ARCHIVED Celiac Horseback Riding?
NewGFMom replied to NewGFMom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Thanks everybody. I'm pretty sure we can work around it. But I just wanted some affirmation that it's not that big of a deal. -Margaret -
ARCHIVED Celiac Horseback Riding?
NewGFMom replied to NewGFMom's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
There's wheat in most horse feed. Barley too. It's kind of a given... What do you do?? -
Hi Everybody, Haven't posted in a while. Looks like child #2 may be celiac as well and I'm really sad. She loves food and it was fun while it lasted... She's been interested in horses lately and I want to take her for riding lessons this summer. Just a little worried about the enviornment in a barn if the horses are eating wheat based products and slobbering...

Hi all, Just got a new Cuisinart bread machine. I mad the Gluten Free Pantry White bread and it came out GREAT. The loaf was yummy and did NOT collapse when I remove it from the pan. (A problem we struggled with in the past). Looking for some more recipes. Do you have a bread machine? What's your favorite recipe? I'd love to find an Oatmeal bread...

That looks REALLY good. Thanks! Have you made it without the cheese?

Normally my house is just gluten free. We eat everything else. My vegan friends are coming over next week. We're gluten free I'm soy intolerant, so no tofu or tempeh DH will not eat beans unless they are re-fried What can I do besides gluten-free pasta with red sauce? I could do something Mexican with beans and rice and my friends could just skip...

ARCHIVED Pizza Parties At School
NewGFMom replied to NewGFMom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I meant making pizza for the class... I'm just not sure what to ask them for. It would probably be OK if all the kids remain seated like they do for lunch. But I don't want them to cotton on to the fact that he's the reason that they can't have a "normal" party. -
ARCHIVED Pizza Parties At School
NewGFMom replied to NewGFMom's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I can make him a pizza, that's not the problem. I make great pizza that he likes. It's the fact that the classroom will be slimey with gluten and crumbs for the duration with the day. He's always wiggling his loose teeth and I just don't see how he won't get sick. -
ARCHIVED Pizza Parties At School
NewGFMom posted a topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Hi there, My son's school is really big on pizza parties. The principal is retiring and plans on having a pizza party for each classroom. They have evening events that center around pizza parties which I am dreading. My son is in kindergarten and has loose teeth that he loves to wiggle. 'Nuff said? I don't want to leave him out of things, but he... -
ARCHIVED Christmas Baking Questions

Try this for the shortbread: Open Original Shared Link This is a lemon square recipe that my whole family loves. I think you could use the bottom part for what you're describing. The flour is 3 parts Authentic Foods Brown Rice Flour, 1 part potato starch and 1/2 part tapioca starch. It's very, very good. -Margaret -
ARCHIVED Daughter With Possible Celiac Disease
NewGFMom replied to Orinda's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
We didn't biopsy, we were already gluten free by the time we got into see the GI and I flat out refused to start feeding my son gluten when he was already getting better. But I don't know of anybody who has regretted the decision to biopsy. It's a very quick and safe procedure and it might be good to know the extent of the damage. If my son had been older... -
What is it in BBQ Beef that you can't have? Most BBQ sauce is gluten free. Can't you just request a specific brand of whomever is making it, or you can make your own. Here's my recipe: 1 (28-ounce) can tomato sauce 1/3 cup brown sugar 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (The bottle of Lea and Perrins I have is gluten...

ARCHIVED Finally Found Part Of The Problem
NewGFMom replied to Lexi's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
Try lite coconut milk. WAY less calories and I can't taste the difference. You can get it at Trader Joes. I also saw some coconut milk in the organic section at Stop & Shop in a big container. It's made by the same company that makes the coconut milk ice cream. -
ARCHIVED Mmr Vaccine/celiac Disease/autism
NewGFMom replied to EmilyR83's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I'm about as pro vaccine as they come. BUT, I did wait until both my kids were three months old and a little sturdier before I allowed them to get the Hep B or any other vaccine. It just felt right to me. I knew I didn't have Hep B, so that wasn't an issue. I'm leery of the newer vaccines, but we did all the standard ones with no issues other than a few... -
ARCHIVED Playgroups And Toddlers
NewGFMom replied to RobynJ's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
You could host the next one. We have a blanket policy at our house that it is gluten free, and all our friends know that. For us, we've made a big deal that our house is the "safe place" for my son, so he doesn't have to think about it there. Everywhere else, he has to be careful, but the house is gluten-free, no exceptions. If we have a party, and people... -
ARCHIVED New Member, New Diagnosis, Upset And Confused!
NewGFMom replied to thecatlady's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
My son and his cousin are both pretty sensitive celiacs and we have had no problems with the Trader Joe's stuff that has no gluten ingredients made in shared manufacturing facilities. As long as they use good manufacturing practices, you shouldn't have an issue. It may work for you, or it may not. TJ's also has very good gluten free pasta. Nobody in... -
ARCHIVED Against The Grain Type Rolls
NewGFMom replied to NewGFMom's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Did you use Rumsford Baking powder? I find it doesn't work as well as Calumet, or even the generic brand. -
ARCHIVED Celiac And Taking Prevacid
NewGFMom replied to tfrankenberger's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son has been taking it going on six months now to resolve some unexplained belly pain. It's helping quite a bit. -
ARCHIVED Craving Cinn. Rolls
NewGFMom replied to Chrissyb's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Try this one: Open Original Shared Link You don't have to roll it out, you just press it with your hands. It's from Annalise Roberts who I think has just about the greatest gluten free cookbook around. -Margaret -
ARCHIVED What Are The Best Prepared Foods And Where Can You Get Them
NewGFMom replied to KathyBHI's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I find most gluten-free frozen bread to be revolting, crumbly and pretty unappealing. I buy the gluten-free Pantry sandwich bread mix in bulk and make that once or twice a week. It keeps for three or four days and it's really good. I use very hot water when I make it and rise it it in a warm oven for 45 minutes. Then I remove it to preheat the oven for... -
ARCHIVED Can Someone Please Help Me
NewGFMom replied to runningcrazy's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
some people react to food dyes. But I really don't think you would get gluten in a popsicle. -
ARCHIVED How Bad Really Is Play-doh If They Dont' Eat It?
NewGFMom replied to 3groovygirls's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
We thought it would be OK when my son was 3, we just figured we'd wash his hands, right? What we didn't count on was him playing at the playdough station, then going to a different station and back to playdough. Even with my husband chasing after him (he was parent help the one and only time we tried this) it was very hard to enforce the hand washing... -
ARCHIVED Help-gluten-free Pasta For School Craft Project
NewGFMom replied to elle's mom's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
We have a 504 plan that states that wheat based products must stay out of the classroom, except for at snack time under controlled circumstances. (the kids bring their own snacks) Even the art teacher must keep all supplies gluten free. The risk for cross contamination to your daughter would be huge! All she has to do is wipe her mouth with the back of... -
ARCHIVED Getting Girl Scouts To Sell Gluten Free Cookies`
NewGFMom replied to suztodd's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
The trick is not to market like a gluten free cookie. They could have girscout meringues or chocolate covered macaroons, both of which are popular cookies and inherently gluten free. They'd just need somebody to manufacture it that used good practices, or did it in a gluten free facility. We've never had trouble with Trader Joe's Meringues that aren't produced...
