  1. Hi, I have a symptoms question - has anyone had a red nose as a celiac symptom. Not crayola red, just a fair-skinned, got-some-sun red that doesn't match the rest of your complexion? I had sort of noticed, because I would even out my complexion with makeup, but I never thought about it as a symptom. But today - my nose is the same colour as the rest...
  2. Sorry, I thought you were also asking if anyone thought folate could be related to celiac. I'm sorry I misinterpreted your question. I guess I was wondering if you had maybe still some damage to your gut, and for some reason, maybe you had changed something about how you were eating? I'm guessing you'd know if you were pregnant (using up more folate)....
  3. Hi Georgie, I too have long-standing B12 deficiency (may be PA), and I have a folate def. caused by Celiac Disease; I've been supplementing the B12 with self-injection weekly. I haven't been gluten-free for that long, but my doctor has said it's going to take a while for these vitamins to normalize. Part of it depends on how much damage was done before...
  4. Hi, I'm starting on week 4 too. I'm inthe hospital for celiac complications (iv vitamins, additional tests, etc), since sat and they said a few more days. The gluten-free food part isn't bad, but I also have to be DF and maybe soy free. My neuro symptoms haven't resolved; one kind of D has stopped, but I still have a lot of gas, pain, & D (they're doing...
  5. Hi, Have you been checked for vitamin/mineral definciencies? I have those symptoms and my pcp thinks probably my daily headache w/ neck pain, 'sandy' eyes (puffy too), dizzy, are vit. def. The headache is dif than migraine, yes, more dull? I have mine sometimes too if I forget to drink enogh water. I odn't know if singmifcant. I'm sorry can't remember which...
  6. Kassandra I hope it is getting better. I think you are so much braver and smarter than I am for remembering to ask the right questions and being firm. I'm in the hospital now for celiac and they're doing IV therapy of vitamns and other testing. I know those are ok and they checked; but I don't trust the food but my doctor and the staff say it's gluten-free...
  7. Thanks to everybody for your postings. I was really scared - I feel horrible and then getting back all these deficiencies ... thanks for the supportive posts and it helps so much to have perspective. My PC doctor called this afternoon and they're admitting me to the hospital tomorrow for a few days. I'm scared, but also relieved. I'm so tired and I...
  8. Wow, sorry to hear that you got glutened! If you'd told me, I wouldn't have been surprised to hear that there was a Vann's that was gluten-free. I guess that's why we're supposed to read everything... (you'd think that we could just get one of those buzzers on the wrist or something instead though to train us). I bought this thing at Target (or Menard's?...
  9. Hi, I'm on week 3 of a gluten-free diet, DF for one week. I actually feel worse this week; D and vomiting, major fatigue, bruising, and day 3 of migraine. I just got back some new numbers about deficiencies, and hoped some of the experienced might help me figure out what to do. Ferritin 6.8 (11-306) as of 5/8 Iron 62 as of 5/8 D, 25-OH, D2 <4 ng...
  10. They dx'd my B12 deficiency first, which is how my PCP got to the Celiac. So I have B12 self-injections. It's supposed to be every 3 weeks, but I'm at every 6 days and still showing a deficiency (along with ferritin, folate, and iron - they won't test for anything else - it's all going to normalize so why bother? according to the doctors). Normal the B12...
  11. Let's see, um, not very coordinated, neurotic, anxious, easily distracted, yet focuses too hard, funky reflexes, 'mysterious fainting spells' ... first they got so worried that it was thousands of dollars of medical tests - you name it, I've had it (MRIs, halter monitor, etc etc) - because one week it's MS! and then it's hypochondria, depression or stress...
  12. Thank you ravenwoodglass for such a clear explanation. I definately see your points, especially regarding 'processed' to be gluten-free. Maybe once healed ... I know I'm pretty sensitive - I've always had certain foods and additives (MSG, aspartame, for ex.) that were triggers for migraines in the smallest amounts so it makes sense that I would have sensitivity...
