's and IM's have not taken the time to read about THE MOST COMMON DISEASE OF MALABSORPTION in the Western Hemisphere!! There truly are more educated people on this Forum...

Lisa, I can see your desire to improve and maintain your health ****(4 stars!!), but if you have not given diet, weight loss and exercise a thorough 6 months trial, please do so! It is too easy to jump into Rx (and some patients WANT the pills and no effort on their part) but there are several other Rx and nonRx products that are generally less side effect...

ARCHIVED Anyone Else With Problems With Maybelline Eyeliner?
mamabear posted a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Has anyone else noticed a sensitivity to Maybelline solid eyeliner? I had used it for years without any reaction. About a month or so ago, my lids started feeling itchy and like there was grit near my lid lines. I thought it was from not removing the makeup at bedtime ....so I got better about taking it off with plain Vaseline. It did not help, so I went... -
ARCHIVED Villi Normal
mamabear replied to mom2one's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Technically, no....celiac disease really means intestinal destruction, but there is movement in pathology circles to quantify the numbers of intraepithelial lymphocytes to establish the diagnosis BEFORE villous blunting. That would be nice if we could get the slide guys on board for a faster Dx !! There are still too many docs who stop the search if tTG... -
Dr. Anca Pop in Memphis, TN. Unbelievably thorough, kind and compassionate.

Scott, I did what you suggested, but I cannot directly access the website through AOL. I am able to use Microsoft Internet Explorer and get to the site, so I'm ok anyway....I'll keep trying the old way and see if something shakes loose sometime!!
-
It is not normal for me either. All I can do to sign on is to use my drop down on my computer task bar and find an old listing I'm using over and over. When I try to access www.glutenfreeforum.com , all I get is a page with a few numbers and "webhost rollover" !! Scott, can you help? But at least I can go backwards and still actually get on .

ARCHIVED Mouth Sores... Any Ideas? Please !
mamabear replied to Aimee D.'s topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Hi I have always taken mega doses of B complex and Vitanin C when I get a mouth ulcer. The combo of liquid benadryl, maalox and liquid lidocaine( Rx) has also helped the pain. Hope you are better now. -
Ch-ch-changes!!!! It's not easy, being green !!!!!!!!!!! I'm like the other poster, whatever you want ,Scott....I SO appreciate your site.

ARCHIVED Repeat Egd/colonoscopy After 4 1/2 Years Gluten Free
mamabear replied to mamabear's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Many thanks to all who answered. Unfortunately I did not have any antibodies checked at the time of biopsy....guess I was asleep at the wheel for that one. The GI didn't think to check them, and I was so stunned when he said celiac that all I did that night was internet research for what to do the next day. I did have the antibodies....complete panel except... -
ARCHIVED Healed And Never Get Sick
mamabear replied to Lisa's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Wow, Lisa.....I had added a topic tonight that covered my recent repeat scopes.......so my answer would be I still feel the bloat, abd cramps, diarrhea, mouth ulcers, muscle cramps IF I get an inadvertent glutening. I haven't felt a symptom free known accident ...ever. I am partially encouraged that my gut is less damaged than 4 1/2 years ago, but discouraged... -
ARCHIVED Repeat Egd/colonoscopy After 4 1/2 Years Gluten Free
mamabear posted a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Well, I've been gluten-free for 4 1/2 years now.....only the rare glutening....maybe 10 times total...the last one definitely was in June of this year. I had repeat scopes a week ago , and the verdict was mild villous blunting and mild IEL in the duodenum, "consistent with treated celiac sprue". Part of me is very happy it is better than on diagnosis(what... -
ARCHIVED Article From Finland About Increasing Incidence Of Celiac
mamabear replied to mamabear's topic in Publications & Publicity
Open Original Shared Link I hope this works! I am trying to send a full article about world incidence of celiac disease and it's very surprising! I was trying for the Irish connection, but it must be more fable than fact. That a subset of Africans are the highest in the world(>5%) is amazing. And all that wheat that is sent over for food!!!!!!!!!! -
ARCHIVED Blood Test Back....
mamabear replied to loco-ladi's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Many celiacs have lower than normal cholesterol when diagnosed with celiac disease, but the numbers may normalize or increase as foods are absorbed better after a gluten-free diet. No matter how you slice it, an HDL("good kind") less than 40 is an independent cardiac risk factor ...period. Natural ways to increase it is to lose weight and exercise. Of course... -
ARCHIVED Article From Finland About Increasing Incidence Of Celiac
mamabear posted a topic in Publications & Publicity
Open Original Shared Link Found this article and I thought it was thought provoking. Finland probably has the highest incidence of celiac disease in the world, and the authors are implying that the rise in their diagnoses are not due only to better detection.....but also environmental issues?? Wish I could pull up the full article. It does seem that with... -
ARCHIVED Interpreting Blood Work
mamabear replied to borst's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I found the post and reference. ..unfortunately you have to have the journal (or pay to access it) to see it. If you have access to a medical library, it's in the Annals of Internal Medicine Sept 4,2007 edition. I don't have any way to link it for you......sorry. I found it to be very complete in diagramming the thought processes of making a celiac diagnosis... -
ARCHIVED Interpreting Blood Work
mamabear replied to borst's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Certainly sounds like blood only on tissue paper could be just hemorrhoids. The diet will not affect your endoscopy/colonoscopy except if you heal celiac disease damage in the process...so that's good! A personal letter to the GI doc /assistant doesn't help up there?? I posted a flow chart on the diagnosis of celiac disease (and what else it can be ) a few... -
ARCHIVED Interpreting Blood Work
mamabear replied to borst's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Generally speaking, celiac patients do not have bloody stools unless there is a specific reason.....hemorrhoids,polyps,bleeding ulcers,etc.. Celiac disease by itself does not cause bleeding, although it can cause anemia from malabsorption of iron( B12, folate, too). Well....I guess there are exceptions to everything......guess a severe Vit K deficiency from...
