  1. Thanks guys! I hadn't thought of getting him a chew-able probiotic. I can't get yogurt into him since I pulled the Danimals thanks to their flaky, "maybe there's gluten and maybe there isn't!" statement on their website. He does eat a little cottage cheese with probiotics but not consistently. I agree that pulling the dairy is a good idea in theory...
  2. So, my son (4) tested positive on his celiac panel last June. We pulled the gluten and found a GI who was willing to work with us w/o biopsy. We saw changes in him fairly quickly, but his healing was slow and it was September/October before his belly pain was gone. His appetite tripled and he was starting to introduce foods back into his diet that he had...
  3. I bought a copy of the latest gluten free cookbook by Rebecca Reilly. She makes frequent use of almond flour, which adds a lot of taste and texture. But in brownies, it was a big gritty. She is a Cordon Bleu trained chef and it really shows in the recipes. They are FULL of cream and butter. She does have some dairy-free stuff in there as well. A lot of...
  4. If you make your own, put the food coloring in before you cook it. We usually do one batch after another. And, we had them take the playdough out of his classroom entirely because we realized quickly it covered all the other toys that were out when there was a playdough table. They were supposed to buy the gluten free stuff, but it didn't end up happening...
  5. This sounds pretty cool. I've seen my son get sick, just about every time he eats anywhere but our house, no matter how careful we are. He's 4 and puts his hands in his mouth more than he should. It would be really nice to know that if we had some accidental gluten that there was some recourse. It'll probably take years before it's approved for children...
  6. As long as you do it politely and constructively, I think it's a really good idea. Here's a story to encourage you. My husband's cousin has a son who is autistic. His mom couldn't potty train him when he was 4 or 5. She kept telling the docs there was something wrong with him. Apparently his poop was REALLY strange. So, she did a bunch of research and...
  7. Thanks guys! We are still waiting on an appointment. We're actually going to Cambridge Hospital because that's where my husband's doctor sends his (the doctor's) mom to the gastrointerologist. He said, I can't refer you to anybody better than who I send my mom to! The doc is a GI, and not a celiac specialist per se, but we'll give it a shot. If...
  8. We kept the dairy in, and it took about 4 months for my son (3 now 4) stomach to stop hurting and for his poop to look more normal. It takes a long time for a lot of kids. Be patient. It also takes a while to get a grip on the diet, and to get used to all the stuff you have to do to make sure they're not getting any cross contamination. Best of luck...
  9. just one more thought from a non-celiac in a gluten-free house. I think gluten is like meat. Ex-vegetarians tend to go through an adjustment period when they put meat back into their diets where they don't feel so good. I've found I react to gluten if I have some after not having it for a week. But if I eat a cracker or a sandwich every couple of days, I...
  10. Argo Corn Starch says "gluten free" right on the box. But I don't know if it's available up in Canada...
  11. You don't have to wait for your referral to get tested for celiac! I'd take him back to your pediatrician and ask for the ELISA panel of bloodwork. This doesn't preclude going to the gastro, but you can get some answers more quickly. Our normal doctor did my son's original bloodwork and we went to the gastro after that. My son also had no problems with...
  12. Annalise Roberts has 2 AWESOME and easy pie crust recipes in her book. Unfortunately, I think it would violate copyright to list it here. They do use butter though. If you're looking for a non-dairy custard, you can do an egg custard and use coconut milk. It comes out GREAT.
  13. We had the same thing. Green Poop! It took months for my son to feel better. A lot of folks here suggested pulling dairy. But the nutritionist said that unless there was blood in his stool (and there was not) that it was likely a lactose problem. It took MONTHS for the stomach ache to go away. I was terrified we'd have to pull dairy because he refuses...
  14. My neighbor's uncle was one of the original "banana babies" in the 1930's. He was one of the first diagnosed celiacs in the country. He was only allowed to eat bananas and arrowroot when he was a child. They told him that he outgrew it and he has been eating gluten ever since. He's now in his late 80's an it's JUST starting to cause problems. This tells...
  15. I have a 325 Watt one, and I can do a double batch of gluten-free bread or piecrust or whatever. I LOVE it. I think it's totally fine for any gluten-free stuff you want to make. I definitely would NOT get the low end one. It's not sufficient for the serious baker. The professional one takes up a bit more space. But it might be worth the extra $$ if you...
  16. My husband just tested positive for Celiac, and he's a Big Guy. He weighs over 250 lbs. We're confirming via biopsy in February (hopefully). But it's common, but doctors NEVER think to test for it in overweight people. We only got tested because our son has it. It's a weird disease. It can cause lots of symptoms or almost none. My son was starting to get...
  17. I'd visit the nutritionist and the doctor as a family and get the doctors to explain it all. If it's coming from somebody objective and authoritative like a medical professional, he's more likely to get it. What a difficult situation. I'm so sorry this is happening.
  18. Also a lot of name brand turkeys (butterball for one) have gluten in them to begin with. Any "self basting" turkey will likely contain gluten before it's even stuffed. I suggest getting an all natural turkey breast, filling it with gluten-free stuffing and having a separate main course for you if they don't get it.
  19. I'd like to second the motion... If you don't tell them, you they wont' know. Cornbread stuffing is amazing. Annalise Roberts has the best pie crust recipes I've ever made. I'm not celiac (my dh and ds are)and I prefer the gluten-free crusts. If you have flour in your kitchen, you risk contaminating everything you make that is supposed to be safe. It...
  20. I got some trader joes brand instant Miso soup and it definitely did not list barley on the ingredients, and theoretically TJ's will not hide barley. Weird.
  21. It took over 4 month for my 3 (now 4) year old to tell me his tummy stopped hurting. It also took that long for the poops to look more (but not completely) normal. some things that helped us get over the final healing hump were: Handwashing. Assume everything in the outside world is contaminated with gluten, and do not let your kid eat so much as a...
  22. Try adding a few minutes to the baking time. You should be able to press your finger into the cupcake and have it spring back in place. I found that the straw test does not work with gluten-free baking.
  23. Here's my 2 favorite slow cooker chicken recipes: 1 Salsa chicken Take 2 cans each black beans and corn. Drain them. Mix them together at the bottom of the slow cooker. Put 6-8 boneless skinless chicken thighs on top of that Layer 1-2 jars of your favorite salsa (I use Trader Joe's peach, but Paul Newman's peach or mango might be good too) Turn...
  24. So... Anybody like their doctor in Massachusetts? Anyone, Anyone?
  25. I basically refused to do the biopsy because he was doing so good on the diet. I said, if he wants to to a gluten challenge when he's older that's my son's choice. At the point we'd 'put him back on gluten' he'd probably be a teenager and be making the choice for himself. The doctor said based on his weight gain over the summer, the reduction of his tummy...
