  1. It does take a while for food cravings to end. One's body gets used to a healthier diet, but it takes a few weeks (and no backtracking). At least, this is according to Dr. Doug Lisle, who wrote about this phenomenon in a book called "The Pleasure Trap." I haven't read it, but I've listened to many who swear by it Myself, I have so many books at home...
  2. I'm glad you found your answer. I ran across this book about California homeschooling. I don't know what all is in it, but it may be worth your while: Open Original Shared Link In the description, it mentions the California Homeschool Network & its email list. This might be worth looking into also. Good luck!
  3. I'm 54; it's about time my face cleared up I just thought of something else that helped somewhat. I switched from using a fluoride toothpaste. After finally diagnosing myself by looking at gross pictures of skin disorders, I figured out I had perioral dermititis. Reading up on that, I found that some people got results from changing their toothpaste...
  4. I think humans have not evolved to be able to eat large amounts of processed carbs, anyway. People in the world who eat a mostly plant-based diet (largely unprocessed carbs) rarely get heart disease or type 2 diabetes. Indeed, this sort of diet has been used successfully to treat both problems. (See Esselstyn & Ornish for the first; Barnard for the...
  5. Well, no. Plenty of us don't get diarrhea. (And since when is a neurologist an expert on food intolerances?) You had a pretty clear response to diet change. So it seems clear to me that diet is involved. If you added soy to make up for the absent diary, that could be your problem right there. Also, both gluten and casein can trigger withdrawal symptoms...
  6. Well, Dr. Fine of Enterolab is a doctor. Why isn't his diagnosis an official one? Yes, other doctors may disagree with him (or not). But doctors are not unknown to disagree with one another. Whatever happened to, "Doctor, it hurts when I do this? ... Well, then, don't do that." If there is some doctor who won't accept the Enterolab results and your...
  7. Thanks for the suggestions. I think I'll be able to manage. I've found four possible restaurants close to where I'll be, which should cover lunch and dinner for the two days I'll be there. I'll just bring things for my own breakfasts. I was assuming that restaurants or take out is what we are going to do. I have to figure out how to politely tell...
  8. If they included soy, it would have to be listed on the label because of the federal labeling law for major allergens.
  9. I never saw any particular advantage to accredited versus not. I can see it might help if transferring back to a regular high school is possible. But colleges, by and large, don't care. If there is a nonaccredited school involved, or regular homeschooling, they look at test scores, recommendations, outside courses, curricula descriptions, work product...
  10. That's OK. I should have expressed myself better. I just wanted you to know we are definitely on the same side.
  11. I don't think we disagree. I certainly don't disagree with anything you've said, except to the extent that you think I am espousing a position I have never taken. Let me try to explain myself further. I apparently didn't do as good a job as I might have the first go round I was saying that most people on this board do not think that celiac and gluten...
  12. Thanks for the recipes. Yes, I still do. There are a few of us on the gluten issues board over there. Are you one of them? I'm there under another name. I'll have to look up that post. Although I'm still not sure that vinegar would cause me problems. If distillation takes out the gluten molecule, I don't see why it would have any problem with the...
  13. OK, you have a little one and a lot on your plate. I found a gluten-free candy list for you. It also points out the ones that aren't safe: Open Original Shared Link I hope your daughter gets feeling better soon.
  14. I think complete recovery after only a week would be the exception, rather than the rule. Soy could also be the problem, as pointed out already. Artificial (and natural for that matter) flavors can contain gluten. You have to check. I'm not a big candy eater myself. I'm sure someone has posted a list of safe candy somewhere though.
  15. I really haven't seen many people on this board saying that gluten sensitivity is the same thing as celiac. They may come in thinking that but are soon disabused of that notion The only evidence of long-term damage for NCGS I know of is that of neurological problems, which are present not just with the "celiac genes" but DQ1. There needs to be more...
  16. OK, my link is working now. The cancer study is over 500 pages or something like that. I've yet to plow through that. But here is the summary: Open Original Shared Link For those with lots of time on their hands or the desire to look at the evidence on any of these recommendations: Open Original Shared Link
  17. Lucky for you! I think part of the problem may be that doctors don't get complete continuing education. Do they have time to keep up with every article in every journal? In this country at least, they have the drug company reps visiting them, sponsoring the new research, showing up at medical conferences, etc. Something like celiac or anything related...
  18. Is the small amount of caffeine in chocolate enough to affect you? There is always dark chocolate without dairy, which is what I prefer anyway. I did do some research since my last post. I put it in another thread specifically about yeast: Open Original Shared Link
  19. Oh, OK. I'm casein-intolerant and I got excited there for a bit. Eliminating the lactose won't help. Oh well
  20. For a different point of view, you may be interested in the research findings from the National Weight Control Registry. This records people who have maintained at least a 30 pound weight loss over a year. Here is a link to a list of their abstracts: Open Original Shared Link Here is a summary of what these people did: Open Original Shared Link...
  21. I don't eat chips or fry things. My reaction to high fat foods is kinda nasty sometimes. What you have to do is read labels. Soy is a major allergen and so has to be listed on food labels if it is present. If it is in chips or a particular oil, it would say. For snacks beyond fruit, I use popcorn (microwaved without oil), Larabars, or Glutino breakfast...
  22. I sympathize. When I realized I reacted to the oil, it seemed to take a lot of possible foods out of the equation. I'm a vegetarian and my favorite local veggie restaurant uses soybean oil exclusively. They only have one entree that can be made without soy, it seems, and it isn't nearly as good as any of the many other items I've had over the years. ...
  23. What did all of you add to your diets when you went gluten-free? I know I used to suffer horrific cramps. I started eating low fat and never had a problem again. My daughter is off in college and can't always eat this way. She finds that when she eats more fat (usually dairy), her periods are heavier and she gets cramps. If she eats better, she has...
  24. Just a word of warning. This place can be addictive It is so nice to have a place to talk to folks dealing with the same issues. Where else can we discuss our poo at length, for instance? I know my husband doesn't want to hear about mine anymore
  25. Here is quite a bit of information about cholesterol, triglycerides, and statins: Open Original Shared Link The doctor wanted to put my husband on statins. Instead, dh went on the diet described above and his blood levels dropped substantially. Worldwide, people who eat this way rarely, if ever, get heart disease. Indeed, this is the only diet I...
