ARCHIVED Celiacs In Families
dadoffiveboys replied to monkeypuss's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
Well in my family of five boys (one I can't tell yet).. my wife does NOT have it.. I HAVE it.. and my four older boys ALL HAVE IT. (I'm betting my fifth will have it but he's only 6 months old now). That means (if I do the math right) that 100% have it. I believe it is probably is 10% for having celiac if your family members are gluten intolerant.. but... -
ARCHIVED Substitutions For Margarine
dadoffiveboys replied to roxie's topic in Gluten-Free Recipes & Cooking Tips
Fleishmens (sp?) UNSALTED margarine. It is the only one (comes in the sticks) that is both Dairy and Soy free. The regular margarine has dairy in it but NOT the UNSALTED. Most groceries stores carry it in the sticks. It's basically vegetable oil. (don't ask me why adding 'salt' means you need to have dairy in it as well!!) -
ARCHIVED Laboratory Results Interpretation - Question For Medical Professional
dadoffiveboys replied to smd818's topic in Doctors
Your son sounds EXACTLY like my son. He was below the 1st percentile in weight and down to the 35th percentile in height. We saw and had him tested for celiac - was negative (although his TTG was 20 and >20 positive... I think that's pretty significant). They refused to test anything other than the TTG. He was 2 1/2 at the time he was tested. In... -
ARCHIVED Weight Watchers And gluten-free Diet?
dadoffiveboys replied to LIZARD's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
My wife and I use the weight watchers ONLINE. TRY IT! We LOVE it for the the recipe builder! We use it to put all the ingredients into our Gluten Free Recipes and it tells you the numbers of points / serving! Then it's easy to track what you eat. Regular WW doesn't help as much because you really need the recipe builder on a gluten-free diet. Believe... -
ARCHIVED How Easy Is It To Travel Gluten Free In The U.s?
dadoffiveboys replied to amber's topic in Traveling with Celiac Disease
I would HIGHLY RECOMMEND checking on ANY Outback before you go. My local Outback has a gluten-free menu but DOES NOT use a separate grill. Hence myself and two of my sons got sick. Make sure they have a separate grill and actually have a gluten-free menu at the one you go to. My Outback says 'get it online'. This means, they know nothing about gluten... -
People don't mean to be ignorant.. it's because most people simply don't know (hence the definition of the word). My son WAS in the public schools. The teacher was very good about asking about foods.. we gave instructions to call us about ALL foods my son was going to eat. They were having an ice cream party with toppings. I said, specifically, let...

ARCHIVED Celiac Disease Antibiotic Cure?
dadoffiveboys replied to Ali82's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I believe in this whole discussion there is a huge variety of symptoms from celiac. Some may be caused or cured by antibiotics but I would guess it masks the symptoms like every other 'medicine' cure. I am not a 'true celiac' because my blood tests were negative, biopsy negative and my TTG negative (by the Doctors standards) although my scores were 'elevated... -
ARCHIVED Adhd? Gluten Sensitivity? Any Help Would Be Great-
dadoffiveboys replied to bec's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
My son has true ADHD PLUS ADHD induced by Gluten/Casein. My son was also diagnosed with Tourette's which has concurrent ADHD plus OCD (yipee huh?). He ended up on a combination of anti-anxiety and stimulant medication (Celexa and Adderall XR). With the two medications it's like night and day. He's happier, he can organize himself, etc. All positive... -
BTW.. Myself and two of my sons have DH flare up if we eat EITHER Gluten OR Casein. Only one of my Five boys so far can tolerate Casein actually We've taken him on/off milk and he didn't have a problem or change at all. All my other boys either break out or get Chronically constipated. Funny enough my dad is very sick right now from a life in...

ARCHIVED Does Anyone Have Asthma?
dadoffiveboys replied to Mango04's topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I think you are going to see more and more people with Asthma later in life - here is why. One of the causes of Asthma is GERD. GERD is one effect of food allergies. If you go YEARS and YEARS with a food allergy you can break down the stomach valve which keeps the acid in your stomach. This allows the acid to move up your throat and down into your lungs... -
Myself and all five of my children (and my Mother and Father) all have to be gluten free. I found out I needed to be Casein free as well. I loved bread and pasta and milk and cheese. My favorite meal from before was spagetti with cheese on it. I guess I should have known it's not normal to eat 6 PLATES of it!!! First thing I found out - replace your...