  13. I've had great luck with the Whole Foods Praire Bread - I think it tastes great, and I just went gluten-free. When I first bought it, I ate it with cheese without toasting it. At the end of the loaf it needed toasting. Aside from a tiny tiny tiny bit of texture, I don't think I really would notice it was even gluten-free and not another artisnal bread when...
  14. I wear MAC (or did until my dx and subsequent fear of cosmetics!)I stopped by their counter and they have a book that lists all of the ingredients at all the counters. It doesn't do all the translations, but if you were interested in specific products (I was) and knew how to translate it was helpful. I was impressed my the level of detail and the helpfulness...
  15. How did you figure out you were intolerant to Buckwheat? (or the other things you mention in your post?) thanks, grey
  16. Oh no - I hope it's not a food allergy! That's all I need. I do have a ragweed allergies, as well as a whole host of other weed, tree, grass, and mold allergies, but I didn't think I had food allergies. I wonder if the gluten-free diet is making me more sensitive? I wonder if I should get tested for food allergies. Is this possible? thanks -
  17. I'm new at gluten-free (just over 2 weeks), and trying to figure out what in my diet is still setting me off. I mostly don't eat prepared foods, breads (Whole Foods), crackers, Lara bars, organic PB, and organic fruit spread are about it, I thought. Then I remembered Lifestream Buckwheat gluten-free wildberry waffles. I've been eating them when running out...
  18. Donna, It's funny, most people (especially my evil gastroent.) don't think I'm sick at all. I think that my system is just really wound up right now because of stress and the change to gluten-free. I was glad I had the biopsy or I'd be doubting it too becuase of the way symptoms flare with the intolerances. It's so confusing. It's hard to remember it's not...
  19. I thought the Ener-g crackers had too much of a consistency, they came in a package of gluten-free food so I didn't read their label as closely (bad me). I'll drop those for a while (can't hurt). I thought I was being so good! I'm in WI so Kinnikinick I think is pretty easy to get. Is it brown rice bread then? Why is it good to remove corn and other grains...
  20. I have enormous problems w/ vitamins. My doctor tried me on kids vitamins, which were a little better - I lasted 4 or 5 days before they made me really sick. I thought, after the dx, that it was because of the GI damage. I'm a little over 2 weeks gluten-free. Maybe at 2 months, you're not ready for the intensity of the vitamins and you still need to...
  21. I'm in WI and I'm trying to get into the Celiac Center at the Univ of Chicago (about 1.5 h away); 1st appt is the one in Sept. They said they didn't know any doctors in Wisconsin ... I went to a WI support group meeting, and the general consensus seemed to be that going to Chicago was my best bet. I haven't been eating much processed food, and no restaurants...
  22. Hi Erin, Thanks for the UW ref. I don't think my doctor looked for crohn's or anything else. Did you see a dietician in Madison too? If so, were they very good with celiac? thanks, grey

    ARCHIVED Dating?

I don't think that any worries about dating have to do necessarily with shame. I'm not embarrassed about the diagnosis - I have no problem talking to most people about it. But in dating, there are other issues, I think. One is that a lot of dating does take place over meals or drinks. The suggestions here about having places in mind beforehand that are...
  24. Thanks- I got rid of milk, but I haven't been searching it out of product/recipes like I have gluten. I'll have to try that; sadly I think it means the breads I have will have to go, and cheese was a major protein source. Im not trying to lose weight like this; it's just been happening. (Certainly not the way my weight normally used to work!!) It seems...
  25. I was diagnosed with Celiac by tTG and biopsy on 5/23 and I've been gluten-free since. My gastro. was terrible (see my vent in the doctor thread); and I'm trying to find a new one. The UChicago md I made an appt w/ had 1st appt in late Sept. (I am having vit. D, folate, and b6 tested now) I find myself really anxious about the fact that I don't have...
