My bloodwork came back negative and my biopsy came back with no signs of damage, but my doctor lists me as gluten intolerant based on my dietary response. So I would say that dietary response is proof enough. I too was gluten free before I went to get the blood test and biopsy, but I felt so good that there was not a chance I would eat gluten again just for test results. I went from 9 years of feeling so ill that my general doctor had me tested for lyme disease, lupus, r.a., and cancer of every type to not feeling ill every single day.
If you do want to get other testing done there is also a company called Kimball Genetics that does it(blood and cheek swab). I know they were recently at the Gluten Free Vendor Fair at SUNY Farmingdale. I've never been tested by them, but did contact them for information and they seem very professional. Maybe somebody else on here has used them.

Sorry for the confusion. For some reason whenever I try to type a topic in all caps it comes out in sentence case. I was just trying to find out if anyone else was in Alpha Omicron Pi out there. Their abbreviation is AOII. They use two i's at the end to symbolize the pi, but since it didn't come out in all caps it looked odd and I couldn't figure out how to get rid of the message afterwards.

My reply from Smashbox:
Dear Beth, here is the most updated list of items:
Gluten can be found in products that conatin wheat/rye/barley derivatives. Most smashbox products do not conatin gluten, however the follwing products do:

Random but I thought I would check?

My fave is DeBoles. Open Original Shared Link. I know you can get it in Stop and Shop and Whole Foods. Even my husband likes it and he doesn't need to be gluten free. Definitely better in taste and texture than Tinkyada. And they have so many different varities - even a no boil lasgana noodle. I use the rice ones not the corn.

Could you tell me what type of cat food you use? One of my cats has the same problem. When he uses the litter box in the basement I can smell it upstairs!

First, I want to thank you for supporting your husband and child in their gluten free life. I know it's hard. I know it's frustrating and scary and annoying and overwhelming and irritating. But it gets better.
I would hope that your husband would take a more proactive approach to his food. Maybe he should be on this site too. Does he ever go grocery shopping with you? Maybe you could plan some meals together. Get him involved. Let him see the effort that goes into it.
Your food doesn't have to be boring or flavorless. Ever. If you want any recipes I would be happy to share some of mine. I shop at Whole Foods so you would be able to find the ingredients. I take regular recipes and tweak them to be gluten free. Right now I am thinking of a wonderful pan fried gnocchi with bacon and peas recipe from Fine Cooking. Whole Foods actually has fresh gluten free gnocchi. YUM!
Take heart. Even if your husband doesn't want the support of these boards, you should join us.

They used to state that none of their products contained gluten. It looks like that has changed.
I still inquire about anything I'm interested in using because manufacturers can and do change their formulations and add in new products, too.
I am going to contact them directly about this. I'll post their answer when I get one.

I was just about to buy their That's A Wrap Mascara from Sephora, but the description states -
"That's A Wrap mascara contains advanced ingredients and wheat proteins that deeply moisturize and create a natural film around each lash making them appear longer, thicker, and fuller, as it conditions and moisturizes each lash."
Does anyone else use Smashbox? I'm so worried about the other products I use by them now. Are they not a gluten free brand?

Where do I sign up? lol.
I have a wonderful doctor, but he's in Nassau County. Dr. Gary J. Schwartz. The link to the practice's website is Open Original Shared Link. It might not be too far for you though.

Here's a link to one of my favorite dishes from Fine Cooking magazine. It's salmon over cannellini beans, kale and bacon. So good. Tastes like you got it from a restaurant.
Open Original Shared Link
I get most of my recipes from either their magazines or the Fine Cooking cookbooks. With a Whole Foods close by it's really easy to find gluten free ingredients or substitutions so you can make any recipe that you want to.

I've found that by me (on Long Island, NY) Whole Foods is actually cheaper on a lot of products than Stop and Shop. So it's not as bad as it's made out to be. I like the variety at Whole Foods and the fact that they sell lots of gluten free products. Less worry for me. I also find it to be so much cleaner and the food fresher than the regular grocery stores. That's worth any extra money for me.
By the way, Whole Foods is buying Wild Oats.

Hi all! I found a book at the used bookstore and am pretty much desperate to lose weight. I'm going to start "south beaching" tomorrow. No one has posted for awhile. Is it working, is it not worth trying?? Just wondering if I should give it a shot. Let me know how you are all doing? Thanks
Hi,
I keep saying I'm going to post and then don't. Sorry. My ulcers have been acting up and so I can't eat a lot of freshand/or acidic fruits and vegetables right now. I also have to be careful with how much protein I eat because it seems to aggravate them if I eat too much. So it's been modified (really modified) South Beach for me. I do plan on doing it full fledge when I am feeling better.
The diet is definitely worth trying. I haven't gained any more weight and didn't even gain back the three pounds I initially lost.
I hope you give it a try. Keep me posted.

