ARCHIVED Importance Of Biopsys
Carriefaith replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Every doctor seems to diagnose and deal with celiac disease differently. To diagnose, some just do blood tests, some do blood tests and a biopsy, and few still do the dietary challenge but it has been done. In my opinon, I don't think that a follow up biopsy is necessay if you are following the diet and feeling better. Very rarely celiacs can get refactory... -
Wow that sounds like fun! I've always wanted to try mountain biking but there are no mountains where I live

ARCHIVED So Confused Now!
Carriefaith replied to JacobsMom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I agree maybe the doctor meant that his other blood tests were inconclusive before and he choose to do those specific tests because they were the ones that were high and positive before. -
This is really quick and easy... Last night I just put a salmon fillet on tinfoil in a pan poured Kraft BBQ sauce on it and sprinkled chili powder on top and then baked it in the oven. It was very yummy!

I've read that too, and it is also very underdiagnosed in Africa.

ARCHIVED Going On A Cruise Saturday!
Carriefaith replied to LqrMan's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I hope you have fun on the cruise! I'm glad to hear that you have had such good experiences with those companies. Do you recommend one over the other? -
Yes, some people have intolerances aside from celiac. Lactaid doesn't work for me either. Although I've never been tested for casein intolerance I believe that I may be casein intolerant due to my violent dairy reactions and the fact that lactaid doesn't work.

ARCHIVED Another Newbie W/lots Of Questions
Carriefaith replied to ShortStuff2309's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I know that can be confusing at first. The safe list says you can have it and the forbidden list says you can't have it When you see stuff like that, then you know that you have to double check the ingredients. For example you can find salad dressings, soups, pure instant or ground coffee, cold cuts, and yogurt that are gluten free and not gluten free... -
ARCHIVED Ana Test And Gluten Intolerance
Carriefaith replied to AnnieMarie's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
gluten ingestion can result in bone damage since gluten damages the villi in the intestine that absorb calcium and vitamin D and all the other nutrients involed with bone health. I dislike it when they do that and don't investigate, well at least you know what is causing your problems now. I'm glad that you are feeling better now -
You are right. The villi in the small intestine contain the enzymes to break down lactose, starch, and sucrose... The lactose enzyme is located at the tip of the villi, sucrose in the middle, and maltose and the bottom. When the villi are damaged due to gluten ingestion by people with celiac disease, the enzymes are not as abundant or hardley there at all...

ARCHIVED Ana Test And Gluten Intolerance
Carriefaith replied to AnnieMarie's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Do you know the name of the test that came back positive? Did the doctor give you a dignosis of celiac? If you got positive bloodwork even slightly positive, you can still have celiac disease. My grandmother had a very slight positive blood test and they went and did a biopsy and found that she had intestinal damage. She was diagnosed with celaic based on... -
ARCHIVED Gluten-free Dairy-free Vegetarian Cookbook
Carriefaith replied to Clarise49's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I am also gluten free, dairy free, and I am a guess what you'd call a partial vegetarian that eats seafood. I'll eat seafood, mostly fish and lobster (when in season) and I'll only have beef/chicken/or turkey a few times a month. No pork or ham though. To make things easier I just modify the recipes in the gluten free books, I subsitute soy milk (So Good... -
ARCHIVED Mislabeled Chicken
Carriefaith replied to sdragoo's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Thanks, That is a good idea. I take it you or someone you know has had a nasty reaction? -
That's weird that the doctors say that... There is no reason why they couldn't get it if they are on the north american diet. There are probably less cases of celiac amoung Asians than Europeans because in Asia the staple food is rice, thus many people in Asia would be on a gluten-free diet or close to one anyway.

ARCHIVED Creams, Makeup Etc.
Carriefaith replied to chana's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
Yes, those products can be a problem and I have personally reacted to non gluten-free suncreen. I am not sure about the products that you mentioned but I will give you info on some gluten free equivalents: Suncreen - Banana Boat (I also think that Coppertone is gluten-free, anyone have a conformation on that?) Toothpaste - Colgate or Crest Lipstick ... -

ARCHIVED Diagnostic Methods And Second Opinions
Carriefaith replied to GFG's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I personally have not had tests done with enterolab since I was diagnosed through positive bloodwork and biopsy. I think that enterlab is reliable. If you have the gene for celiac and positive gluten sensitivity result from enterolab than you should definiately be on the gluten-free diet; however, you could also get the celiac blood panel and see if these... -
ARCHIVED Advice...new To This Topic.
Carriefaith replied to Momma Bird's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I agree with Tasha2004, I think you should definately be tested for celiac, but also other auto-immune diseases, and other things like thyroid, lactose intolerance, ect. And Jnkmnky also made a good point, if you are from the states you pay the doctor to go to the appointment so your doctor should want your business and thus be willing to listen and help... -
Same here. I used to eat baked potatoes there last year, but I don't trust them anymore and haven't eaten there in months.

ARCHIVED Aunt Jemima And Tositos
Carriefaith replied to Hearts's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
There is a very slight risk of cross contamination with gluten-free Frito-Lay (Tostitos) products that are produced on the same lines as gluten products. The company says that they wash the lines between batches; however, there may be a gluten residue left on the lines. I think most people are fine with them, but it really comes down to personal choice. -
ARCHIVED Good Frozen Foods
Carriefaith replied to jknnej's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I eat a lot of plain frozen veggy mixes heated up in the microwave and then I put gluten-free soy sauce or margerine on them. I also eat Cavendish straight cut, shoestring, and country cut french fries baked in the oven. -
