I am glad to hear you are feeling so much better! Just wanted to send you that info about iodine in foods. It was in an article about Hashimotos, however I am betting it could be helpful for DH too. Here is the link: Open Original Shared Link I helped a chef on celiac.com who had DH by advising he take Burdock Root. This may or may not work for...
  2. Just wanted to say that I found some info for my friend who has Hashimotos as well as celiac--he was having a very hard time due to the cold weather. By looking it up on the Internet we discovered that there are various foods that are safe ways to get a small amount of iodine in one's diet--and other foods he has to completely avoid like kale and cabbage...
  3. No need to see an allergist. You can just look up salicylic acid online and try going without and see if it helps or not. That is all an allergist would be able to do anyway, have you try it out. There is no test for it otherwise than trial and error. There is info on it called the Feingold Diet--plus just google foods that are salicylic acid free and you...
  4. Another cause for itchiness, with flaky, crusty swollen skin is salicylate sensitivity. Something you might want to look into... Bea
  5. Thanks to you both for such quick and apt responses! I'll get the capsules. I don't know if the food coloring would bother me or not. Hadn't even considered that possibility. Its nice to know I can pour out the contents however and have them that way without the food coloring. Again about the gluten free aspects. Seems they don't want to be bothered...
  6. Hi, I have recently discovered that if I take diphenhydramine hydrochloride after eating something I shouldn't (like bananas or something with salicylic acid), I can sleep plus my skin in my ears and nethers are far less dry, itchy, swollen and scabby. I looked it up and its basically benedryl. So,does anyone know if benedryl is gluten free?? In...
  7. it could be a detoxing effect or it could be dermatitus herpetiformis. I'd keep an eye on it. If it continues to bother you you might want to get it tested.
  8. you are lucky you can eat glutino baked goods. For me they give me a migraine... You might want to experiment with making baked goods yourself. Some can be very tasty. I personally like making pancakes using cooked brown rice as part of the mix. Bea
  9. I actually got a migraine a couple of hours after walking through a pizza place where they were making fresh pizzas. I used the restroom and then left. This has happened a couple of other times too. Bakeries are out for me. Probably for you too. Its the gluten dust in the air. Sheesh!!
  10. Thanks for the insight. Its a relief we won't have to do this very long. I am certain it will not only give her dh but also fog up her brain etc. I still have to find a dermatologist who knows about DH testing. Whoever checked her at Kaiser recently obviously didn't know what he/she was doing. The Health Now clinic we took my mother to today wouldn...
  11. Again thanks for the intelligent reply. Fortunately when my mother has fallen she hasn't broken anything. She seems to bounce back with no problem. She in fact is still very nimble and she has aged better than many. I think this is common actually with celiac. Our bones often don't get brittle with age and we often retain our youthfulness. Nevertheless...
  12. Thanks for the quick reply Skylark. I will have to figure out who is a DH specialist around here. We live in Los Gatos near San Jose in the SF Bay area. We are going to see a DC at a holistic Sunnyvale clinic known for dealing with celiac tomorrow to get some advice. He's not an AMA guy however, which I think will be needed to get through to my sister...
  13. My elderly mother (95 soon to be 96) has what I think is DH and borderline low thyroid plus celiac and I think some evidence of Sjogren's syndrome. My sister the nurse thinks I am nuts however. The low thyroid is a medical fact as well as the past itchy eyes and now itchy gums. She also has itchy skin with outbreaks although in other locations her skin looks...
  14. Hi, I can understand your distress. There is so much fear and misunderstanding out there. However as I understand it, a gluten free diet is much healthier in general for nearly everyone. Read the book DANGEROUS GRAINS for corroboration (check Amazon for used copies). You could however be gluten free (gluten-free) and still eat say too much sugar or fats...
  15. Going off grains for a while might be a good idea for those having acid reflux. I think for those who tend to get allergies (not just celiac) its a good idea to rotate one's diet, especially if one eats grains. You can actually make a lot of breads/muffins etc. with ground up almonds or sunflower seeds (assuming you aren't allergic). Eggs help hold them together...
  16. Its likely she is allergic or intolerant of some other foods she is eating/drinking/exposed to. You might do well going on an elimination diet. Have her eat very simple food at first. If she still has a problem, change the diet to where she does not have a problem. Avoid the common allergens. A cave man or paleo diet might help. In some cases salicylic acid...
  17. Hi Mushroom, I do think this salicylate thing and celiac or gluten intolerance often goes together. It amazes me how interrelated all this stuff is. As an aside to you, I still don't tolerate sugar very well. But now I understand why honey is even worse (high in salicylates). Agave gives me horrific migraines--which makes me wonder if it doesn't have...
  18. From another point of view I wanted to mention other causes for skin problems such as other allergies or sensitivities like salicylic acid sensitivity as a possible contributing cause for your skin problems. For instance I get a rash with swelling and crusty itchy patches. Sometimes it blisters if it gets really bad. I also get hive like painful, itchy...
  19. Thanks for the web suggestion Skylark! Do you have any specific articles on auto immune problems that you would recommend? It is hard to know what really is what medically with celiac and auto immune conditions period--especially for us lay people--plus it seems difficult for many doctors. Auto immune conditions seem so counter intuitive if you get what...
  20. Skylark--thank you for your suggestion about the vit. C. Only thing though is that I think I may be allergic to ascorbic acid--and I know I am very allergic to citrus fruit. However I don't have to take uva ursi constantly--and don't. I just have it now and then. The dandelion and marshmallow root are wonderful regular herbs for me however. But even with...
  21. Yay! I just found out that dandelion, cleavers and marshmallow root and uva ursi are all OK and actually very good for detoxing, clearing the skin, intestines, liver, urinary tract etc. Plus as far as I can tell, no salicylates in any of them... Though uva ursi shouldn't be used if one has high blood pressure--plus its debated whether to take it either...
  22. Hi to you all again. Jenn--I can relate to your frustration with the SCD diet. It didn't quite fit me either. Suddenly discovering you have a nut allergy must be frustrating. I too am terribly allergic to all nuts as well as sesame seeds. That is why I started using sunflower seeds as a flour replacement instead. This isn't SCD acceptable however....
  23. "Aged cheese is rich in tyramine and other amines that can act as neurotransmitters. I wonder if that's what got you?"--Skylark I apologize if what I have written here seems a little too self involved. However, I think it is possible this line of enquiry could possibly be of help to others... I feel like in some ways I am once again the proverbial canary...
  24. Hi. Just noticing amongst my celiac and multiple allergies and sensitivities that eating (even organic aged) cheddar cheese is still a no no for me. I woke up with my left elbow aching after eating some organic cheddar cheese last night. Fool that I was, I felt compelled to have some more. I then went for a walk and felt sore, woozy and tired all...
  25. Thanks--it is very helpful. I also looked up Sue Dengate's blog. She wrote Fed Up With Food Additives. She suggests some of us are also fruit sensitive--which I may well be. I did not react well to that banana. I was OK with it the first day, but the second day with a banana was too much. Maybe I will be able to have fruit say once or twice a week. Who knows...