Please, please, please watch how much advil, alleve and excedrin you take. I used to be in constant pain prior to going gluten free - abdominal pain, joint pain, terrible headaches and took tons of over the counter pain relievers to get through it. Well now I have three almost bleeding ulcers because of it. I am lucky that I do not need surgery (yet). I am on a very restrictive diet to help them heal. Like we need any more restrictions on what we can eat. So please be careful of what you take. Tylenol is ok, but the other NSAIDS are what you should watch out for. If I can keep one person from going through the excruiating pain of an ulcer I would be very happy.
I hope you feel better.

Ooohh - the Schooner. My mom loves that place. I just hope they can accomodate me. I think I'll email them and see what they have to say. Thanks for the suggestion.

Hi Everyone,
My mom's 70th birthday is coming up in August. This is going to be a really hard one for her because my dad just passed in February. Orginally we were going to have a big 70th birthday/40th anniversary party for them but we cancelled that. I still want to do something special for her because she could use it. My mom said she wants to go to Freeport for dinner on her birthday, so I want to make that happen for her. Anyone had a successful gluten free dinner there? Any suggestions in general about eating at a seafood place?
Thanks.

I feel like I need to do the extra week on Phase 1 because I haven't been taking this as seriously as I should. The other problem is that my husband hasn't been allowed to eat for two days due to medical testing so I've been trying to make things that don't have strong smells. (Don't want to torture him.) I've unfortunately been eating a lot of bagels and rice. Now I need to buckle down and start over. A fresh start. I love how forgiving South Beach is about the little slip-ups we all have. I just feel that if I don't get myself under control now I'll never make it in Phase 2. Last time I did South Beach I was really good about it and lost so much weight. So here's to a clean slate.
SunnyDyRain - welcome to South Beach! This is a great diet because it actually teaches you how to eat a healthy balanced diet. Nothing weird. Just eating right. I promise you won't get bored on it and you will never be hungry. And you can eat more than just meat and veggies - fruits, nuts, good carbs and even desserts!

Ladies,
I've been inspired to look into the South Beach Diet. Just today I posted a plea for help because in the year and a half that i've been diagnosed with Celiac, I've gained a whopping 40 lbs., and I'm miserable. I'm so happy to hear that other Celiacs are finding a diet that works. My mother was just telling me about the SBD today, so this must be fate!!
I'm anxious to go and find some info about it and hopefully start within the next couple of days. Thanks so much for the recipes! I'll keep looking for added comments on the board.
Mary
P.S. I'm new to this messaging thing, and I don't quite understand the "thread" that was mentioned in the writings, but I'm game to try and figure it all out.
Hi Mary,
Welcome to South Beach! Is this your first time on the diet? I'm on week two of Phase 1, but I am extending it for another week because I wasn't as good as I should have been. We had a bbq over the week and let's just say the diet was the last thing on my mind. I thought that I would be bad for that one day and then go right back to eating right. Well, that was a nice idea in theory. We had tons of chips and ice cream, etc left over so of course, we ate it. Now I feel really guilty. At least I didn't gain the three pounds I lost back.
I am going to try to post every day because I feel like it keeps me honest on the diet. Hope you all don't get bored with me.
Beth
PS - The thread comment means that we are going to continue to post here instead of doing this through private email. This way anyone who wants to join in can.

What are My Own Meals and where do I get them? I live in Wyoming and have never heard of them!
My Own Meals are ready to heat pre-made meals like Lean Cuisine or any of those other frozen meals except they don't have to be frozen or even refrigerated. You can buy them through the Gluten Free Pantry (www.gluten free.com) or through their own site (Open Original Shared Link). Some of them can be bland so I always salt them.
-
How about stocking up on some snacks like larabars, glutino pretzels, etc? You could also get a few pre-made meals from My Own Meals. They are gluten free and don't need refrigeration. Just heat them up in a microwave. I'd make sure I had some comfort food. Maybe your favorite gluten free cookies? How about a mess kit? Target has one for $26. It has a cup, bowl, dish and pan all in one kit and is easily packed up.
Hope you don't need any of these things.

Ok. So I'm having a slight obsession with toast right now. I haven't given in to the craving but last night it was all I could think about. Can't wait for Phase 1 to be over and to get rid of the cravings. I am happy to say that I've lost 2 pounds already. YAY! Which is what is keeping me going.
Today's plan:
Breakfast - one egg over easy and canadian bacon.
Snack- mozzarella stick
Lunch - tuna salad made with low fat yogurt instead of mayo with some cumin, garlic and lemon juice added to it and a few slices of avocado on the side.
Snack - mozzarella stick
Dinner - don't know yet. I always decide right before I leave work for the day. I never know what I am going to be in the mood for.
No exercising yet. I have a few almost bleeding ulcers and the doctor won't let me exercise until they heal.
Have a great day everyone!

If you can get it in time the Derma | Style by Lumiport Portable Acne Light Pen works wonders. I swear by mine which I got from drugstore.com. It seriously gets rid of pimples quickly and was worth every penny I paid for it. If you Google the name maybe an actual store might sell them.
Good luck.