ARCHIVED Is Dh Related To More Than Gluten Sensitivity?
dadoffiveboys replied to ellen123's topic in Dermatitis Herpetiformis
My DH is also triggered by Casein. Although I'm not sure if this is a 'cross-reaction' and mimicry so it's really Gluten but my body confuses it. Since I am gluten-free/CF though I am completely DH free. I did a test recently to confirm I can't have any dairy at all (NOT DOING THAT AGAIN) where I tried a 4oz yogurt. It made me sick for a week (or so)... -
ARCHIVED Eucharist And Communion Bread
dadoffiveboys replied to moldlady's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
You need to talk to your priest about this! According to Catholic tradition, a PIECE OF THE EUCHARIST MUST BE PLACED IN EACH CUP - ie lets put gluten into the cup. If you watch a Catholic service, you can watch the priest take pieces of the host and place it into each cup at the Altar. Unless you have an arrangement with your priest and he knows about... -
ARCHIVED Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis (fsgs)
dadoffiveboys posted a topic in Related Issues & Disorders
I wanted to post some interesting information about my family (and my Father that has FSGS - via Biopsy confirmed). I found myself allergic to gluten (intolerance) and went gluten-free and noticed my back pains went away completely (I have DH). My father about 9 months ago went gluten-free as well (after MUCH convincing) and the following occurred:... -
ARCHIVED Interpreting Blood Work
dadoffiveboys replied to borst's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
There are different ranges based on the lab. For my test, a TTG <=20 was normal. My TTG was 20. For IgA a score of <20 was normal, 20-50 equivocal and >50 positive. I was 46 on the IGA Anti-gliadin and went for a biopsy - actually several biopsies. They were all negative and showed only mild signs of Gastritis and GERD. I went gluten-free and... -
ARCHIVED Scared Of Eating Gluten For celiac disease Test! Not Sure What To Do.
dadoffiveboys replied to Thi8's topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
I have a now 3 1/2 yr old (2 1/2yr old when he stopped eating solid foods due to gluten) in which they did all the tests and came back NEGATIVE. He was in the <1 th % weight and diagnosed as failure to thrive dropping off the curve for both weight and height dropping two levels on the growth curves in 4-6 months. He has now been gluten-free for 8 months... -
ARCHIVED Kellogs Corn Flakes
dadoffiveboys replied to a topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
First.. don't ever assume a doctors 'recommended' list is correct. I've helped to correct some doctor's lists on gluten-free. The latest was from the children's feeding clinic program (for my child with celiac (but not diagnosed by a doctor - won't get into why)) and they had on their list McCann's Irish Oats. If you do research, you will find that SOME... -
It still exists but doctors REFUSE mostly to allow you to take it. It turns out, I was NEGATIVE on all panels EXCEPT the IGA Anti-Gliadin test (which was high). It was only because I have a great internal medicine doctor that I was given that test. My TTG was at the highest range of normal possible w/o being positive - so what does that mean? I have all...

ARCHIVED Trader Joe's- Unofficial Poll
dadoffiveboys replied to confusedks's topic in Gluten-Free Foods, Products, Shopping & Medications
I'm going to guess it depends on the particular 'trader joes' and also how they make each product. I know I had a gluten-free flourless chocolate cake.. and myself and two of my sons reacted to it (cross-contaminated). Two of my other sons did not react nor my father. We are also sensitive to gluten but the ones that reacted .. we are VERY sensitive.... -
ARCHIVED Rolled Oats ? Gluten Free?
dadoffiveboys replied to ConnieA84's topic in Coping with Celiac Disease
I am extremely sensitive to gluten and I eat the oats only from the Wy manufacturer. I tried the McCann's irish oats (which were on the gluten-free list provided by my doctor) and they gave me problems. I also had problems from the Rice Milk I had tried which was also cross contaminated in processing by Barley somehow. The problem - both of these products... -
ARCHIVED How Many Have Self Diagnosed Celiacs?
dadoffiveboys replied to a topic in Post Diagnosis, Recovery & Treatment of Celiac Disease
Only one of my children was diagnosed with a Gluten Allergy by the doctor then I diagnosed myself and my other children because the whole family went gluten-free.. and I diagnosed my father.... now everyone is feeling better. I also diagnosed TWO of my neighbors.. and one had NO SYMPTOMS except rash and distended belly and turned out to be CLINICALLY positive... -
ARCHIVED Low Pos. Igg Test For Gluten And Symptoms Of Celiac
dadoffiveboys replied to a topic in Celiac Disease Pre-Diagnosis, Testing & Symptoms
All you need is a doctor to support the diagnosis. You said you had some sorta positive on a blood test? I have a great doctor and she put a possible celiac diagnosis on me because just ONE of my blood tests was equivocal. Come to find out I am extremely sensitive to it but don't show up on the 'tests' because I do NOT REACT in my intestinal tract! (Yeah... -
ARCHIVED Atopic Eczema And Celiac Disease
dadoffiveboys replied to Krystens mummy's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I was told for years I had idiopathic urticaria and eczema (i.e. skin bumps from an unknown source... but definitely NOT DH). My baby had it so bad he was bleeding around his neck I found the source - gluten. I do not have celiac disease but I AM ALLERGIC (IgA allergy - blood tests can't test this) to Gluten and only SOME of my children get bumps as well... -
ARCHIVED Gluten Allergy
dadoffiveboys replied to dadoffiveboys's topic in Parents, Friends and Loved Ones of Celiacs
I wanted to provide an update because I think someone may benefit from this. I mentioned my father was having high blood pressure and kidney failure. My father has had more recent bloodwork and besides feeling MUCH better on the Gluten Free diet he is also having a REVERSAL of his kidney failure. His Kidney function improved (in about 6 months on the diet... -
I got a question.. have you seen the new regular reese's cups that are CRISPY?(ie might have gluten in them ) Does this mean our regular peanut butter cups will no longer be safe.. because they ARE the same size as the regular cups ? Just thought since you are talking about reactions I'd put it up. The second I saw ads for those new cups I STOPPED buying...
