  2. I'm a pretty tough critic when it comes to eating gluten-free food because I am a part-time gluten eater. My daughter has Celiac, so we keep our house gluten-free. We've adjusted quite well the last year, mostly focusing on natural foods and mainstream gluten-free foods and a few can't-live-without substitute foods. We've been regular buyers of Glutino...
  3. We buy Michael Seasons products often. We usually get the ripple potato chips and love them. We've liked everything by Michael Seasons. At a local natural food store near us (Vitamin Cottage), we can buy snack-size bags that are really great for field trips, travelling, and sharing with groups of kids (my daughter is gluten-free). We can find some varieties...
  4. My daughter is seriously jonesing for gluten-free chicken noodle soup. I'm going to try it in the crock pot--let all teh broth and veggies cook during the day, then add the noodles when we get home from work so we can avoid the mush. Keep an eye on them and check them every 10 mins or so maybe. We always use Tinkyada noodles. I was going to just use the...
  5. Never thought I'd try fish tacos, but this actually sounds really good, and gluten-free, too! An acquaintance on another message board posted this in the food section of that site... FISH TACOS: 4 Tilapia filets 8 corn tortillas 1/2 cup cabbage mango salsa (see recipe) white sauce (see recipe) 1 avocado lemon lime grapeseed oil ...
  6. Milk Duds are fine. My daughter eats them all the time. No malt or other gluten ingredients. She is sensitive to egg yolks, though. Gets a weird bloaty, crampy feeling. Sticks with egg whites and no problem.
  7. We've had consistenly good experiences w/ eating gluten-free at Chili's. My daughter orders ribs and mashed potatoes (no gravy) and we tell the server explicitly about the food probs. We've not had a Chili's glutening experience.
  8. Here is a good link for Pagosa Springs: Open Original Shared Link It is a small place, so you might try calling some places directly about accomodating you.
  9. There are also Chili's locations in Colorado Springs. My daughter gets the baby back ribs w/ original sauce and mashed potatoes often and we've never had a problem.
  10. One of our favorite and fast gluten-free places is Noodles (Open Original Shared Link). We have never had a problem there at all. There are 3 Noodles locations in Colorado Springs. If so, you can ordered the buttered noodles made w/ rice noodles and ask for an "allergen alert" when ordering. You can add braised beef and veggies and those are also...
  11. the folks at Open Original Shared Link are some of the nicest people I know. Maybe a "going green with Celiac" booth with some lunchboxes available for purchase?
  12. I just wanted to let you know that we've all been there and sobbing in the grocery store. I remember after my first trip leaving the store after three hours feeling like this: It does get easier, and if gluten is indeed your problem, you will feel better with your dedication to remove it from your diet. I hope you feel well soon.
  13. Both of my children have silent auctions this year and I had the idea to put together a gluten-free goodies gift basket with some tried-and-true gluten free (both mainstream and speciality) products and recipes. I'm thinking pretty much gluten free meals for a whole day (breakfast/lunch/dinner/dessert). Is this something any of you would have interest...
  14. I live in Arvada and the store at 80th and Wads is pretty bad about gluten-free products, but the store at 80th and Sheridan kicks butt and has TONS of Kinnickinnick items!!! I was able to do all my shopping there rather than stopping at Vitamin Cottage. I do like to pop into VC every now and then because they have the new gluten-free cereal by Envirokidz...
  15. WOOOHOO!! I'll have to watch for the commercial. We always have those stocked in our Kenmore freezer.
  16. As far as I know, yes it is. If it is the same stuff I'm thinking of, my daughter got some as a gift and I don't recall the ingredients having anything suspect. There are also some gluten-free play doh recipes around here somewhere.
  17. Nothing bad happens by touching it, but if they play with it and then put their hands in their mouths, then they've just glutened themselves. For little ones who don't know any better it is quite a risk.
  18. The one thing that drives me crazy at my son's preschool is the use of food items in arts and crafts. If it were up to me, it just wouldn't happen. You might want to address this as a possibility as well. He's come home with animal cracker, Cheerios, etc. on projects a LOT. It just might not be something that occurs to a teacher as a danger if it isn't...
  19. My daughter is 11. She was diagnosed a year ago. I let her play with play-doh with her little brother. If she was younger and more prone to putting her hands in her mouth, I wouldn't let her play with it. If it was a school thing, I would politely request (which is nice words for demand) that an alternative be made available to the class. Too much...
  20. I wouldn't have the cafeteria produce my child's meal, even if I could make them (she's just now starting public school and has gone to private school for the last 6 years). Now, I would take steps to see if she could get use of the microwave, but she's decided she doesn't want to do that. She's become accustomed to gluten-free foods cold (like sammiches...
  21. We do cheese sticks or cheese pizza on Kinnickinnick pizza crusts quite often. Glutino crackers with cheese is pretty common, too. My daughter isn't a vegetarian, but there's not always a meat product in her lunch. She's 11 so she's exploring salad right now, and that has been fun.
  22. I was in your shoes about a year ago, too, when my daughter was diagnosed. It seemed impossible that something could be wrong with her, just because of some silly tummy aches, and that all of the sudden we had a life-long, life-altering illness to deal with. (And the pathologist was correct---Celiac is not something you outgrow). But, we did it. A year...
  23. My daughter gets puffy face and dark circles when she is glutened.
  24. There is an organization called Open Original Shared Link I am thinking about joining once I have a little more distance to my runs. I'd love to help organize a specific 5k for Celiac in the Denver area. Maybe May or October would be good months to have it because those are the two known Celiac awareness months I know of. Any other thoughts/suggestions...
  25. Me too. I just started the Couch 2 5k program.
