ARCHIVED Degree Of Sensitivity To Foods QuestionWW340 replied to doodle's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications I am a sensitive celiac, and I would give you a try. I would ask a lot of questions first, and then try out your food. I would be a loyal customer as long as I didn't get sick. If I ever got sick from eating there, that would be the end of it. Good luck with your endeavor.

ARCHIVED Betty Crocker gluten-free MixesWW340 replied to purple's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications This is truly wonderful news. Now that we have a major food manufacturer in our corner, life is going to be a little better. The product reviews are up now for the cookies and the brownies. Open Original Shared Link

I am not sure what your point is here, Momma Goose. The fact still remains that these things are caused by gluten, which is the main point of the thread. Some of us do have a sensitivity to gluten that transends the gut. Those of you that don't have that manesfestion are invited to attest to the fact that you don't have it, just don't try to convince...

I absolutely have a skin reaction to gluten that is not a traditional allergy. When I had my celiac crisis that led to my diagnosis, one of my symptoms was a constant all over itch that I had 24 hours a day. It felt like hives, but there was no rash. I was tested for allergies to wheat, because I was already suspecting wheat as a culprit in my symptoms...

It is pretty obvious that it is more profitable for the big Pharma to advertise directly to the consumer, rather than to the physicians. Commercials are crowding all forms of media these days. Tarnalberry and Tim-n-VA both make good points here. How many of your friends and relatives do what the doctor advises about weight loss, exercise and quitting...

ARCHIVED Why Is Endoscopy Still "the Gold Standard"?WW340 replied to jacflash's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms It is simple really, the fact is, the biopsy is the gold standard. If you want to be diagnosed celiac with no doubt, you get the biopsy. If you don't care whether or not you have a firm diagnosis which cannot be denied, then don't get the biopsy. No ones opinion here is going to change the facts. It is the gold standard of diagnosis. If you can live...

ARCHIVED Diagnosis At 50WW340 replied to LCOBB's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs Flourgirl explained it very well. Symptoms can wax and wane over the years, or not appear at all until later. I too have had weird symptoms all my life. I was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, ulcers, and many other things through out the years, but never celiac disease. One infectious disease doctor was sure I had HIV from blood transfusions in the...

Well, there is good news on the horizon for you. Doctors are going to be quite scarce in the near future, so most all of us will be seeing nurse practitioners and PA's instead. Nurse practitioners and PA's spend way less time getting educated and will be less likely to know much about pharmacology. There will be very little new research and development...

ARCHIVED Pizza CrustWW340 replied to clinicaloutburst's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips Dave's recipe is the same one I use for Pizza. It is great. I use the Sylvan border farms general purpose flour and add the called for tapioca flour for this. And yes, a sashet of yeast is a packet like the ones that come in the bread mix. For best results, I recommend cooking it on parchment paper on a perforated pizza pan. The parchment keeps...

How were you "sort of diagnosed"? Did your doctor diagnose you as celiac and put it in your medical record?

My stomach didn't start getting flat until I gave up grains almost entirely. I am not on a particular named diet, but I mainly eat meat, veggies - cooked and raw, fruit, eggs, cheese, and nuts. I occasionally have rice or a potato. I feel much better eating this way. I never really had to eliminate dairy. It doesn't seem to bother me. I use dairy...

I have no problem with Trader Joe's labeling. I look at the manufacturing statement on the back for all gluten free products. I would have a problem if they did not disclose that it is manufactured in a plant that also processes wheat products. The best thing to do if you cannot tolerate any wheat what so ever, is to avoid all premade products. I rarely...

ARCHIVED Feeling HopelessWW340 replied to ByeByeBagles's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms My first 2 hour trip to the grocery store made me cry. It was so frustrating and depressing, and I came home with very little to eat. I was limiting myself so much in the beginning out of fear of what to eat, that it made it even harder. Not to fear, however, it gets much, much easier as you become more knowledable. After a while, you will know what...

