Here's a fantastic scone recipe from the Gluten Free Gourmand, but it calls for butter (a lot of it!!). I'm not sure what you could use to substitute... maybe earth balance? The baking mix I used was 1.25 C white rice flour, 1/2 C potato starch and 1/4 C tapioca starch. I've done it with coconut milk (and condensed milk in a pinch) and it came out great...

I am a very light packer (usually one carry-on for a trip, no matter how long), so my list is shorter. I'll always bring a few snacks (cheese and fruit if traveling for a while or (as long as there aren't any border crossings!), nuts or bars otherwise), a container of gluten-free soy sauce (I use a small re-usable 3-oz container), and at least one packet...

ARCHIVED Asked To Leave A Restaurant
Char replied to i-geek's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Sorry this happened to you! This happened to me in Germany -- which, given the penchant there for meat and potatoes, is a bit surprising (especially as I kept trying to say just plain meat would be fine), but I think it was because they didn't know what gluten was and thought it was just too much bother to go through. I've found that it helps to show... -
Hi all, I just got back from a week's cruise to Alaska on the Diamond Princess. It was an absolutely *amazing* experience (both the trip and the food!!). I have never had a better gluten-free eating experience! We told them a month in advance that I needed a gluten-free diet (required so that they know how much to buy, I think), but I was so...

ARCHIVED Camping Food- What Kind Of Protein?
Char replied to munchkinette's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Tastybites are great -- they don't use up too much fuel to heat (just put into a pot and boil with some water that you can use to cook instant rice or pasta with) and have protein already in them. Hard cheese (like a block of cheddar) works well too -- it'll be ok for a few days, although I wouldn't bring it to the desert (ok for at least up a few days... -
Mark Bittman just posted a new recipe on the NY Times -- and it's gluten-free! Open Original Shared Link -Char

ARCHIVED gluten-free Sesame Balls And Other Chinese - Chinese Food
Char replied to B G Free's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Hi B Gluten-Free, I'm only gluten-intolerant, so I don't know if I'm the best guide or not, but the below are some things I've found that are fine. 1) the bbq/satay sauce in the silver metal cans (you'll know what I mean when you go into the store) - the brand = bullhead. 2) Lee Kum Kee: Open Original Shared Link (including oyster sauce!) The... -
ARCHIVED Do You Think Mcdonalds Will Ever Roll Out gluten-free Stuff?
Char replied to UnhappyCoeliac's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
They have gluten-free buns in Finland (or at least they did two or three years ago)... -
I've roasted root vegetables with a tiny bit of oil and tossed them (after they're cooked) with balsamic vinegar. You could probably make the sauce a bit fancier, but I like it as is... A quick (although not that tasty) option is to make sandwiches with rice cakes. The rice cakes get a bit soft/soggy, which isn't as bad as it sounds, but that keeps them...

ARCHIVED Hungry Mother, Gargoyles On The Square And Fiore
Char posted a topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Three gluten-free finds in the Boston Area -- Hungry Mother (by Kendall/MIT) (www.hungrymothercambridge.com) is a semi-fancy southern restaurant, using quite a bit of locally grown food. The food is amazing, the waitstaff incredibly friendly, and the ambience nice but not stuffy -- a bit like a friend's back porch. All of their (current) entrees except... -
Celiac Chicks had a post about this recently: Open Original Shared Link (about halfway down the page) Have a great time! Italy's amazing -Char

I have that model -- it's really great! I make a loaf of bread every week (freezing whatever I don't eat that day) and then have breakfast for the entire week... the instructions book even comes with a gluten free bread recipe. I did notice, though, that when I tried to sub out some brown rice flour with sweet rice (an experiment to try to recreate the...

ARCHIVED Boston's North End Now Has gluten-free Options!
Char replied to BostonCeliac's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Just to chime in -- Marco is amazing! I've been there twice now; definitely call there in advance to get the bread. The coolest thing is that their menu seems to change seasonally. -Char -
So I imagine that Lore's back from Argentina now, but for anyone else who might be going to Buenos Aires, there's an awesome health food store, Dietetico Viamonte, on Viamonte (I think it's Viamonte 859). They awesome gluten-free muffins, which I carted with me everywhere, cookies, and even empanadas! Definitely worth checking out if you go. -Char

ARCHIVED Is Backpacking Possible?
Char replied to majicbunnies's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I think that this depends on which country you're in; it seems like if you do a YHA hostel, it usually has a kitchen (though they're usually a bit lacking in the charm). if you pick up a good guidebook (I use Lonely Planet, tho it sucked for Argentina), the book will say whether there is a kitchen available... oh, something that I find helpful is that... -
Hi Heather, I was in Finland two years ago, and had a fantastic experience. Here's a link to the Finnish celiac society's list of gluten-free restaurants in Finland: Open Original Shared Link (for some of the descriptions, you may need to use something like Google Translator) I worked off this list at first, but by the end of my trip, I would just walk...

ARCHIVED gluten-free Cupcakes Now In Boston/cambridge Area
Char replied to BostonCeliac's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
Huh. Well, I guess my tastes are just different from everyone else's. It seems like everyone likes Babycakes, which I thought were pretty gross, actually, and I like Kickass, which other people don't seem to. The other places sound great -- have to give them a try when I'm actually thinking far enough in advance to pre-order. Thanks for the tips! -
I've done a bit of the traveling backpacking, and hostels w/ kitchens were definitely my friends (you should check, because not all of them have). Also some countries are better than others (Finland and Taiwan were AMAZING, Germany stunk, and I heard Italy and Argentina are good) (tho Taiwan may only have been so good because I speak the language). Usually...

ARCHIVED gluten-free Cupcakes Now In Boston/cambridge Area
Char replied to BostonCeliac's topic in Gluten-Free Restaurants
I got some cupcakes at Kickass this weekend, and I thought they were awesome! Better than Babycakes in NYC, I thought. Not perfect (the icing was too sweet for me) but really good texture (even slightly springy), and not at all dry. The Mojito cupcake was a bit too alcohol-y for me, but my fiance (who is a gluten-eater but eats gluten-free anyway to keep... -
Thanks for your blog posting, karmalaw! I'm also going to Argentina, and am excited to try out some of the places you mention. -Char

My experience has been that it varies on the restaurant -- some places, for instance, puts soy sauce in their pad thai. I've generally had pad thai or curry without any problems.

Happy early birthday! I had a TERRIBLE time at Maggiano's -- I think it might depend on when you go. I've been to the one in Philly, and it's always been terrific -- the chef comes out and everything -- but I went on a Saturday night a few weeks ago, and the waiter refused to give me anything except for gluten-free pasta and tomato sauce. He even threw...

ARCHIVED Has Anyone Been To Peru While Gluten-free?
Char replied to GeoffCJ's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
You've probably already booked your trip, but I'm planning to go there myself, and I found that Peru Treks (www.perutreks.com) says that they can accommodate gluten-free diets, and Enigma (www.enigmaperu.com) has a comment from someone on their website that says that their gluten-free food was great. Have you found anything else? I'd love to hear about... -
I haven't taken such a long trip, but I regularly take the train from NYC to Boston. At least down the NE corridor, there's virtually nothing gluten-free on Amtrak (I think potato chips are it). Even salad w/ chicken has wheat (I think b/c of the chicken). It sounds like the other folk who posted did some investigation, but I'd definitely recommend bringing...
