ARCHIVED Restless Legs Syndrom (rls)
mamabear replied to Smitten's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
To me , RLS is the leg version of IBS !! Still a syndrome(group of symptoms) and not a bona fide diagnosis. It is a descriptive "diagnosis",and the source of the symptoms should be sought out and attempt to correct the reason. Yes, medications can work for RLS, but then again,so does Immodium and Levsin/Pamine/Symax for IBS. And sometimes, we know why it... -
ARCHIVED Should Celiacs Do A Colon Cleanse?
mamabear replied to wdwmaggie's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
The colon packs stool and absorbs water back into the blood stream...can't see that adding watery fluids from below is a good thing for celiacs ......if you do a colon cleanser from above, you may be irritating the small intestine and creating excessive movement and cramps...so, no, I would not do it. -

ARCHIVED Follow Up Endoscopy?
mamabear replied to cdfiance's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm with you, Happy Girl....Better to go ahead and check it out. If Alex is getting weekly IV iron and B12,the gut absorption is being bypassed. Maybe also a consultation with a hematologist is in order...if not already done. -

ARCHIVED Do Symptoms Come And Go?
mamabear replied to familyfirst's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
You have definitely earned the right to rant. I feel bad for the medical community's ignorance of celiac disease then and still now. At least ONE doctor of yours could figure it out. I am so sorry. If we were 100% symptomatic 100% of the time.....it'd be a lot easier to figure out and I guess we'd all be diagnosed by the time we were out of diapers. So the... -
I thought this was thought provoking, granted the numbers of patients isn't all that high. We all have likely felt what we call brain fog......this article seems to give a reason that is often directly connected to celiac sprue! So many of us are iron deficient....and it looks like replacing our iron stores will help . Open Original Shared Link

I found it interesting that the design of this survey included paying the respondents.....therefore they already have provided a biased study. I couldn't find how many did the survey at all , or those who did it without cashing a $20 check. Also today most of the companies have a $10-12 limit per person for a lunch, so it's hardly an extravagant meal. The...

ARCHIVED Is It In My Head?
mamabear replied to sarahelizabeth's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
sarahelizabeth, Please don't bash yourself for thinking of this! Most doctors do not understand that being overweight can also be a symptom of celiac disease. When your body starves, it saves fat for energy sources. When you are malabsorbing....celiac or other malabsorptive conditions, your body can hold on to the fatty stores and make it very difficult... -
ARCHIVED Strange Feeling
mamabear replied to JodiC's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Gee, I hate to sound so dire, but if you are a "mature" adult/diabetic/hypertensive/hyperlipidemic/+ family history.....please get an abdominal usg and at the least, a doc to feel your abdomen for an aneurysm. Pulsatile mass + low back /mid back pain can be symptoms of this. However if you are very thin, it can just be the ability to feel your own normal... -
ARCHIVED Do You Celebrate Your Celiac Diagnosis Day?
mamabear replied to gfgypsyqueen's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Well, considering my biopsy was done on April Fool's Day and the GI didn't tell me he had added a biopsy for celiac disease, so I didn't get the chance to eat one more piece of real birthday cake.... And I thought it was just an extended April Fool's joke....no, I don't celebrate the day. I do however celebrate my heightenned awareness of celiac disease and... -
Walter, Eating and drinking the wrong things right now may give you a very brief fleeting comfort fix, but I'm afraid it will bring a bigger aggravation of the glutenings with piling on the depressed mood and compound your gut issues. Try to meditate(I hope you've done that before ; exercise your body so your brain can take a break; treat yourself to a...

The official medical line of celiac disease is the gold standard biopsy proven intestinal damage of lymphocytic infiltration and villous blunting. There are some researchers who have recently published that a positive tTG plus anemia, weight loss or diarrhea is celiac disease .....with or without a biopsy. I have searched the PubMed sites trying to find this...

ARCHIVED How Much Gluten Do You Have To Eat?
mamabear replied to atflyaway's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I think an equivalent of 4 slices of bread daily for 4 to 6 weeks also is considered a gluten challenge here in the US. -
A belated HAPPY BIRTHDAY to you!!!!!!! Sorry to be late !!! I hope it was a good one !!!! Ann

Open Original Shared Link Here is a less scary article and even gives a possible plus side to breast cancer. However, my mother died of breast cancer and she was my apparent link to celiac . There are other articles that support a lesser fear of malignancy but none are as current as my first post in this thread. Having already had a major malignancy and...

Open Original Shared Link This is a new(March 2007) article that pretty well states the longer it takes to diagnose celiac( or the longer a celiac eats gluten....same difference)..the higher the risk of cancers...GI being the most likely. BTW,it is very hard to find GI lymphoma . The only good noninvasive clue is suspicion of "haziness" on a CT of the...

Well, I'm not Catholic, but I understand the standard wafer is wheat and therefore a problem to celiacs. A member of the church has told me they can get a "gluten lite" wafer, but it still has gluten in it. This creates a dilemna for Catholics......she also told me that they believe it HAS to be wheat for communion. My church is Presbyterian, and they will...

ARCHIVED Redbridge - What Does Gluten-free Mean Anheuser-busch?
mamabear replied to rh4's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I had my first Redbridge tonight and no problems! It reminded me of Bass Ale which was an old favorite. Even my DH who doesn't drink much at all thought it tasted good. I was thrilled to get that taste again......and I made a gluten-free pizza today and baked a Kinnickkinnick chocolate cake! gluten-free heaven here today! -
ARCHIVED Pneumococcal Vaccine....have You Gotten Yours Yet?
mamabear replied to mamabear's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Open Original Shared Link One more link( and then I'm done!! ) which does address gluten-free diet compliance. This study is from Italy, and I think most of us agree the Europeans are farther along in their celiac science! It is recent... a 2006 article. Of course, we should have a say in what parts of medicine we choose to use.....but I figured since... -
ARCHIVED Pneumococcal Vaccine....have You Gotten Yours Yet?
mamabear replied to mamabear's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Open Original Shared Link Here is the main article I wanted to link. I guess it still doesn't make it 100% clear by the abstract that the celiacs were gluten-free compliant. My general thought is that it only is talking about celiac patients and not delineating dietary adherence. What are your thoughts now? -
ARCHIVED Pneumococcal Vaccine....have You Gotten Yours Yet?
mamabear replied to mamabear's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Open Original Shared Link See if this one comes through. It's from 1995 but still quite relevant. I will continue to look for the more recent one I found earlier today. I think I figured out how to link........ -
ARCHIVED Pneumococcal Vaccine....have You Gotten Yours Yet?
mamabear replied to mamabear's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
No argument taken. I wish I knew how to link a site, but go to the Entrez Pub Med website and put celiac disease/ pneumococcal vaccine/ hyposplenia on their search. I'll try and figure how to do the link, but I'm leaving the house for a few hours . One additional word of caution.....these are not given annually! Usually given at or near diagnosis, and then...
