Also best to be on the diet awhile before you try the gluten-free oats. My daughter's doc gave the OK at the 6 month mark. And when you try it, try just a little. Also forgot to mention . . . you should send an "emergency snack pack" to school for his teacher to have on hand. Our school doesn't allow parents to send stuff in for birthdays, but they... -

Welcome dreamindarlin!!! You have found a wonderful resource and lots of new friends to offer advice and share their experiences!! My daughter was diagnosed at 6. It was a complete shock to us also. I had heard of Celiac disease but it was not even mentioned as a possibility until I went in for her post-endoscopy appt and received the diagnosis. ... -

Just wanted to make sure that Patti didn't get Bev'd Julie's tickled by Peter's balls??!!!?? Finished me book . . . really enjoyed it . . . somewhat of a twist at the end, will now have to ponder to recall clues and look for descrepencies. Author never did include any anal gland/butt scooting references but there were a bunch... -

If memory serves me correctly . . . I do recall an incident which involved digging in the rubish bin for caramels from the 99 cent store . . . Ok . . . more from the book . . . the lead character ended up with some sort of rash on her arm from wearing some sort of patch (Bev) and also one of the characters is an avid gardener (Judy). Still looking... -

Listen to all of these coincidences within the first six pages . . . She's originally from North Shores (Bev). Her mom lives on Yellow Dog (Susie) Island. She now resides in California... -
ARCHIVED I'm New And Need Some Advice!
Darn210 replied to ECD's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
GO TO THE DOCTOR!!! Almost passing out in a restaurant is not normal. If you've been gluten free for a while then a celiac blood panel won't be valid. I believe if you are currently on benadryl (and please tell your doctor this) then they can't do the scratch testing on you, but I believe there is a blood test that is still a valid even if you are taking... -

ARCHIVED Gluten Free Oatmeal?
Darn210 replied to mardigan's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Oats are notoriously cross contaminated. If you are going to try oats, it should be certified gluten free oats. The oat ingredient in a mainstream cereal would not have come from gluten free oats. Also, be careful with something like Bob's Red Mill . . . that company makes both "oats" and "gluten-free oats" . . . make sure you're buying the right one.... -
ARCHIVED What's A Good Gluten Free Cookbook?
Darn210 replied to jjc's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
I have found that the best way to make my new goodies taste like my old goodies is to use my old recipes with a good flour substitution/added xanthan gum/extra baking soda/extra baking powder. I like Annalise Roberts' Baking Classics. I prefer her flour mix with the fine ground brown rice flour (although it is expensive). She gives some nice information... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Free Oatmeal?
Darn210 replied to mardigan's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Personal opinion, I think it's too early. Also, I hear to try a small helping your first try. We got the OK from the GI after my daughter was 6 months gluten free. Even then, she only had a small cookie (she's not much of an oatmeal fan) but she had no problems. -

ARCHIVED Van's Waffles
Darn210 replied to ohsotired's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
ohsotired . . . I see that you have been gluten free for less than a month. You are still healing. You may be having problems with sugar (maple syrup, banana bread). The villi process more than just the sugar (lactose) in milk. They process a few other sugars as well. This was part of my daughter's diagnostic process . . . a generalized disaccharidase... -
ARCHIVED Van's Waffles
Darn210 replied to ohsotired's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
We have a toaster . . . but I just thought that I would throw in that my daughter prefers hers with cream cheese spread on top. Also, we tried Trader Joes waffles and she did not care for them so I toasted them, chopped them up, tossed them with butter and some spices and they became my crispy topping (replacing stove top stuffing) on one of my casserole... -

ARCHIVED Isn't Baking Soda And Powder Gluten Free?
Darn210 replied to Bellamia's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
They may also be referring to cc'd baking soda/powder by using the same measuring spoon throughout a cooking process. I know I do that. If I have to measure out a teaspoon of salt, sugar, flour, baking powder/soda, etc . . . I will use the same spoon for all dry ingredients. So if you have a container from before going gluten free and you have a habit... -
ARCHIVED Help Me All U Detectives Out There!
Darn210 replied to runlikeagirl's topic in Food Intolerance & Leaky Gut
You said you cooked your egg in a clean skillet . . . is it a scratched non-stick skillet that could have had residue trapped in the scratches? Did you use a little butter . . . possibly from a shared (cc'd) tub of butter? Also check your egg-flippers spatulas for wear and tear (areas that may trap residue). Milk Duds are OK. -
