  1. After you are done with all testing do give the diet a try as false negatives are not uncommon.
  2. Okay this is really annoying. I had an avatar but thought I would change it to another picture. When I went to add another it said the file was too big. So I figured I would just put the old one back and I am getting the same message. If the other one fit before why won't it now!!!!!!
  3. I just thought this might bring a smile to you other cat lovers. The new addition to the family is doing quite well. She has blended in quite well with the family. She does however have a really odd habit. For the 4th morning in a row I have gotten up to find something in the water bowl. The first morning I was really grossed out as she was sitting there...
  4. Yea it is surprising what they will eat. At one time I had a kitty that went nuts for brussel sprouts and broccoli, you couldn't leave a bowl unattended and expect it to be there when you got back, another loved pb and jelly or anything sweet and another that wouldn't eat any people food other than meat. Never had to worry about leftovers back then. Oddly...
  5. In the case of orange juice I do think it would have to say derived from wheat. In vitamins and supplements however the labeling laws are different. In the case of supplements it is best to call the maker and ask.
  6. If your going to get tested for celiac you need to keep eating gluten until your tests are finished. Did the doctor who did the colonoscopy mention internal hemmies? They can cause bleeding. Do mention the bleeding to the doctor. In my case I bleed when I get glutened but it is good to rule out anything else. That may mean another scope if it has been awhile...
  7. Some of the breads are better than others. Most are best toasted or microwaved first. Udi's and Grainless Baker are a couple of my favs. Both make a multi-gluten-free-grain varitey. I'm a 'pasty white bread girl' myself though. For fiber I usually go with fruits and veggies. Sweet potatos have a lot of both soluable and insoluable fiber if you like them...
  8. If it itches and the lesions leave purplish scars than it very well may be DH. Do ask a derm to biopsy next to a lesion and to look specifically for DH. Have you had a celiac panel done? Are you having any other symptoms of celiac like stomach or intestinal issues (even if sporatic), migraines, difficulty with thought or memory, balance issues, joint and...
  9. Did your doctor run the antigliadin tests also or just the TTG?
  10. You say she has been doing better on the diet since November, when did you have the tests run? If she was gluten free or gluten light that would cause a false negative with testing. One slice of bread a day is gluten light. False negatives are not uncommon even on a full gluten diet. If you want to have the celiac panel rerun put her back on gluten with...
  11. A positive blood test trumps the negative biopsy. Some doctors diagnose without biopsy if the blood tests are positive as the rate of false negatives is pretty high. The damage your doctor did find could very well be due to celiac. I would stay on the diet strictly and give yourself time to heal. The choice to take the meds now or wait a bit and see if you...
  12. Have you tried Grainless Baker or Udi's? Also keep in mind that almost all our breads and buns etc need to be toasted or microwaved for the best taste and texture.
  13. Some of us react to nightshades and tomatoes are part of that family. Do you notice the same reaction to potatoes? Don't lose heart if it seems you react to more and more things. Some of us are reactive to a lot of stuff until we heal. At diagnosis I tested positive to allergies to 98 of 99 things tested for. By six months into the diet I only had 3 allergies...
  14. Yea I so wished I could have been diagnosed when my kids were little it would have made such a difference in their lives. All the picnics moving closer and closer to the bathroom at the park until we had to stop having them at all. Having to stop taking my daughter to her horseback riding lessons and the missed plays and school activities. I even missed my...
  15. I agree with the other posters that you need to get back on gluten for a good 2 to 3 months and you may still have a false negative. Also keep in mind that there are some diagnosed celiacs that don't have the 2 genes that are most commonly the only ones tested for. You could go through expense of the gene testing and still be told that there is no way your...
  16. If your taking whole food supplements make sure the don't have wheat or barley grass. Those would not be safe but can still be labeled gluten free so read all ingredients.
  17. I personally don't think this is good advice as it can give people the idea that it is okay to cheat on the diet. For one thing endoscopies can miss the damage if damage is patchy or in an area the scope cannot reach. Some doctors also do not recognise the changes that occur before full villi destruction or do but will tell us to keep eating gluten and come...
  18. I hope the time goes by quickly for you. Whether the tests show anything or not your body really has already give you the 'diagnosis'.
  19. Kareng gave the same advice I would. I hope everything goes well.
  20. It might be a good idea to add in a sublingual B12 as you may not be able to absorb the B12 from a swallowed pill.
  21. First off I am going to address the tax issue. You can only deduct the difference between gluten free and regular foods not the full cost of the gluten free foods. This requires not only keeping all reciepts but also noteing the price of the wheat versions for each purchase. That is a lot of record keeping. Also the amount that can be deducted for medical...
  22. I would have them all get celiac panels done if you have insurance. It is advised that when one family member gets diagnosed all should be tested. As far as the gene testing goes that does not tell you if someone has the disease or even if they are at risk for developing it as most places only test for 2 of the associated genes. Some places will also test...
  23. I think they should be lower but it can take time to get into the 'normal' range. So don't be disappointed in the tests are not completely negative.
  24. For what it is worth I think your doing the right thing. I can especially identify with the D with no sense of when it would happen. That was me for years and I often didn't even have pain with it. It got to the point where I didn't even want to eat if I had to go anywhere for the next couple hours. Eventually I did get to the point where the D was very...
