ARCHIVED Did I Do Everything In The Wrong Order Already?
Eriella replied to Dru's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Although it is theoretically possible for you just to be allergic to oats, I highly doubt it. What I would do is call your doctor and explain that you feel horrible eating oats and ask if you can switch to wheat. If you also feel horrible on wheat, then it is gluten. You should be able to get a gluten-intolerance diagnosis based on positive dietary response... -
Thanks for all of the advice-- stress does make my symptoms much worse and it has been a very stressful week. I can't believe I didn't think of that! I have been healthy for most of the summer when I was cooking for myself, despite working a high stress job. I ate very basic and unprocessed foods with very few gluten-replacement products. For the past...

ARCHIVED Going To The Ball! How To Not Get Sick By Midnight?
Eriella replied to Dawnsister's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
Hello, What I would do is call wherever the catering services number for the venue (ie the Belevue), and explain that you have a gluten intolerance and if they would be able to accommodate you. They should be able to with no problem. Then, the week before the event, let the group planning the event know that you have dietary issues and have already spoken... -
ARCHIVED Here Are The Test Results
Eriella replied to chrissid7's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I looked up the lab and the IgG is out of the reference range. This means welcome to the club! -
ARCHIVED Here Are The Test Results
Eriella replied to chrissid7's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Do you have the ranges that the lab provided? Each lab has a slightly different normal range, and without seeing them I can't help you. -
ARCHIVED Caramel
Eriella replied to jaten's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Most caramel coloring is safe, and a lot of caramel candies are safe as well (the ones my grandmother makes are). Carmel color comes from the chemical reaction of heating sugar, sugars is gluten free (but not necessarily casein free); thus, true caramel is gluten free. However, artificial crap tends not to be safe, the real thing, or anywhere near as good... -
ARCHIVED Can't Figure Out If It Is Dairy Or Gluten
Eriella replied to Nic's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
To me it sounds like gluten. Although it could be either or both. Most cheeses are low-lactose, so it would surprise me if you were reacting to them (unless you have casein issues). Your deli meat or tortillas might contain gluten, so that could be the culprit. Also, it could just be that you are healing. I would recommend going 100% gluten free, casein... -
I also LOVE eating out, and I still do (sort of). Some things I have found is that when I call ahead and explain the situation, most nice restaurants can help you out. I also find that if I am at a restaurant where they are clueless, I don't chance it. I watch people eat and then go home and heat up leftovers. Some restaurants are great, others not so much...

Hello all, I am returning back to college after the summer break and since last week I had to go back to eating at the dining hall (my school won't let me opt out of the meal plan), and for the past 36 hours I have felt horrible! I went from feeling normal last week to not digesting my food, feeling like a pit in my stomach, body aches, attention problems...

ARCHIVED What's Safe At The Grand Central Station Food Court?
Eriella posted a topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I just found out that I get to go to the UN in New York on a class trip and I am super excited! After we are done, the professor told us that we will stop at the Grand Central Station food court to get dinner before we head home. Does anyone have any recommendations on what is safe and good? Thanks in advance!! -
ARCHIVED Teenager Going Gluten Free?
Eriella replied to cyberprof's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hello, Without a firm diagnosis, it is really hard to get schools to be accommodating and friends to get it. However, I have a diagnosis based on dietary response and family history alone and everything has worked out well for me. The good news is, pretty much everyone in my peer group (I am in college) has heard of it. When they see me getting some... -
ARCHIVED More Cheesecake Suggestions
Eriella replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I did this when I had to make dessert for everyone! What I did was use vanilla wafers for everyone and an Envirokidz animal cracker for mine. -
ARCHIVED What Are Your Family-friendly, Gluten-free Dinner Ideas?
Eriella replied to dandelionmom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Wow-- No offense, but I wouldn't want to cook in your house. What I would make is a lot of rice pasta, but that does get to be boring fast. I would also make omelets, taco bar (w/ refried beans), eggplant pizzas, vegetable soup, chili, quesadillas, stuffed peppers, and nachos. I hope this helps! -
What I do is that I am very honest with my co-workers and bosses. Say that your gut is healing and you are learning where the evil food companies are hiding the gluten in your food. Then be honest, say that if, and when, you mess up, you need to go NOW. Explain celiac to them and that your body freaks out and tries to get rid of the poison as fast as it can...

