  1. I know that there are around 40 GI doctor at NYU- not sure how many teach and how many see patients, but I have heard of Dr. Roshini Rajapaksa, a gastroenterologist at New York University Medical Center and assistant professor of medicine, New York University School of Medicine he has been mentioned in some articles about celiac. Julie
  2. Can you see someone at the Celiac Disease center at Columbia? Maybe there is still "hidden gluten" in your diet? in medications, etc?
  3. Hi- I usualyy get moth sores when I eat gluten and they can appear anywhere from an hour or two to the next morning. They are always on my cheeks, they feel like a bad cheek bite. Before diagnosis, when I was eating a lot of gluten- they were also on the roof of the mouth- toward the back- almost felt like a burn. Sometimes I rinse with warm salt water...
  4. Hi, I'm so sorry to hear of all the problems your Mom is having. I think there are many of us here who know exactly what it feels like to be afraid to eat and it must be even worse dealing with anaphylactic allergies. Here are some listings in NC, but if your Mom is willing to travel, maybe she could get an appt. with one of the University celiac research...
  5. A very nice segment about Enjoy Life- I just wish they would've said "Celiac" at least once! Just mentioned allergies.
  6. Well- I agree with you. Here is the response from Target: "Thanks for your additional e-mail. I'll be sure to share your supplemental comments with our grocery team and our executives. Thanks for shopping with us. I hope we'll see you again soon at Target." I guess I'll be sticking with Walmart!
  7. Sorry, I just realized this is the best forum for this post Here is the info I recieved after writing to Target a couple weeks ago about their archer farms products. From the sound of it- they would like us to purchase the items, then write to them in great detail and then wait and then they will get back to us! I am writing back to them to explain how...
  8. Here is the letter I sent to Target, Hello, Thank you for the reply. However, it would be very difficult for me and the 2.2 million Americans with celiac disease to do our shopping if all stores made it so difficult to find out the gluten-free status of foods and products. It is extremely helpful to know the ingredients before we go shopping or while...
  9. Here is the info I recieved after writing to Target a couple weeks ago about their archer farms products. From the sound of it- they would like us to purchase the items, then write to them in great detail and then wait and then they will get back to us! I am writing back to them to explain how this isn't possible for people with celiac- I'm also going to...

  11. Here is one of my favorite recipes from "Bon Appetit- Without the Wheat" Soft Pretzels 3
  12. Susan, It's true, the dental comminuty is not that familiar w/ celiac. When I was sick, before diagnosis, I had very painful apthous ulcers in my mouth. As a hygienist I didn't know what they were and my boss the dentist did not know what they were. Now I know that they were another symptom of Celiac. Honestly, I was not taught about celiac disease in...

  14. Hi Nicole, I'm a dental hygienist and celiac and unfortunately many in the dental community aren't very aware of celiac. If you're referring to symptoms of celiac that relate to dental care, the the dentist should be looking for apthous ulcers and/or a loss of enamel on teeth (due to the nutritional deficiencies when these teeth were forming). I know...
  15. STRAWBERRY TORTE 1 cup gluten-free flour Bob's Red Mill All Purpose or Beth's gluten-free Pantry All-Purpose
  16. You can also clean out and save empty tuna fish cans and bake hamburger buns in them! English muffins too I guess Julie
  17. Kassandra, Subsituting the milk and butter in the "torte" part of the recipe will be fine. I'm assuming you can have eggs? I don' think a soy milk would "whip" well enough to mix with the fruit for the filling. Here are some non-dairy whipped cream substitutes... Cool Whip Non-Dairy Whipped Topping: contains casein; frozen tub Regular; Free; French...
  18. Hi everyone, Thought I'd post one of my favorite recipes to use all of those strawberries this time of year... STRAWBERRY TORTE 1 cup gluten-free flour Bob's Red Mill All Purpose or Beth's gluten-free Pantry All-Purpose
  19. Jessica- I don't know of anything to make the symptoms go away any faster, but I try to think of having the symptoms as a "positive" thing. Some celiacs don't experience any symptoms when they eat gluten bu accident. I feel like if I were one of those people, I might keep making the same mistake and end up doing damage. You can at least be greatful that...
  20. Anyone know of any restaurants in Albany NY (besides Outback)? Thanks
  21. GlaxoSmithKline"We do not provide a list of gluten free products as formula changes or manufacturing site changes may occur. We ask that consumers call us about specific products to ask this question. As far as Polident tablets are concerned, they are a gluten free product." 4/25/07 Polident tabs are pretty similar to Efferdent Tabs to clean dentures...
  22. Hi All, Just wanted to let any of you who live in central/upstate NY know if you get TV channel WCNY (PBS), I was invited to be on the show "Food for Thought" on July 12 at 12:30 to talk about Celiac Disease and cook a gluten-free meal! Should be fun to get the word out! Thanks, Julie
  23. "The Gluten Connection" has a lot of interesting info about how eliminating gluten can improve many health problems. It's not just for people w/celiac but anyone. Written by a nutritionist Sherry Leiberman. Julie
