  1. This is so right! I never get sick anymore either--except for the occasional CC with gluten and now sometimes with high to medium salicylic acid foods. My teeth no longer get caries either and my gums are beautiful rather than sickly. Hair ditto--now shine, body and curl. People comment on how great my skin looks, and like another poster said, mosquitos...
  2. Yup. Mosquitos don't like me any more. I used to be their favorite treat! My hair now shines and has body and even curls if its short enough and it also doesn't fall out all the time--whereas for most of my life my hair was thin, no body and lifeless. I thought it was normal to lose a cluster of hair strands each time I washed my hair or brushed it...
  3. Richard is so right. I can now eat eggs whereas they used to give me migraines. Ditto with my partner who now can eat onions and garlic with no problem. For some of us however being completely gluten-free can also uncover other hidden food allergies and sensitivities. You will likely need to heal your gut for a while in any case--so its often important...
  4. I agree. Its both frustrating and rewarding, and in perspective, still less time than our grandmothers spent cooking (usually). For me its a little more challenging making creative meals than for many here since I am also salicylic acid sensitive, which means no spices except garlic, onion, parsley, leeks... not to speak of a very limited diet in the vegetable...
  5. hi Helen. Welcome to the celiac.com forum! Its likely very worth it for you to try out eating gluten free. The best gluten free diet, especially initially, is to eat veggies, whole grain rice, meat and water. You have to avoid what is called cross contamination (CC) from gluten to really get the full benefit. It may also be that you are suffering...
  6. I am pretty much that sensitive. However I am also very sensitive to salicylic acid which really complicates attempting to eat out. Its a pain really, but after a while you get used to it. I either bring my own food to events, or have people come over to eat with me.
  7. I have used Aleve for CC induced migraines. I find it really helps. I wouldn't just use it willy nilly of course. Just using baking soda in water really helps me too. Blending fresh veggies with plenty of celery and parsley in it can be a powerful remedy. Taking L-glutamine on an empty stomach also helps quite a lot by soothing and healing the villi...
  8. Welcome to the forum! Your proposed diet sounds interesting. I don't know how many here go off protein to get better. I know for me it would not work. Which is not to say it wouldn't work at least for a while for you and others. Eventually however you would likely need to eat some protein just to be healthy and not fall apart. It may be that some...

    ARCHIVED Joint Pain

Hi Judy. For years I used to think I was just allergic to the wheat family. I discovered however when I went off all trace gluten (and I mean ALL--including shampoos, detergent, floor cleaners etc.) my joint pain went away, unless I actually was out of joint--plus it greatly improved my overall health and ability to stay well and not get every stray cold...

    ARCHIVED Joint Pain

NIghtshades in themselves aren't necessarily bad for everybody. I similarly cannot handle eating tomatoes and peppers for instance--but the cause is different. I am sensitive to salicylic acid (SA)--and tomatoes and peppers and many potatoes are very high in SA. However I can eat peeled white potatoes, since they are low in SA. Go figure!! Some have problems...
  11. Many thanks! I just checked online and discovered that there are now some water based homeopathics out there these days. one is King Bio. another is SafeCareOTC and /sprayology. Have you tried any of them? So far I could not figure out if Nature's Sunshine has any of these water based homeopathics. I will need to check further to figure that out. Unfortunately...

    ARCHIVED Joint Pain

If you are having neuro symptoms, its really important to be completely gluten free in order to get relief. I have read that elsewhere that those with neuro symptoms are more sensitive than the average gluten intolerant person; given my own situation I believe it to be utterly true. This means toiletries, including shampoos, detergents, makeup, lip balm...
  13. The last several months I have gone off almost all herbs due to discovering I am salicylic acid intolerant (SA) as well as continuing to be corn, and lactose intolerant in addition to being extremely sensitive to gluten. I still have nerve pain and resultant frequent difficulty sleeping that I would like to better address as well as detox issues since...

    ARCHIVED Joint Pain

I think "domestic activist" is on to something. It could be CC with gluten that is still bothering you. However it also could be that you are sensitive to something else in addition to gluten. A good friend of mine for instance has to be casein free to feel OK. He also has a couple of hard to get rid of bacteria that have chronically messed him up. He...
  15. Five years a go blood tests determined that the myelin sheath on my nerves had degraded down to 50%. At the time my doc. said I was also low on B-1 even though I was taking B vitamins. I then started taking co-enzyme B complex, and noticed a positive difference within 2 weeks--my heart stopped racing. However it took another year and a half before I discovered...
  16. Just from the top of it I would suspect the cran/grape juice--and the cranberry with other acidic fruits like oranges or strawberries. Personally I would simplify your fruit intake to just one kind of fruit at a time until you get to the bottom of this. It could also be the quantity of the fruit that could be the problem. I doubt its the...

    ARCHIVED Grr...

And don't forget, some of us were hippies and sds'ers fighting the war in Vietnam and changing social values, exploring spirituality, alternate economies, philosophies, creativity, sexuality, lifestyles etc. For me, I started using herbs back in the early 70's and diet and health. Pretty early in the piece I figured out I that I had an "allergy" to the...

am the same way. will be 62 soon! but still young in many ways. Young or old, having an open mind or not seems to be a personal rather than a generational decision.

    ARCHIVED Grr...

Unfortunately the level of denial in many celiac or severe gluten intolerant families often is astronomical. It often takes a lot for someone to begin to notice the relation between health and what they eat, especially something as extreme as what we have to do to be healthy. And many, after seeing "us" and what we go through, don't want to be bothered...
  20. They are pricey, but they can be a helpful tool.
  21. Unfortunately what Skylark suggests seems to be true--certainly it is the case for me. I am a true "canary". I tend to be low on B-1, not B-12. But taking a B complex is good in either case since it helps keep a better balance--B vitamins are essential for a heathy nervous system. And unfortunately having celiac or severe gluten intolerance makes absorbing...
  22. Hi Lizard, Just read your post here. I too was on the SCD for a while. It helped a little but then again not really. From your list of "good" foods that you gave above, I wonder if you don't have salicylic acid sensitivity. SA is not just in aspirin -- it is in a lot of fruits and vegetables and herbs -- especially in the skins. I was making myself sick...
  23. Hi, It sounds like you are doing a lot of good things. I can understand however how all those treatments can really add up. I personally spent a fortune on all kinds of healers and massage etc. The thing to do is to try and get at the bottom of what it is that is going wrong. The problem with fibro however is that the causes for it are diverse and difficult...
  24. I have gone through this, go through this. In time it gets a little easier. Thank god I now have someone where this just isn't an issue. However I remember this dilemma well. It is easy to feel socially ostracized and misunderstood. However there are ways around that plus ways to make it into a virtue. Like the last poster suggested, think of alternative...
  25. Welcome to the forum! In these pages you will likely receive much good advice and support. It is nice to hear too that you have a wonderful husband and two daughters. I just wanted to tell you that there are many here (myself included) that have had MS like neurological symptoms (as well as out and out MS) that have had their symptoms go away or at...