ARCHIVED Celiac Disease + Anorexia Nervosa?
Eriella replied to dizzynik242's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I don't have an eating disorder, but I am/was of the school of thought that if it made me sick, I wasn't going to eat it. Because my doctor all but told me it was in my head, I thought it was, and tried to control it mentally, which in turn caused my problem to become in my head. When everything I ate made me sick, I stopped eating it (and only ate in very... -
Dear pinky-- I get that it is hard! In a lot of ways, a celiac diagnosis plain sucks. I still can not look at or smell a pizza without tearing up because I want it so bad and no gluten free pizza tastes as good. I am in college and unfortunately get to watch all of my co-workers eat my favorite food while I eat plain, undressed, crouton-less salad. Now...

Hello, My big trigger was also abdominal pain from eating "bread". I landed in the ER twice and had several emergency doctors visits. I would suggest asking your doctor to order a blood test and then try going gluten free for 2-3 months (and yes-- this is extremely difficult, but possible, while eating out and cooking gourmet. It gives a new challenge...

ARCHIVED Just A Few Questions
Eriella replied to karma's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
Hello, As far as books, I didn't have time to read any when I got dx-ed, so I have no recommendations. With labels, look for an allergy warning label that says wheat and read the ingredients to look for barley, wheat, oats, and rye (and then re-read them at home to make sure you didn't miss anything). Then, also look for hidden gluten in: modified... -
ARCHIVED Gluten And Dairy Free Birth Control
Eriella replied to gfmolly's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
According to an earlier post, Kariva (which is the generic of Mircette), is Gluten-free Casein-free. However, I was unable to verify that information. Also, read this: Open Original Shared Link Have you considered an IUD? It is more effective, safer, and no need to remember every day. -
Also try making Nutrition Kitchen's Organic Soy Pasta for dinner. For a sauce use sauteed veggies (I use tomatoes, broccoli, and carrots with garlic and basil in olive oil) and drink a lot of water. The next morning only eat fruit in the morning (as much of it as you want) and drink lots of water/clear liquids. You should go by noon. The other trick...

Well... they way I always get out of serving is by telling the DA that I actively campaign against him and everyone his political party. That normally works ;-). If you don't have that reason, write a letter saying that you are currently suffering from an undiagnosed medical condition that you can't get treated for because you don't have insurance. Be...

I think that there has been some misinterpretation of what I said/wrote and what I meant. If you are too sick to serve, by all means, get a doctor to get you out of it. It isn't fair for you to be in pain, nor is it fair to everyone else in the trial to have to deal with it. I also believe that you should be honest about your symptoms (to your doctor...

ARCHIVED My Boyfriends Mom Glutened Me
Eriella replied to kml55's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I completely understand. I had some really rough patches when I first went gluten free with my bf's family, and now they get it and are wonderful (thank goodness). It was all my bf having a heart to heart. My mom gave me 3 pieces of advice that were so simple and worked, "You are there for the company, not for the food", "You can choose your boyfriend... -
I hate to sound like a lawyer, but it is none of the government's business what your health issues are, and celiac is not a reason to get out of jury duty. People that have celiac disease, gluten intolerance, and the like are physically able to serve (once they have healed). That doesn't mean that they want to, but they can. If you say that you can't serve...

Hello, First of all, I am sorry you are having such a hard time. There are some people who are wonderful about this and others who aren't. Some things which might help are watching/showing your parents these: They give a good overview. Sometimes it is just is other people saying it. If you are 100% gluten free and have healed, your chances...