ARCHIVED Follow Ups Needed/screening?WW340 replied to livingglutenfree's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease I follow up with my GI every 6 mos. for bloodwork. He does not repeat the celiac tests, but he checks all my vitamin levels, liver enzymes, CBC, and thyroid. I also have bone density test every 2 years.

ARCHIVED Are There Various Levels One Can Tolerate Gluten Without Symptoms?WW340 replied to rubyred's topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease I know a blood and biopsy positve celiac that does not react to eating a small amount of gluten. Unfortunately for her, she thought she could get by with eating small amounts (not watching for cc). While she was not reacting as far as she could tell, her body was suffering the consequences. She developed further problems, including a fracture due to osteoporosis...

I was constantly hungry when I first started the diet. In fact, I was beginning to think I just couldn't do the gluten free diet, because I felt like I was starving all the time. Once I increased my protein, mainly eggs, peanut butter, and chicken, the hunger went away. I eat 2 - 3 eggs almost everyday. My cholesterol is slightly elevated, but my doctor...

ARCHIVED Scared To Death Of My BiopsyWW340 replied to GFinBC's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms I totally agree with this. My GI said he could diagnose me with celiac disease just based on my sky high blood numbers, but he wanted to make sure nothing more was going on since I had had the disease for so long. He even had me start the diet immediately, as the diagnosis was already made. I had a colonoscopy as well as the endoscopy 3 weeks later. ...

I am no connoisseur of beer, but I do enjoy drinking it. My favorite is New Grist, but I find Redbridge acceptable when I just want a beer and can't find New Grist. I keep both in the frige. I tried the Bards Tale Ale, but did not care for it. It is pretty strong on flavor, others may like that. It took a little getting used to the gluten free beer...

Constant itching 24 hours a day was one of my symptoms prior to diagnosis. After I went gluten free it was much better, but did not completely resolve until I eliminated gluten containing body products and shampoos. Within a very short time after eliminating those, the itch totally resolved. I get the itch back anytime I get cc'd. I have to be careful...

These are all good ideas. I do some very similar things. I keep a list of meals I like on the fridge. If I am going to cook, I cook extra so I don't have to cook everynight. I freeze the extra in containers I can use for travel or to take to work. Learn to bake a chicken, it is very easy to do. I cook a whole chicken once a week. I put it in a baking...

ARCHIVED Major Sleep Disorders And CeliacWW340 replied to citykatmm's topic in Related Issues & Disorders I have been having terrible insomnia for a while. I just had my regular 6 month blood work done and they added a vit. D level, which came very back low. I am now on super high doses of vitamin D and have been sleeping much better. In fact, from my very first dose, sleep has improved. I get very sleepy the day I take the vit. D and am still sleepy the...

ARCHIVED Eating Gluten Before The BiopsyWW340 replied to Bell's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms I have read everywhere from the equilivent of one slice of bread, up to four slices of bread are needed daily for the gluten challenge, and that it should be for 6 weeks to ideally 3 months prior to testing. I don't know what is truly the minimum you would need to ingest, maybe somewhere inbetween. I also had the symptom of awakening at 4:30am extremely...

ARCHIVED How Would You Want To Be Cared For?WW340 replied to Country Girl's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease My gluten reactions feel like a cross between food poisoning and a bad case of the flu. I feel sick to my stomach and often have violent vomiting, diarrhea, bad stomach pains, hurt all over and total fatigue. I also get very cranky. My husband can always tell by my crankiness before I show the other symptoms. I also itch all over 24 hours a day. My symptoms...

ARCHIVED Post Egd/gluten-challenge RantWW340 replied to julirama723's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms It doesn't really matter whether you call yourself gluten intolerant or celiac, it doesn't really make people understand any better. I often call myself gluten intolerant or gluten allergic, because most people don't have a clue about celiac disease. All celiacs are gluten intolerant, so we are all in the same boat, it is just that not all gluten intolerants...
