  1. Poor little guy! Just remember 2 minutes of pain and discomfort can bring you a lot of answers in the long run. Hopefully they'll test for the gene and you'll have a pretty definitive 'no' if he doesn't have the gene. Good luck!
  2. Hey there, Try getting a thermos and making the gluten free pasta with butter and Parmesan for him to take to school. It will stay warm, and it's cheap too! I do this every day for my son, also an insanely picky eater who does not care about food. (You can tell from my photo here, that *I* am a good eater, so I'm not sure where this came from). We mostly...
  3. If it were my kid... I'd get the blood tests. It's about 90 seconds of discomfort and you can find out if his blood sugar and iron levels are OK, etc. There can be stuff going on inside that he doesn't have symptoms of (like anemia) that you can solve painlessly now. Just give him a tootsie pop or something you feel is an appropriate reward afterwards...
  4. Here's the list if anybody needs it. Open Original Shared Link LOVE TJ's.
  5. Chicken stock can be made of pretty much anything. Just take some leftover chicken or turkey (raw or cooked), put it in a pot of water with every veggie and fresh herb that is about to go bad and boil it for an hour or so. (cellery leaves and dill stems are particular favorites) Skim the fat off the top with a big spoon. The best way to freeze it is in...
  6. Looks like we're making some progress. Suddenly, my son is consuming large amounts of food, which he almost never did. I'm used to him eating about half of his dinner and being done eating for the night. Suddenly he just keeps eating! It's all good stuff, rice pasta, applesauce, fruit, cheese and yogurt. So, I'm quite pleased with that. And his BM's are...
  7. Just another "unofficial" poll. When you took your child off of gluten cold turkey, how long until they felt better? It's only been a week, and my son still says his stomach hurts all the time. I am truly dreading cutting out dairy because that is the only protein he eats. But I'm worried it may come to that. He had no behavioral or growth issues,...
  8. I think a quality margarine or shortening might work. Although, I don't know of any margarines out there that don't contain soy. The thing that works in this recipe is the all brown sugar (instead of brown and white) and the extra vanilla, and this particular combination of flours. I think the Ghiradelli chips are dairy free though. I know they make some...
  9. If you can have oats, I have a great recipe for you. I think you'd have to use the schmancy organic non-contaminated oats, but you don't need a lot of them. Put in the blender: 1 rough chopped onion 2 cloves of garlic herbs and spices of your choices (I usually use herbs de provence, but basil and oregano work fine) Salt and pepper 1 egg. Give...
  10. If you're willing to risk the raw egg, and are a cookie dough fan, these are for you. The dough just tastes like normal cookie dough. Not that I'm in to that or anything... I use the Ghiradelli large dark chocolate baking chips.
  11. After three attempts, I think I've hit on something really good. The first, I threw out. The second I ate and marveled at their addictive nature in spite of the gritty undertones. But this one, I think is the keeper. It's kind of an adapted version of the Bette Hagman, but I didn't want to use margarine or crisco. The brown sugar really covers the textures...
  12. There's a list of their gluten-free ingredients here: Open Original Shared Link Their labeling policy is very comprehensive. I love their peach salsa.
  13. So, I got the Bette Haggman cookbook. A lot of her recipes specifically call for margarine or crisco. I have not tried any of the recipes that call for that stuff, but I'm hesitant to make them. I am probably a total hypocrite that I have no problem eating & serving my family butter and sugar. (in moderate amounts) But I've always tried to draw the...
  14. The nice thing about this sauce is that it's quite mild. You can go light on the cayenne or skip it entirely, and dump some on after you serve it to your family, if you like spicy food!
  15. What kind of BBQ sauce do you like? It's mostly tomato sauce with brown sugar and spices. You can make a great bbq sauce with 1 (28-ounce) can tomato sauce 1/3 cup brown sugar 2 tablespoons red wine vinegar 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (The bottle of Lea and Perrins I have is gluten-free, but check the label, they change the formula from time...
  16. Hah! That's true about the soy flour. I just made the chocolate chip cookie recipe from the Bette Hagman book. The dough was absolutely foul. The cookies are OK though. They are just OK because somehow I -managed to half the recipe, but my brain shut down when it was time to half the salt and baking soda. So, they're a little extra salty... And Baking soda...
  17. Thanks SO much for explaining that. I was so confused about the rice flours! That's a big help. -Margaret
  18. I've noticed a lot of these recipes call for brown rice flour. Is that because they're trying to be healthy, or is it because it tastes better in these particular recipes?
  19. This is where I'm confused. It calls for gluten free flour mix. Which is the best for this particular cake? Do you make your own? Some of them use soy flour, which I think is icky. But perhaps when used in combo with others, it might be good. Any thoughts? Thanks Thanks!!

    ARCHIVED Childrens Hospital Boston

Hi there, My son just tested positive for celiac disease, and I think we want to go to the celiac program at Children's Hospital in Boston. Does anybody have any experience with this program? Do you have any specific doctor recommendations? My son is not even 4, so I really don't want to do the biopsy. I just want to do the diet and see how it goes...
  21. Hi All, My son has just tested positive with celiac disease. I absolutely LOVE to bake, and I am a little overwhelmed with the volume of gluten-free flours and baking mixes out there. I have in my pantry, corn flour, sweet rice flour (trader Joe's), tapioca flour, potato startch and xanthan gum. But they're all really expensive, so I don't want to...
  22. That's what I suspected. I remember a year a go we were visiting my husband's cousin. I was complaining about my son's limited diet. I described it to his cousin, mother of three. She said that it sounded a lot like their middle son was eating before they stopped the gluten. I didn't think much of it because his gluten-free diet is in part, to manage his...
  23. That's exactly where I'm at. They should be scheduling the GI visit today I told them I had pulled the gluten, so they'd better make it soon. It seems like a lot of parents of preschoolers really balk at the biopsy, so I'm sure they won't be surprised by my bias walking in the door. To me, going gluten-free is much less invasive then getting general anesthesia...
  24. First of all... I'm a little warm and fuzzy from the out pouring of detailed support I've gotten from this board in the last 24 hours. Thanks SO much. I have a general question about celiac disease in general. Does anybody know why kids, and some adults, with celiac disease eat so much gluten before they're diagnosed. I know four people with celiac disease...
