  1. While I've personally never heard of a wheat toxicity, it doesn't mean there isn't such a thing. The not testing you right now part is what I don't understand. If you are having a reaction to wheat or the protein in wheat called gliadin, then you HAVE to be consuming it for the antibodies to be present. If I were you, I'd get a celiac blood test panel...
  2. Carrie, Question about the negative Celiac blood panel... Was she within normal limits of all the tests or was any of it positive. Reason I ask is that sometimes if the IgA and tTg are normal regardless of an elevated IgG the results could be read as negative for Celiac's disease. But an elevated IgG could indicate a gluten intolerance that has not...
  3. Sharon, I am so sorry to hear that you have had such a horrible experience. I can totally relate becasue I was given the same run around by my doctor AND my BIL ped. We, too were sent to an endocronologist to determine why he was not growing. It took an intestinal crisis and a 12 day hospital stay for us to figure out his gluten intolerance. I look back...
  4. Ok, googled 'gelatin' and came up with this website: Open Original Shared Link OK, now I didn't know that! Learned something new today! Priscilla
  5. It is a dliemma... what do you do when you KNOW someone may have the genetic predisposition for gluten intolerance. I am facing that right now as 1 of my 4 children has developed a gluten intolerance. What do I do about the other three? Be retroactive and wait for symptoms before treating or be proactive and preventative and not give cause for the...
  6. Tropical Sprue is not the same as Celiac Sprue! This medical site, Open Original Shared Link, gives a defenition and the diagnosis for it. If they ran blood tests as described above, they were not looking for anti-bodies to gliadin. He needs to be re-tested for the right thing! Priscilla
  7. It's pretty much like everyone said already... if you have elevated anti-bodies to gliadin your body sees it as a poison. If you keep injesting it, it could fatally harm you. Ultimately, it's a choice you have to make... just like smoking, drinking, doing drugs... people know it's bad for them but they choose to do it anyways. The choice will be yours...
  8. I would tend to agree that as of right now, there is nothing that a gene test in and of itself can tell you. If you have the one of the genes, you MAY get it, if you don't have one of the genes you might STIll get it... The gene testing is not specific enough because there are many people who have obvious gluten intolerance and that have symptoms disappear...
  9. You might get a variety of responses.... if you are adamant about having a 'gold standard' diagnosis then I would demand a scheduled biopsy very soon. If your son does have an auto immune response to gluten and he continues to consume gluten, he is in jeopardy. IF anything is gonna show up, it has to be while he's consuming gluten. So you need to get your...
  10. Although I have not heard of that correaltion, I would like to comment on it. I believe that there is a whole group of people that the medical community is missing the boat on. It is the group that tests positive for a gluten intolerance (presence of 'tons' of anti-bodies to gliadin) but have not yet developed the damage in the small intestines to give...
  11. Christine, Welcome! It can be so overwhelming at first... everything I was used to feeding my son seemed to have gluten in it. I've been on this gluten-free journey for only 10 months and I still learn new things everyday. I am not a scientist or a doctor... and my understanding of the whole process is very basic... What I understand now that...
  12. I went in search of gluten-free rice milk as well and bought: Pacific brand Rice All Natural, non-dairy beverage. It says right on the front of the carton: -Lactose Free -Cholesterol Free -Gluten Free Enriched with Calcium, Vitamins A & D Low Fat Plain Got it at my local Ralph's (Kroeger) (edited: saw it at Vons (Safeway), too) Mom...
  13. I can tell you that my son started a broader diet when he was 8 months old, until then it was rice cereal and fruits and veggies. At 8 months he could pick things up and put them into his mouth to mash.. and I 'think' I might have started graham crackers... don't really remember. Anyways, his weight and height started to drop at that point. It was subtle...
  14. Can the gluten that cows consume get into their milk? I have seen several threads and debates on the topic of gluten in human breast milk... some say, yes gluten can enter the milk and others say no. I have heard of mothers who breast fed and swear that when they went gluten-free their colicky babies got better. If gluten can get into breastmilk couldn...
  15. Did a search on google for these... first looking at salivary stones... salivary stones is not what you are describing. What you are describing is called:
  16. The Swedish study noted that: Since it was only a 40% chance, that does leave another 60% who don't fit the pattern... but what I found most interesting was the causal relationship between an environmental or seasonal trigger, like a flu or virus.... children born in the summer months spend their first 9 months during the "flu" season. Interesting...
  17. Posted this on another board I'm on... Open Original Shared Link My developed celiac disease before he was 2 and he was born in June. Interesting! Priscilla So. Calif.
  18. Kirst4588, You are a fortunate mom! That your little one has been diagnosed without having to experience a gluten crisis is a miracle. If he had positive blood work and has developed anti-bodies to gliadin, then he is definitely gluten intolerant. He may not have a positive biopsy, that does NOT mean that he can eat gluten. It just means that his autoimmune...
  19. Thanks guys! Very helpful info, Thomas. I will try to make sure I give it time...
  20. Thanks for your responses... am going to experiment with removing gluten and dairy from my diet... then reintroduce and look for reaction... Thanks!
  21. It has been nice to see others with the same issues. Makes us feel like we're not alone. I have a 3 1/2 year old boy that has been gluten-free for 5 months now. Has gained almost 5 lbs. My son is also a "picky eater". Always has been, part personality, part physical. I know now that he didn't want to eat much before and only liked to eat a lot of a...
  22. I'm new to this as well, I also have a 3 1/2 year old boy. In response to did they know about Celiac's 20 - 30 years ago, I had a conversation with a girlfriend whose 34 year old brother was labeled a Celiac baby... they put him on a special formula and told the family he would grow out of it. He has always been thin, prone to illness and has had stomache...
  23. I am new to celiac disease and new to message boards... so bear with. Long story: (for short to the point move on to bottom) I strongly believe that my 3 1/2 year old has celiac disease. He had what you call a "Celiac Crisis" in Oct '03 in which he was hospitalized for 12 days with vomiting and severe abdominal pain, in which they did every test and...
  24. I am new to this site and new to the gluten-free lifestyle... came on to see if there were other people out there with similar issues. My 3 1/2 year-old son is the one were dealing with... he had a "Celiac crisis" in October of 2003 which had him hospitalized for 12 days in 2 different hospitals. The first had a positive anit-gliadin blood test come back...
